Wow. Thank you for posting this, I used this method and it fixed the problem in less than 30 seconds. Not sure what caused the issue, but I suspect that well bellow freezing temperatures and constant winds that further deep the feeling of cold didn't help. Either way, thank you so so much for posting this and saving me the hassle of having to open the driver door from the passenger side. Also side note, quite surprising that so many people have this kind of problem.
It's a year make model design flaw. I assume grease goes bad and makes outside latch bar stick. I was going to make return springs, but wd 40 in latch with this procedure is easier
Thank you for your post, after trying various other ideas this worked really well saving having to strip the door down. This car is not in regular use so I guess the problem is that the lock mechanism has become sticky and just requires reactivating. It was easy to tell when when the lock re-engaged, I could feel it straight away with the extra tension on the door handle.
This worked! Thank you. Glad I found this video as other videos were advising dismantling the door. I openened the inside handle maybe 40 times before I finally heard a click, then the outside handle started working again.
I did the same thing with my video search. I also bought springs Incase I had to rig something for a latch return. I actually took the handle out to look at the mechanism and got it to return when it first happened, then it quit again So after realizing the inside handle worked I just went at it one day after I sprayed down the latch days prior with lubricant and got no result. To then this patty cake like method of a procedure to actually get a result and not have the issue anymore. I was also going to swap latches with my Jetta but they are pull cable where this has a bar into the handle. Thank you for the reply and hope you have a good summer this year :)
Thank you so much for this video 😊 ihad stripped the door down plastic panel off about to remove the metal panel when I found you have to take the glass out 😮 so was about to take it to my local garage 😢 I've got to put everything back now lol drivers door is still a bit stiff as it's still very cold in the UK, because I'd disconnected the door controls I had to hold finger on unlock button on remote which makes all of the windows go down "thankfully", I will keep at it ....thanks again 🙂
So when you flip the outside handle, door should be locked. When flipping the inside handle door should be unlocked? Do you have to alternate or do a bunch of flips on the outside handle, then do a bunch on the inside handle?
You can examine a working door, the door requires 2 handle pulls to unlock and then open I believe. Wd 40 works well once you get it open, but this procedure is to work the outer latch free from being seized and not returning. That part that gets stuck is behind the outside door handle. So pulling the inner handle to open and the cycling the lock then opening with the outter handle should release that paddle to feel a little more and more tension on the outer door handle That tension can be compared to the other door handles. If the door won't open from 2 complete handle pulls to spray the wd40 into the latch mechanism in the door it might be more complicated because it's supposed to open inside.
I recommend spraying the latches with lubricant. I used pb blaster or whatever works best. I believe its something to do with old mechanism grease causing outer door mechanism to not return.
@@chrisjennings493 I think spraying the latches with wd 40 helps. I believe it's the mechanism grease that sticks. But you can tell when the outer door handle has slack on the pull of it, if it has worked free or if you have to repeat for a while. I sprayed my latches really well inside with the straw for the can and they kept working.
Hope this isn’t your Passat it looks a bit neglected, is it sitting in some pound or breakers yard, very sad to see it so messy and scratched, still working on my handles no luck so far but I will try again, any alternative if this doesn’t work?
It actually was really beat up and chopped up when I got it. Cars are just cars and they are always replaceable. Only other thing I could say would be to spray the hinges / latches with lubricant. I sprayed mine with PB blaster. It kinda takes a combo to get it to work right.
Idk how, but it worked after 5-8 minutes of spamming the door on outside while locked and from inside when unlocked. I was having this issue for few months and was almost ready to take the car to a car service, I'm almost sure they would've charged me a retarded amount for this and lie about how complicated it was for them to fix it lol
My door doesn’t open from the outside or inside..I’m having to go through the passenger side to get into the driver seat. It’s such a pain in the *** ESPECIALLY during the cold weather. Going to try and see if this helps.
My problem is only the driver side door. From another video I learned the actuator probably needs replacing. Seems to be a $100 part just a pain to take the inside trim off. Doing things like this is great in a jam but will only get worse.
I recommend spraying the latches with lubricant. I used pb blaster or whatever works best. I believe its something to do with old mechanism grease causing outer door mechanism to not return.
@@StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf I have the same problem. Lubricating the door with gun oil only helps for the inside handle, at least for me. I never get the outside handle to work when it is -5c temps. I’m guessing the oil does not reach what ever is jamming the outside wire or something. I’m still willing to give this trick of yours a try.
