I'm not a fan of Periphery's music (It's too "busy" for me), but I could listen to Nolly & Misha talk all day long. The amount of knowledge those two pass on to us, the humble RUclips audience is incredible. Both of them are like University Professors in terms of knowledge, but come across as being totally chilled out, humble and most importantly, PASSIONATE! and are both fantastic at getting their point across. Another fantastic video. Thank you!
I don´t like and use the "smash" mode so much (sounds distorded and undefined to me) but the "grab" mode sounds in your face! Clear and punchy! Best compressor to me so far.
That's just a basic track stack in Logic. You can do one by selecting multiple tracks, right click and create a track stack. Or use a shortcut shift+cmd+D
Amir Poorhafezi I could be wrong in this instance but Nolly doesn't typically do compression on the drum bus itself. Instead, he'll add an SSL G-comp (Slate FG-Grey) to the master bus, set with a fast attack, gain staged to react primarily to the snare
Amazing plugin and I will definitely be getting it soon. Couple of observations: 1. "10 minute drum mix" is misleading as you pre-gated and EQ'd these drums prior to the video. 2. I think this would sound a bit better with some thick reverb on the shells. It needs some mud and warmth added back in after all of that hyping, and the reverb would also help glue the kit back together
"1. "10 minute drum mix" is misleading as you pre-gated and EQ'd these drums prior to the video" Are you 100% sure about that ? That's exactly what i was hesitating about, since this static drum mix sound so amazing right away, before any processing (compression ).
djabthrash you can see other plugins loaded on different channels as well throughout the video. It would have made sense to call the video "10 minute drum compression" instead

The important thing they do is explain "why" to do something. Not just "what" to do. The thought process is where the real learning can be had
I want this man's voice to gently tell me bedtime stories every night for the rest of my life!
hmmm yes
“Come into handy” (5:32)
Ok well if you insist
Even the initial raw drum tracks sound way better than a lot of finished mixes lol. Awesome video btw!
to get it right from the start is always the first thing you have to think about
Your raw drums before processing sound better than any of my final mixes :D

All gold as usual - best mixes
Already sounds great in recording
Do you send the dry tracks to your parallel comp bus? or the effected tracks?
Love how you got the saturation knob to come into handy Haha
Holy FUCK those are really good sounding raw drums especially considering they're live.
Great video - thanks man!
The big question is... is the interface resizable? Looks painfully small on your particular setup. Sounds great thought.
he's got a big ass monitor > .

Just smash you're room
What snare gate is that? I've never heard such clean gating
Best sound that i have ever heard
How I use this compressor plugin for bus glue?
Hi Vsauce, Michael here XD
I LITERALLY JUST CAME HERE TO COMMENT THIS. I was too late lol.
I’m intrigued to know how you have grouped the tracks with a section that says Kick, Snare etc. How do you do that?
That's just a basic track stack in Logic. You can do one by selecting multiple tracks, right click and create a track stack. Or use a shortcut shift+cmd+D
What about the drum-sub? the whole kit must have a little compression all together, right? Thanks for sharing.

Really like this video, thanks for that! What is the purpose of this gate on the room channel ?
Hey Nolly, was this Matt just kinda jamming out in a studio session?
What gate are you using? It really does the job!
Fabfilter Pro-G, doing about 12 dB of gating.
Useful!
Matt Halpern making the rest of us drummers look like chumps...
How can you mix while solo button is ON?! Legend, lol
NOLLY!
I call this nolly lite
Is there a reason why floor 3 (tom) is hard-panned left?
Yes because it's set up on his left side probably

OK got it at 1"34... Missed it at first... I would have loved to hear the pre-EQed, pre-gated tone also.
