I absolutely loved this video, I used to listen to games with my own soundtrack all of the time but haven't for a while. I really should. Keep on making video that make you happy, it really shines through when you do.
The original Alien Vs Predator game had this weird feature where if I had a music CD in the disc drive when you launched the game, the CD would play with the game's environmental (echo) effects based one where you were standing! It was insane, crawling through vents as the alien and the music is like it's pumping right there in the vents with you.
People hate System Shock 2's music but I've never understood that. Its PERFECT. Perhaps a bit too aggressive/techno for some at times, but paced with ambiance and silence. It matches the setting perfectly.
Sometimes I hear a song, and I feel something is missing, like I need to do something.... Then I remember, I used to listen to that song while playing a certain video game. So I really liked this video.
I haven't played video games in months. When I play, it tends to be low stress stuff like racing games or those Lego movie games (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc). While I play, I listen to audiobooks. I get a lot of reading done that way.
I love this. I sometimes listen to music when I play a mindless shooter or something, but I’ve never considered that it’s an activity I could pursue and curate. Thanks for making this. This video also made me feel very relaxed. So thanks for that too.
18:20 Ooof, that was me when I finished The Silmarillion. I ALMOST cried when I finished Lord of the Rings but held it together only to find out some weeks later that there was a prequel book that told the whole history of Middle Earth, and it was when I finished reading THAT and realized there weren't any more completed tales of that land that hadn't been polished up by Christopher Tolkien that I wept because there was no further arc for any of the characters, that was all there would ever be of the official canon. Mood frfr. Finishing FF7 was a little bit like that too: I was hooked on that game and did EVERY. SINGLE. QUEST. Doubled all the materia, beat every boss, fought all the Weapons, got my characters so OP'd that I could beat Ruby Weapon on auto-pilot (literally just set up Phoenix on Mimic and then let the game play itself for 10 minutes until Ruby was dead).

Back in the maybe 2004, when I was in my late teens, one of the first things I ever bought off Amazon was the Queen album A Night at the Opera. When it arrived, to my dismay I discovered it wasn't a CD like I expected, but a DVD-Audio disc, something I didn't even know existed before that. I didn't have a DVD-ROM drive in my PC at the time, so the only way I could listen to it was through my TV, and I was also in the middle of playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the first time, so I plugged the DVD player into the audio jack and the Playstation in the video jacks and it became the new soundtrack for that game, just playing on repeat throughout any play session. It fit pretty well! I don't think I heard SotN's native soundtrack until the last time I replayed it in 2018.
Quake is such a great example to use, since the original release actually encoded the songs as audio tracks on the CD. If you put a different audio CD in the drive, it would pull those songs for the BGM instead, automatically replacing the soundtrack
i always play a game with its music first, so it can hit if it hits, so many iconic hits for me, Run from hotline Miami 2, the boss music fighting Gwyn in DS1, the music right after watching the tape in Silent Hill 2, the CHILLS, but Night Wish Angel to love while fighting kaelthas in WoW BC is it for me!
Same. A part of me was like "Yeah, she's not a trained singer, a skilled amateur is where she should be." Holy hell, I didn't know how much much I needed to hear ultimate opera Celes.
I wholeheartedly advocate cacophony mode. In-game music at 50%, after I'm used to it, is a perfect thematic joint to any genre of music. Sound effects 100% obviously. It's musically fascinating to follow the tempo mismatches weave together and apart. This often serendipitously creates new cords out of microtonals within the resonances, and is at worst on par with relaxing to lofi beats in/or a moderately noisy cafe. Game soundtracks are inobtrusive enough to layer, so long as they're sorta mixed downwards.

