    Hi Karolyn. Love your tutorials. I’m going to make some fondant just to practice some of these techniques. I’ve only made it one other time but I did not need to cover the entire cake. My daughter asked me to make a Jack Skellington cake, for my granddaughter‘s birthday. Needless to say I’m nervous but up to the challenge. I’m doing the simplest possible design by decorating a round cake with buttercream and using fondant to make vertical stripes down the side as well as eyes, mouth etc. An experienced friend suggested using a pasta machine to make stripes. Because I t’s new to me and I don’t want to leave making stripes day of event, Can I make them 2 days before? If so should I try to dry them or keep them moist? Thanks Karolyn.

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  Год назад

      The only thing with making them so far in advance is that they could dry out and crack. I prefer to make the stripes and immediately put them on the cake. The fondant isn't dry yet when I'm handling it so I don't get any cracks. If you do want to make them in advance, I personally would put them in a ziplock bag so they don't dry out. Good luck with it, you got this!

    I recently started spraying Confectioners Glaze on my Paint Decorations, after they have dried to the touch about 5 mins I transfer to where ever it's going. And the "painted" part doesn't get all over my fingers lol. I didn't know if you have thought of that or what, just thought I'd share.

    Hey Karolyn you are just great! I have a question when making the fondant what's the longest you've kept it wapped and in the fridge, basically what do you thing the expiration is? I have never eaten fondant do people take off the decorations then eat it? Or do they eat it too? Also with the crisco does it change the taste of the cake?

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  2 года назад +1

      I keep the fondant wrapped in plastic wrap, then I put it in a ziplock bag, and then I store it in an airtight container at room temperature. I don't store it in the fridge. I go through so much of it (I probably make 10-15 batches a month!) so it doesn't sit too long. But I've had it last about 3 weeks. I'm sure you can freeze it, but I never have so I'm not sure what to recommend for that.
      I personally hate eating fondant. It's like kale on your dinner plate. It looks pretty, but you just leave it there. So when I eat cake, I just eat the cake and icing and leave the fondant on the plate. I feel like most people do that as well. It's chewy in texture, which is weird to eat with cake! LOL
      And the crisco, there's a light coating and a lot of it gets absorbed by the fondant. So I haven't noticed any taste difference.
