“Goodness gracious” 😊 Radiohead stimulates and stirs me more than any other band. My all-time album favorite is “In Rainbows”. Banger after banger after banger 🌈
Not stage fright per se but the relentlessness of touring and being in a new city, hotel room every day. His advice was to pretend it wasn't you and it was happening to someone else.
I heard Thom say in an interview that when he was in college he wasn't sure he wanted to pursue music but he saw The Pixies and REM in short succession and decided he wanted to devote himself to music. So Thom taking Michael's advice was a no brainer. Especially on the their first two records you can absolutely hear those two influences.
@stewscottcurran i think it was much stronger than that. He was on the verge of a total breakdown and MS gave him the tool he needed to survive the end of that tour with his mind intact
@@brandonlbartlett Michael had as bad a performance anxiety as anyone ever in the beginning, but he adapted and overcame so his counsel carries a lot of weight was my point.
This song reduces me to tears, even with it's gorgeous ethereal music. It for sure makes you feel like you are walking a little off center, like the ground is shifting under your feet. Radiohead is an expert at making you off center.
Absolutely. I've thought for a very long time that his vocals are largely interchangeable with violin. His timbre, mid-high range... even subtle drag from note to note sounds more string than vocal cord. This song explicitly highlights where his vocals peak and sit with string ensemble.
@ikesours6558 I always go back and forth when deciding my favorite Thom Yorke vocal performance, but it's between this and Rabbit in Your Headlights with Unkle. The final note he hits on that never fails to give me chills.
Shout out to Jeff Buckley and the influence he had over Thom. Thom was enchanted, just like Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, Elizabeth Fraser, and countless others by the majesty of Jeff.
No other band makes me feel emotion like Radiohead. Some people say it’s depressing or sad music, but I feel nothing but calmness and happiness flow through me when listening to them. Awesome to see someone become so entrenched in it right before my eyes. Enjoy the journey!
I'm so sick of people saying there music is depressing when it's not at all that way, ask a person with actual depression and they will tell you that it's not true.
Awesome reaction, you totally got it. I love that part where the strings get crazy dissonant at 5:35 then Thom's falsetto breaks through, and it resolves, it's a beautiful moment. Goodness Gracious indeed.
The moment towards the end when he effortlessly switches to falsetto is for me the greatest thing in any song. The fact he can still do it live now is nothing short of a miracle.
I’ve never heard this. Dunno how I missed it. It’s gorgeous for all the reasons you mention. It’s like living in someone else’s mental state for a time. How amazing is that? So genuine!
Such a staggeringly incredible musical composition. That dissonant note creates so much beautiful tension. When it drops out it’s like the song exhales. Not many rock bands attempting stuff like this anymore.
Kid A is one of my favorite albums, guess I'm gonna have to stop procrastinating and finally pull the ripcord on Patreon! 😆Great analysis as always, Alex. I love that you deemed the song so good its sort of unratable. I've known its backstory for ages, but for me, it has a personal resonance that takes me to the place inside of me that dealt with traumatic and painful situations but was able to find the strength to come out the other side, in part thru detachment (which isn't totally different from Thom's experience, of course). It leaves this oddly cold yet comforting lasting impression. Hard to explain - but the song definitely does it for me instead. Also just wanna say: You are doing a FANTASTIC job in your solo flight! Love Andy for sure, but I'm happy he's taking this time for himself, and meanwhile, we're all doing great in your capable hands ❤
Most amazing song - so beautiful! Thom's absolutely gorgeous vocal, Colin's killer walking bass part, but the real genius is Jonny Greenwood's string scoring and Ondes Martinot parts. Genius in action.
Great review. When people talk about "post rock", I feel this song is a good example. Its more of a haunting soundscape that has a masterful mix of calm and chaos. Kid A was a big adjustment for fans, who had been blown away by OK Computer, but as you point out, in hindsight was the most logical direction.
Radiohead wrote this song after playing a gig in Dublin, appaently in relation to a dream Thom Yorke had later that night. The Venue Readiohead played in Dublin was The Point Depot now called the 3 Arena. The Venue is located in Dublin Port at the end of the River Liffey, just as it flows into the Irish Sea; hence the line "I float down the Liffey". I'm pretty sure that thing you mentioned above that really big gig with the Technical issues was their headline set at Glastonbury, UK in 2017. They're were probably roughly around the same period (months) but I'm fairly certain that they're 2 different events; as the gig in Dublin would have been an approx 10K show and Glastonbury was probably 10 times bigger.
You're somewhat correct. The gig was in Dublin but at the RDS (I was there) and was close to 40k there. Radiohead found out that OK Computer reached number one right before the gig (hence Thom walking around Dublin and "floating down the Liffey (River)") while the "Fireworks, Blown Speakers" reference etc. is from their massive Glastonbury show shortly afterwards where they had massive technical issues and led to the "I'm not here, this isn't happening" line but was received as an iconic Glastonbury headline show. A mesmeric, beautifully emotive song that hit differently every time saw them in Dublin after that given the context.
For me, this evokes a dreamy, otherworldly atmosphere similar to the symphonic backing in "Nights in White Satin." To me, the vocals mirror the emotional weight of Justin Hayward's impassioned delivery in "Nights in White Satin."
I just watched today’s reaction How to Disappear Completely. It has become one of my favorites from this album. Loved your reaction and how you mentioned this helping with anxiety. You described it perfectly. From personal knowledge anxiety can be an ugly thing and to be able to find something to help you with it besides medication is awesome. That’s why I say music is now like medicine for me. I’m now so looking forward to listening OK Computer. Thanks for all the great music🎉❤😊🙌🏼 I hope you have an awesome rest of your day!
One of the obvious reasons why this is such a superb album…. even (in many people’s eyes) eclipsing “OK Computer” as their greatest work. It certainly was one of the bravest choices (and biggest left turns) in rock music to go from a huge critical and commercial success and then reinvent yourself on your next release. One of the greatest one-two punches in rock history. (I’d add “Moon Shaped Pool” to the trilogy as Greatest Radiohead Albums… and easily slips into my favorite 30 albums of all-time.
I love “Comfortably Numb” but that’s a song about the concept of feeling comfortably numb. This song is that feeling itself. I get absolutely lost in it.
Radiohead have figured out the trick of build. They understand that the human body responds intensely to songs building slowly and then exploding. They are hypnotizing us.
The Beatles inspired me as a child and I longed for the next album to come out, and each one was a marvel. Led Zeppelin was the next band to do that. I would rush to the record store at the next release. And then Radiohead comes along, 20 years later, and that same feeling of anticipation was just as strong as with the Beatles and Zep. How fortunate we are.
I guess I wasn’t a “child” during the Beatles time (was a teen) but for me, it’s The Beatles and Radiohead! My two favorite bands, being in my 40s when I first heard Radiohead. Lucky to see both groups live.
I'm not a huge Radiohead fan, but I love this whole album. Maybe it's because it came out when I was going through my divorce and it just spoke to me, I dunno, but it's still an amazing listen all the way through. In my opinion, it works better as a full album listen, as opposed to single songs. The feel of this album is so perfectly melancholy and thought provoking. Just brilliant.
I hope Andy is ok mate 😊👍🏻 merry Christmas and a happy new year to you both!! Wierd fishes is my favourite Radiohead song, i hope you will both get to it one day.