i started doing this with first person shooters, turning off the soundtrack and playing some trap to get really riled up. then i played pirates of the caribbean’s soundtrack with sea of thieves and at this point im almost on your level. kinda awesome coincidence that you made a whole video about it
A great example of a game that pairs music with game events is Saints Row 4, from Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" for Johnny Gat's loyalty mission to Stan Bush's "The Touch" for when you finally get power armor near the end to rip Zinyak a new one, there are great moments of gameplay paired with music..
Haven't even watched the video yet, BUT: 1) Yes I do listen to my own music most of the time, partially because of tinnitus (or podcasts if it's not an audio dialogue driven game). 2) I immediately had a smile on my face, having read your post about burning out on the tough stuff. 3. I hope you're well.
my 2 favorite games to play music over are Superhot, and Descenders. Superhot can trake almost any music and turn it around, free jazz, metal, ambient, all gives it a totally different mood. Descenders is amazing for really energetic music, flying downhill on a bike at fullspeed to anything high tempo jsut feels nuts, more midtempo stuff can be nice for jsut relaxing and trying out some tricks. Oh and Tony Hawk and Skate are great for putting on rock/punk/ska/metal/hip hop
I'm only 3 minutes in, and it already feels like you are having way more fun making this video than the anything you've made in months. Welcome back to enjoying your art
In the original xbox days I used to drive round liberty city blasting out the white stripes thanks to the function that let you play cds you'd ripped to your hard drive.
I'm mostly a purist when it comes to this subject; I prefer to go with the intended soundtrack that the game devs wrote for their projects, but if I'm grinding in warframe for example, I will probbaly switch to my own stuff because sometimes you need a break. Interested to see where this vid goes!
As a teenager I was delighted to discover that Quake 1’s “CD soundtrack” feature didn’t care what CD was in the drive. Each stage of the game is now indelibly connected to a specific track in “The Miracle” by Queen.
Great video, Mr. Cut! I appreciate the shift in tone for the last couple of videos, it's nice to see you exploring less depressing subjects. I don't actually substitute music for videogames most of the time, but I have played shmups while listening to podcasts.
Game music and the music I listened to while playing games has such a strong link to memories in my head. Some tracks are just forever tied to whatever I was doing the first time I heard the music swell.
Funny you made this because to this day I will still get hit with nostalgic waves of when I first played Dark Souls on Xbox 360 and would run various albums of music, across wide swatchs of genres, for hours during my plays. Good times. Also during the first Saints Row and Halo Reach. Those were very lovely evenings
Yes! Adding my own soundtrack to repeat play throughs of a game is one of my favorite things to do. It forever links those songs to the energy of the gameplay, and vice-versa. One of my favorite audio/video concoctions that I’ve stumbled across was playing Elden Ring to the tune of the Yellow Magic Orchestra discography. Caelid with Tong Poo was an absolutely luminous combination.🤩
Sabina Zweiackers performance of the Final Fantasy aria with the Swedish Symphony Orchestra still gives me goosebumps to this day. Easily the best version of one of the best game soundtracks in history.
This video brought back a distinct memory. I went over to my friend's house and he had Assassin's Creed Origins. When he let me try it out I climbed up to the top of a pyramid and slid down it while playing the Slider theme from SM64.
It's a fun topic, and I've done a bit of this myself, though admittedly not with as much thought as you've put into it. Especially when replaying a game, it's a way to keep things fresh. And while artistic intent is one consideration, when you buy a thing it's yours to enjoy however you want.

Thank you for this. Longtime fan and I felt the passion and love turned up for this. I f**king cried, bravo friend and to many more 🍸👍🏾
Love your suggestion to replace 16bit RPG soundtracks with the orchestral versions!!
I used to have playlists of music, but lately I've been playing while listening to podcasts.
That is just wrong
I'm really enjoying the new content
Lemme say, this is not the video I expected it to be, but, once I transcended the contravening of my expectations, it was a delightful ride that still managed to enlighten and inform. Well done, Leon. I am absolutely down for these trips, as well.
Depending on the game I might just listen to something like this while playing. Explore a world and listen to video essays, it’s kinda great!
I absolutely loved this style. It was fun, funny, and it felt like you enjoyed making it,
Playing Sonic to Don't Stop Me Now is amazing 😂
Thematically AND atmospherically appropriate, yes.
As a video game connoisseur I really appreciated your musings on it. Would be cool if there were more to come in the future.
Podcasts too! Welcome to Nightvale for GTA, Old Gods of Appalachia for Far Cry 5, and Magnus Archives for Spiderman/Miles Morales
And the Epic: The Musical soundtrack makes Assassin's Creed Odyssey HIT
Honestly, I feel like Epic would make anything hit!
i started doing this with first person shooters, turning off the soundtrack and playing some trap to get really riled up. then i played pirates of the caribbean’s soundtrack with sea of thieves and at this point im almost on your level. kinda awesome coincidence that you made a whole video about it
Of course! My Smash Bros sounds settings : SFX: 70%, VFX: 50%, BGM: 0%
Haven't even watched the video yet, BUT:
1) Yes I do listen to my own music most of the time, partially because of tinnitus (or podcasts if it's not an audio dialogue driven game).
2) I immediately had a smile on my face, having read your post about burning out on the tough stuff.
3. I hope you're well.
thank you for making this, i love it
Heck yeah, i love video game music, cant wait to hear your thoughts on this!!
my 2 favorite games to play music over are Superhot, and Descenders.
That was nice. ;D
Love this new direction for the channel! Thanks for sharing with us
I'm only 3 minutes in, and it already feels like you are having way more fun making this video than the anything you've made in months. Welcome back to enjoying your art
I was hoping you'd talk about disco elysium this video, it's soundtrack is so perfect. Awesome video man
I just turn on my own spotify whenever I'm playing a non horror game
What an incredibly rewarding follow this channel has been over the last few years. Also your delivery somehow even drier on this one, impressive!
This video left me delighted and peaceful in a way I didn't expect but needed. Lovely stuff
This was fantastic. I don’t think I could ever change up the soundtracks on a game, but I love the examples.
I cried at the beauty of you making this video. And at the beauty of the video itself!
And while artistic intent is one consideration, when you buy a thing it's yours to enjoy however you want.
wonderfully vibey video, I was binging your Lynch analysis videos and I just know you must roll great joints
