Growing up in a family with three generations of lawyers, Deepa's early years were marked by an environment of humility and respect for individuals, irrespective of their societal titles or positions. Despite her mischievous adventures, like sneaking onto the terrace roof to play with monkeys, Deepa's upbringing was grounded in a joint family with doting grandparents and parents who served as terrific role models.
Choosing to pursue architecture over computer science, Deepa drew inspiration from her architect uncle in Delhi and later discovered a passion for urban planning during her studies at Adhiyamaan Engineering College in Hosur. Influenced by noted architect Meenakshi Jain, Deepa not only appreciated the scope of design but also the context in which these projects were implemented.
Her journey took a significant turn when she moved to the United States after getting married to her husband Vedavyas. Facing the challenges of immigration, Deepa reinvented her career, going back to school for Urban Planning at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her dynamism and extensive internships earned her the Outstanding Edward Temple Scholarship Award.
Deepa's career led her to serve disadvantaged communities in the Buckeye neighborhood in southeast Cleveland, where she felt deeply connected to the community. Her commitment and outstanding contributions garnered recognition, and she even worked on sustainability efforts for the City of Cleveland under Mayor Jackson's Administration and currently, supporting the realization Mayor Bibb's vision through her work in the sustainability space. Deepa's involvement in United Nations sustainability efforts, work with the Cleveland Foundation, and collaboration with influential figures highlight her impactful career in urban planning.
Currently serving as the Resilience and Sustainability Director at NOPEC, Deepa continues her dedication to community development. Beyond her professional life, she finds joy in spending time with her two daughters, exploring dance and music. Deepa's commitment to self-care, yoga, and taking meaningful pauses between jobs exemplifies her belief that women should prioritize their mental and physical well-being.
