same here. can’t believe i haven’t known this band after all these years. his voice is so haunting and beautiful. those lyrics? wow. consider me a new fan. better late than never.
I had the good fortune to see them at their first UK gig at the Breedon Bar in Birmingham, when me and my sis were almost the only people there! Also was at the Songs of Love gig at the Borderline, probably my favourite ever gig. One of the most beautiful songs ever written imho from one of the best albums.
Dennis Harvey I'm in the UK, it'll be much more expensive. I'm sure I'll find it cheap in a record shop some day, that's what happened with Engine. Maybe even one day it'll be available to download legally.
Always reminded me (a little bit) of the SF version of Nick Cave...a little. I saw AMC play the Point in Atlanta. We were 4 of about 40 people there. It degenerated into the audience and band all getting hammered and they played requests until 3 AM. Yeah. It really was that good.
I'd look into Lana Del Rey's album Ultraviolence. I know, I know. Mainstream!!! Pop music!!! Gasp!!! She's actually the shit though. Her other albums are not nearly as great imo, but Ultraviolence is one of my favorite albums to come out in the 2010s.
Saw mark play a solo show at the great American and he was out talking to everyone and he was so nice to me and very genuine and I will never forget that encounter, thank you for the music and memories ❤
Time for me to go away I'll get a new name, I'll get a new face Time for me to go away No I don't belong in this place But I'm not gonna ask you why You think the parade has passed you by Or if everything good is gone into the western sky I hate to see you look that way All the beauty has left your face That's such an easy thing to give away That's impossible to replace So I'll take you in my two weekends And I'll throw you so high Watch you fall forever in the western sky And when you land you'll turn into some kind of prize Into somebody's sweet prize I won't see you no more Who am I to rate that high The world's a shadow of what went before The world gives off none of its own light So please be happy baby And please don't cry Even though the parade has passed us by Well you can still see it shining in the western sky So why won't you stop crying You can still see it shining
Fun fact: Eddie Vedder mentions that he paraphrased the line “Please be happy baby,” in Pearl Jam’s hit song, Black, as “I hope some day you’ll have a beautiful life…” That is the reason I know of this song.
You and your sis are the reason I got into American Music Club and they remain one of my favourite live acts of all time. I've been trying to trace your sister for years. Please please please ask her to look me up on Facebook - I can't find her on there ...
For the longest time, I thought Mark said 'take you in my two weekends,' which led me to think it was more a song about a father and a daughter...for me, even more poignant.
never heard this of this group or song. Look it up because Eddie Vedder said it was the inspiration for Black. pretty obvious once you listen. Shit Black is almost a rip off.
+stevenj100 And Eitzel was heavily influenced by Nick Drake (see "Northern Sky") when writing this. If you want a bunch more reading check out www.amazon.com/Wish-World-Away-Eitzel-American/dp/0946719209
there's only one lyric reflection in Black back to AMC, it's the last bit about 'I hope someday you have a beautiful life...' but that's it. I don't know where you get anything else that's remotely like Black, as njc2o said, check out Nick Drake.
Mark Eitzel is one of America’s greatest and most underappreciated songwriters ever. He’s simply flawless.
This song saved my life.
What a lovely, rending comment, thanks for making it. Yup, AMC is that powerful to me too.
one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life
I was reading about the song "Black" by Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder credits this song for inspiring the lyrics. So I had to listen. Very cool song
That’s the same reason I’m here. Ja
Which is interesting as a chain of influence, because Eitzel wrote this in response to Nick Drake's "Northern Sky."
Same.
same here. can’t believe i haven’t known this band after all these years. his voice is so haunting and beautiful. those lyrics? wow.
consider me a new fan. better late than never.
Same
one of the most beautiful songs of the 80s
truly, the american poet
just perfect. nothing else could ever be said. truly one if not my favorite of marks works.

Lols. Me too!
Feel a million miles away when I listen to this.
"I'll get a new name, I'll get a new face...time for me to go away, no, I don't belong in this place". Story of my fucking life.
Same, buddy, same.
Perfect song.
One of the greatest albums ever. This isn't even among the most outstanding songs.
Dennis Harvey been looking for a copy for too long now, at least one that isn't absurdly priced.
I see it's on Amazon at $11.99 right now, that's not bad.
Dennis Harvey I'm in the UK, it'll be much more expensive. I'm sure I'll find it cheap in a record shop some day, that's what happened with Engine. Maybe even one day it'll be available to download legally.
Ah. I live in San Francisco, where old AMC albums are cheap and easy to come by. Good luck.
Yeah Last Harbour is the masterpiece on California
This band and Red House Painters put sad into place.
exactly :3
And nothing comes close now.

The RHP are good, but these guys are a class above them
I love this group! heard them in 1990. still following Mark and why not!
Saw mark play a solo show at the great American and he was out talking to everyone and he was so nice to me and very genuine and I will never forget that encounter, thank you for the music and memories ❤
Time for me to go away
I'll get a new name, I'll get a new face
Time for me to go away
No I don't belong in this place
But I'm not gonna ask you why
You think the parade has passed you by
Or if everything good is gone into the western sky
I hate to see you look that way
All the beauty has left your face
That's such an easy thing to give away
That's impossible to replace
So I'll take you in my two weekends
And I'll throw you so high
Watch you fall forever in the western sky
And when you land you'll turn into some kind of prize
Into somebody's sweet prize
I won't see you no more
Who am I to rate that high
The world's a shadow of what went before
The world gives off none of its own light
So please be happy baby
And please don't cry
Even though the parade has passed us by
Well you can still see it shining in the western sky
So why won't you stop crying
You can still see it shining
Great song! Thanks uploader! And Piero Scaruffi!
Had tears welling in my eyes.

Phenomenal !
The song that changed the life of Harry from 'The Steve Show' fame. I think it's a winner too.
I had heard of this band before I read the Black reference but never listened to them before.
Love these and the Red House Painters.
If any of you guys get time - Lucid Rivers will probably be up your street
California is their best album & the only one I want to buy on iTunes, but can not.
I heard this some inspired Black. I don't hear it.
Love it!
California : possibly the greatest break up album ever.
It’s like Nashville Afghan Whigs
amazing.
For the longest time, I thought Mark said 'take you in my two weekends,' which led me to think it was more a song about a father and a daughter...for me, even more poignant.
Wow. Pearl Jam's black is clearly inspired by this song. (As stated by Vedder).
you guys got Songs Of Love? That album inspired my entire acoustic career
so lucky Chris...did you make any recordings
Can anyone suggest some bands or albums that sound like this?
Yeah! Give a listen to Tindersticks, Trash Can Sinatras, and Mark Lanegan's solo stuff!
Sun Kil Moon
Red House Painters
nobody sounds like this
better song a day 04.16.2012
Did he ever do better than this one. Yeah, but sort of.

@Saitama It's not the sound of the song or the chords that was the inspiration for Black, it's the lyrical theme.