OK Computer stands as one of my all-time desert island selections, and this song always felt to me like something that came out of the OK Computer sessions, but was held over for Kid A for one reason or another. Anyway, both albums are just incredible. I feel like OK Computer is Radiohead's "Sgt. Pepper" or something... they were just firing on all cylinders as a band and creatively.
Thom Yorke is fantastic. Another singer you might like is Jim James from My Morning Jacket. They started as a really good jam band (some fans like that era best), but sort of transformed into something beautiful and delicate that still rocks. On their albums It Still Moves and Z, they pull off some amazing transcendent jams, and James is able to bring a similar delicacy to his singing. They don't sound like Radiohead, but they remind me of Radiohead.
I'll probably get a handful of haters for saying this, but it's a shame they've not worked with Brian Eno. The combination of their aural soundscapes would be astonishing. BTW, yes, it's the River Liffey - it runs through the centre of Dublin in Ireland.
Since you like this one so much, I'd highly recommend 'Let Down' from the OK Computer record, which I think is one of their greatest songs. It would make a great pairing.

It's own category!! The only album I can compare it to is early, early Genesis..."In the Beginning"; but it's also like REM automatic for the people. Radiohead was a cd burned for me; but it's deep in my collection. Interesting!! Scary!!

(I first heard this song live on the OKC Tour, Toronto 1998, slightly diff lyrics, teary-eyed as a mofo. #magicmoments)*
Hope not a hidden message?
No lol I just hit the full album on Patreon and thought I’d clip a song from it since I’ve seen people asking us to hit Radiohead on here
@@andyandalex Iv'e been asking for a couple of years in my opinion the only band that stands with bands like The Beatles or Pink Floyd and Zepplin in the last 30 years. I feel like they're my generations Beatles and have been highly influential and made a huge impact on music.
It's own category!! The only album I can compare it to is early, early Genesis..."In the Beginning"; but it's also like REM automatic for the people. Radiohead was a cd burned for me; but it's deep in my collection. Interesting!! Scary!!
whiney whiney whine...i try

I'm not saying do no cocaine but consider doing less.
lol
May I suggest you listen to Bad Influence by the B-52s? I think you'd like the bassline and beat
I love Radiohead but I can’t listen to them often- it literally depresses me too much. I listen to them when I want to wallow in sadness lol, which I’m happy to say I don’t do anymore. There was a point in my life when every song I heard by them was too real, I was living those emotions.
Honestly very fair. It’s definitely music that can really bring out emotions
Were I a DJ, I would couple this with Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb"
