Mark Eitzel is one of America’s greatest and most underappreciated songwriters ever. He’s simply flawless.

I was reading about the song "Black" by Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder credits this song for inspiring the lyrics. So I had to listen. Very cool song

Which is interesting as a chain of influence, because Eitzel wrote this in response to Nick Drake's "Northern Sky."

I had the good fortune to see them at their first UK gig at the Breedon Bar in Birmingham, when me and my sis were almost the only people there! Also was at the Songs of Love gig at the Borderline, probably my favourite ever gig. One of the most beautiful songs ever written imho from one of the best albums.

Dennis Harvey I'm in the UK, it'll be much more expensive. I'm sure I'll find it cheap in a record shop some day, that's what happened with Engine. Maybe even one day it'll be available to download legally.

Always reminded me (a little bit) of the SF version of Nick Cave...a little. I saw AMC play the Point in Atlanta. We were 4 of about 40 people there. It degenerated into the audience and band all getting hammered and they played requests until 3 AM. Yeah. It really was that good.

I'd look into Lana Del Rey's album Ultraviolence. I know, I know. Mainstream!!! Pop music!!! Gasp!!! She's actually the shit though. Her other albums are not nearly as great imo, but Ultraviolence is one of my favorite albums to come out in the 2010s.

Time for me to go away
I'll get a new name, I'll get a new face
Time for me to go away
No I don't belong in this place
But I'm not gonna ask you why
You think the parade has passed you by
Or if everything good is gone into the western sky
I hate to see you look that way
All the beauty has left your face
That's such an easy thing to give away
    That's impossible to replace
So I'll take you in my two weekends
And I'll throw you so high
Watch you fall forever in the western sky
And when you land you'll turn into some kind of prize
    Into somebody's sweet prize
I won't see you no more
Who am I to rate that high
The world's a shadow of what went before
The world gives off none of its own light
    So please be happy baby
    And please don't cry
Even though the parade has passed us by
Well you can still see it shining in the western sky
So why won't you stop crying
You can still see it shining

Fun fact: Eddie Vedder mentions that he paraphrased the line “Please be happy baby,” in Pearl Jam’s hit song, Black, as “I hope some day you’ll have a beautiful life…” That is the reason I know of this song.

+stevenj100 And Eitzel was heavily influenced by Nick Drake (see "Northern Sky") when writing this. If you want a bunch more reading check out www.amazon.com/Wish-World-Away-Eitzel-American/dp/0946719209

    • @TerrBerrUK
      @TerrBerrUK 4 года назад +2

@Saitama It's not the sound of the song or the chords that was the inspiration for Black, it's the lyrical theme.

    • @user-ir7uk5wk6k
      @user-ir7uk5wk6k 4 года назад +2

there's only one lyric reflection in Black back to AMC, it's the last bit about 'I hope someday you have a beautiful life...' but that's it. I don't know where you get anything else that's remotely like Black, as njc2o said, check out Nick Drake.