@@GRORGvideot WD 40 is better for cold temps @ moisture. The straw has to spray inside the latch mechanism, I also try to spray in crevice holes of latch mechanism then operate, open close .etc door.
So the only thing I could think of is trying to get the door panel off. But the child lock situation will make it difficult if you fix it and then have to turn the child lock back on. If you have to use the child lock on the rear doors my best advice would to be to not use the child lock, disconnect the cable to the door handle and keep the hook to pull outside of the door panel so you can reach it with pliers to pull say just outside the panel. I had to think about your comment for a while, but what happens is the latch has a bar that pulls back towards the outside door panel with the handle. Since you can not reach that part easily, a flat piece of metal like a slim Jim with the tip in a U shape to prevent from hooking on anything would possibly work to get the outside handle mechanism bar to return. What I would do is try to ride the flat piece of metal against the outside door panel with the handle pulled on the outside to feel if the bar is against the latch mechanism connection. If you could get that piece of flat metal like a slim Jim to get the piece that connects to the outer door handle to return all the way the mechanism should release when it returns after you cycle the lock and unlock button for the rest of the doors. You have to be careful not to snag or break any wires, but the flaw in the design is that outside handle paddle that connects to the outside door handle does not return, leaving it in the stuck out position as if that handle was being pulled all the time. Then once you work that mechanism with both the inside and outside handles it works the grease inside it and frees up the operation where that outside paddle returns itself. I first tried to fix mine by taking off the handle but it worked then stopped again, so I tried spraying the hinges and that didn't help much, and then I found it was that paddle that was not returning. The way the handle comes out is to remove the plastic side piece with the screw on the side of the door and then it comes out to the side with the whole little VW procedure. That little side cap is another point of entry to hope to get at that little paddle with say a long pick or something that would reach it and then you would replace the plastic cap once the door opened. *Doing all of these at your own risk* Because you can damage wires or parts with all of the above. The objective is to get the paddle for the outside door handle to return and then cycle the lock and unlock. As I said, you could hold exterior handle outward and then use it to feel if you are touching that paddle and try to feel the handle pull backwards all the way then hit lock unlock with. Your remote or through another window / lock switch to see if it will open. You can also feel if that door is stuck on the paddle side by feeling the tension between the good door that still unlocks if you pull the handle with the door locked and it still opens if you pull the handle locked and then unlock it. The tension between the stuck door and working door will feel a return on the good door where the stuck door has a less tension feel. That tension is what you are going to be feeling for when you lock unlock and pull. Your best way of doing the whole pushing the paddle back is to know that tension feeling and if you get a hold of the paddle, keep your tool in the same position without moving it, hit the lock unlock, hopefully with a remote and then slowly pull the handle / pull in a limited distance to see if it's still loose or has tension and retry again with your tool in the same position to work / wiggle .etc the paddle back to where it will reset the latch. You still have to lock unlock because it's like someone holding onto the door handle while you are trying to unlock the car. But it should work hopefully.
So you roll down the window and have to lock, pull the handle outside, then pull the handle inside. Then do it repeatedly to get it to work the mechanism free. You can probably do it with the car running and the lock switch so it does not set off the alarm. It will have a pull tension on the door handle once it's freed itself and you can pull that tension with the door locked.

@@nr56 So the passenger airbag thing can be diagnosed and cleared with obd eleven. The door issue just spray the door latch with a lubricant and keep working with it. It might take spraying the hing with lubricant and keep trying it day by day after use. I can't understand the check lights well if you don't have obd eleven or a vag system reader. Because there is specific codes obd eleven or the other will tell you. The airbag issue is common and it's usually something in the passenger seat that the part is hard to find from what I found as a common issue.
That makes it a difficult situation because you then have to get the door panel off with the door closed and see if you can get the arms that are pulled by cables at the latch itself to return and hopefully open the door. Then depending on your situation you probably want to replace the latch itself if the inside part does not work. If this is a rear door the child lock might be on causing this situation. It's also difficult because if the latch that holds the door closed completely failed, you have to break it apart till you get to the core where you can pry the locking mechanism open to get it to release the hinge. If you don't know what to do when getting to the core of the locking mechanism then you will not be able to open it.
