"When the truth is spoken, and it doesn't make any difference, something in your heart goes cold" - no other musician speaks to the human condition the way that Bruce does, just beautiful!

Long ago, in Toronto, I was to drive a friend and my sister downtown to line up for tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert. I was not a fan so had no intention of being in, what was, a long line for tickets in freezing temperatures. That changed when my sister was too sick so I promised to get in line for her. My friend had lots of time to wear me down to buy tickets for myself. The cold hours in line to get those tickets was an experience of endurance I would rather not repeat, but of all the concert's, including a Rolling Stone's concert, it is that Bruce Springsteen's concert I remember most. His rawness touched so deep inside it will last my lifetime.
Everyday it just gets harder to live this dream I'm believing in... To my little brother that's up there in the sky, will always love you and will never forget you Fran... Thanks Bruce for helping me heal.

Bruce: Let's write Thunder Road, the most uplifting, inspirational song ever. Also Bruce: Let's write a sequel to it that'll absolutely wreck you. I love this song.
It's the difference between the great american dream and the reality. He wrote Thunder Road back in 1974, having all the aspirations of a young musician. In '76-'77, he left all of those on Thunder Road. He was on the impossibility to live the dream. He worked hard, he won, but he was unable to have the prize. That's the core of the song - you can achieve, but you can't have.

Most awesome... I miss some of the days in good old Asbury Park when I used to live there.. walked around that boardwalk and carousel all the time.. playing at T-Birds Cafe... playing gigs in Belmar... Altantic Highlands... Deal... memories of by gone time indeed...
Since the first time i heard this song on a bootleg until his official release, it is one of my all time favorite tracks. I think Bob Dylan or Bob Marley said》 Some people can feel the the rain;while other people just get wet...True... To me this song is all about faith, getting your things together, and try to keep your hands clean from all those false moves that we can all do in this world... And then one day you find out that people you trusted with your heart spirit and soul zonked you off with a flip of a switch, like this is nothing, like this is normal. The codex of brotherhood and friendship and truth is gone from one moment to another...Thats a bitter pill, because if the essential truth lost his entire meaning, then where do we go from here....? DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF THE TOWN....Yes it feels like this, and then the sky starts to cry, look at the tears falling down the street....thats the moment, when you staring into the night and something in your soul grows cold... Cause the promise is broken and you try to carry on... God bless You Bruce✍🎙🎸🙏
the song that turned me into a Bruce fan, showed me what he can do. I preferred a version just him and piano, that i heard first off. but this is still nice
There is no song that does not caress and warms hearts. I already know why they call you BIG BOSS, so only you can open your heart Bruce. I love you.🥰❤💯
Since the early 80's bootlegs, this has for me been the most powerful song communicating soul-tearing human heartbreak. Almost unbelievable how Bruce can express these stories.
"We were gonna take it all and throw it all away"... so many great lines in this song. "The Promise" is for me the key song bridging his Born to Run period with Darkness. This is actually the best version, so much better and more alive than the reworked version ending up on the Darkness box...
I agree I'd say the other one I heard that was with the full band was the shea stadium version from 77 I think it was.. it used to be on yt idk if it still is but it's perfection personified like this version
So to all you people on here that think this is his greatest song written the opening lines are Johnny works at the factory. How many times has he used that line?
If your gonna quote something you better get it right! Its 'Johnny works in a factory' you dill! Its how this line fits so well with the theme of the song & of the telling of the story as a whole. On its own its meaningless!
Arguably the greatest of his many outtakes. It's hard to believe how long it remained something that only existed on old bootlegs until the Tracks version and then the Darkness Anniversary release. I kind of feel that it's like some sign that this was posted today considering how many in the UK today feel like while all seems lost, there is still just that small glimmer that remains.

It is a beautiful song. The best track that he left off of any of his studio albums. Racing is just slightly better and as they are similar thematically, he chose that to be on Darkness ahead of this outstanding song.
