  • The Kaman K-1200 K-MAX is an American built intermeshing rotors helicopter. It is a very rare helicopter with only somewhat over 50 manufactured so far. It was exclusively designed for transporting loads of up to 2'700 kg (6,000 lb). The beautiful and impressive K-MAX HB-ZTW of Rotex Helicopter is seen starting-up and taking-off at Heliport Bern in Switzerland on a cold winter day.

    For some reason, the Flettner rotor system is aerodynamically stable in hover, unlike all other helicopters; and it takes input from the pilot to do anything else. The contra-rotating and intermeshing rotors balance the rotational forces, so no power is wasted on a tail rotor. The K-Max uses servo-tabs for control of the blade pitch, so no hydraulic system is required.

    • @matthiashaenni
      @matthiashaenni  Год назад +11

      Wow, it's fascinating to learn about the Flettner rotor system and how it differs from traditional helicopter designs! It's great to see that this system is more aerodynamically stable in hover and doesn't require the energy-consuming tail rotor. And the fact that the K-Max uses servo-tabs for control of blade pitch is a clever solution that eliminates the need for a hydraulic system. Innovation in technology never fails to impress me!

      @@matthiashaenni yes Kaman is well known for their servo-tab controls of the rotors and it apparently makes their helicopters very pleasant to fly and excellent at autorotation in an emergency

      Its because daul rotors tend to cancelled out the drift from the other which is why single rotors have a secondary rotor in the back to cancel it out

    • @Neckername1
      @Neckername1 Месяц назад

      So basically if you lose power, as long as you can keep the rotors moving, you'll have a higher chance of surviving by not getting caught in a downward spiral due to lack of power to the rear rotor.

    T53 sounds so sweet during spool up. He lifted up, sat back down, started slowing the engine, and I immediately thought of Sam and Grandpa in “The Lost Boys” when Grandpa started the car, then turned it off, Sam asks “I thought we were going into town?” Grandpa said “That’s as close to town as I like to get.” 😂

I'm pretty positive that's how the gearbox is set up. If I'm wrong, then I accept that and will endeavor to better understand the inner workings of the aircraft.

    The K Max is so intriguing. It’s so ugly it’s weirdly beautiful, made so by its tremendous utility. It can lift well more than it’s own weight. The sound of the rotors at speed is a general fluffing and whooshing like a thousand big birds, and no tail rotor buzz of course. So different from sound of the two-bladed Bells and multi-bladed Sikorskys and Hughes we’re all so used to and can pick out for miles. I have heard there are issues with training however. The K Max is only single seat and the only two-seat intermeshing rotor helo is the Kaman Huskie, of which the couple of remaining airworthy examples are beyond their useful lifespan.

      I don't know much about this, but isn't it problematic if rotor blades exceed the sound barrier? I thought this was one of the design tradeoffs involved in helicopter engineering. I'd also expect it to be extremely loud...

    Does it use cyclical pitch? Or do you still need it with counter rotating rotors?

    Head Clearance?
    with most copters, ground personnel are only supposed to approach straight on from the side to avoid the blades.... I'm guessing the rules are different for this one where they angle down on each side?
    EDit: Yep, I just saw the 'approach from front' warning written on the side of it

    • @matthiashaenni

      Thank you for your observation! Indeed, the K-MAX helicopter has a unique feature with its intermeshing rotors that allows for a different approach procedure compared to traditional helicopters. The design of the K-MAX rotor system reduces the need for a tail rotor, which in turn allows for a safer approach from the front. The warning to approach from the front is a crucial safety measure specific to this helicopter model. Your attention to detail is much appreciated! 🚁

    Also schön finde ich ihn ja nicht, den K-MAX, aber das Teil ist der Hammer und zumindest in unseren Breiten fliegen auch nicht allzu viele davon! 👍👍👍

      Besten Dank. Der K-Max ist zwar ein seltener Hubschrauber, aber er ist ein Arbeitspferd für Transporteinsätze in den Schweizer Alpen. Er wurde ausschliesslich für den Transport von Lasten bis zu 2'700 kg konzipiert.

    Could you please explain how does this machine rotate around the vertical axis? Classic helicopters perform that by changing the balance of the tail rotor compensation. Twin rotor machines (Kamov Ka-26) do the same action by changing the RPMs of both rotors. But how it is achieved here? Twin rotors here are perfectly synchronized so disbalance of their RPMs is impossible…

    • @falcondesert1836
      @falcondesert1836 Год назад +1

      I expect by changing the angle of inclination of the blade because it gives a decrease or rise in force equal to the increase and decrease in rpm

      No real helicopters change rotor speed to change lift; instead, rotor speed is constant and they change the pitch angle of the blades to change lift. To yaw (rotate around the vertical axis) an intermeshing twin-rotor can add collective pitch to one rotor and reduce the other (yawing due to differential torque reaction), or pitch one rotor forward and the other rearward (producing a yawing moment due to the offset between the rotor masts). The K-Max uses a combination of those two methods.

    You know, I understand the how. What gets me is the why. Real passenger and cargo capacity is out of the question. To me it's one of those just because you can doesn't mean you should situations. Fun to watch, but I'd hate to count on it every day to function perfectly. I know all aircraft are dependent on flawless engineering. This design is like just asking for disaster.

    • @matthiashaenni
      @matthiashaenni  Год назад +1

      I understand your concerns about the practicality and safety of certain aircraft designs. While it's true that some designs may seem unconventional and raise questions about their reliability, it's important to remember that each aircraft is designed with a specific purpose in mind. Some designs may prioritize speed or maneuverability over passenger and cargo capacity, while others may be intended for specialized tasks such as military or rescue operations.
      Furthermore, aircraft engineering has come a long way in terms of ensuring safety and reliability. Each aircraft must go through a rigorous testing and certification process before it is allowed to fly commercially, and ongoing maintenance and inspections are required to ensure continued safety.
      While it's always important to prioritize safety, it's also important to appreciate the innovation and creativity that goes into aircraft design. Some designs may push the boundaries and challenge conventional thinking, leading to new discoveries and advancements in aviation technology.

    Is that system less efficient than a Chinook? On this thing, the trust is split into vectors pulling on the airframe in opposing directions.

    I wonder if the K Max is somewhat easier to fly than a normal helicopter since the pilot doesn't have to manipulate the tail rotor. Also, I wonder why he lifted off slightly and then landed again before he left. I'm just here to learn.
