They called ray Parker Jr. They told ray to listen to the album and see what he could do w it. Prince and ray met up, he drove prince around in his rolls royce, they hung out, but prince was anxious to get in the studio. He gave prince a soundboard and sonething else. Finally he listened to the album. Ray told warner bros, " i cant do nothing w his album, its great in how it is. Let him be him"
Prince helped move RnB into a new era. Before Prince most R&B bands were 7-9 pieces or more with 3 & 4 piece horn sections. Prince was stripped down to just the rhythm section with more of a rock sound. Only the Isley Brothers & Funkadelic were doing that before.

There were 2 or 3 official singles and 2 or 3 others that got significant airplay or play at house parties. His debut For You the previous year, 1978 was solid. It featured the hit Soft & Wet. But this album made him a star.

Lenny White )formerly of Return to Forever was the opening act. This was during Rick James’ tour supporting “Fire It Up” the album before the legendary “Street Songs”. My point is the concert promoters saw enough in Prince to promote him as a headliner. As for charts, the only chart I ever paid attention to was the one in Jet Magazine.
