Thanks for posting the video. I am replacing my therm and pump this Friday and being a (mostly) novice there were details in your process that other videos have not had. Hopefully this will be the end to my overheating. Already replaced a cracked radiator two months ago so that part is fixed. All research leads to my WP being the culprit now. Will keep an eye out for future repair videos if you post them. Please thank the camera operator as they did a great job as well!
Great video. Really only needed to see if you ran into any issues with the thermostat, but you made it look simple. Thanks for posting and including the tool list.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I managed to do this at home and your video was a huge help. I was thrilled that I could do this with a little help from your video.
You make this look so easy, I wish i had the guts to do it myself but with my luck I will mess up something else or have left over bolts!!! Thanks for the video, watching from Reynosa, Mexico September 24, 2020
First off cheers to jeep for being super easy to work on second. Thank you very much you saved me 240....FING mechanics i have the 08 Grand Cherokee 3.7l and it was super easy i have way more space to work.
I see that you show how to remove the water pump AFTER the fan blade/fan clutch have been removed. Actually, that is step 1, and the hardest of all. I just changed mine last week. The fan was so hard to get off, that I pulled the water pump off with the fan blade attached, which was no small task. Then, I took the fan blade/water pump assembly to a machine shop to get them separated, so I could re-use the fan blade/fan clutch. Apparently, the fan blade assembly is often so tight, due to the rotation of the fan, that it cannot be removed, even with the proper 36 mm wrench and spanner wrench. Also, after everything was back together, I didn't get all of the air out of the cooling system and had to have my Jeep put on an air-lift machine to get it "burped". Wow. Not sure I'll be doing much more work on my own with this Jeep. LOL! Not for the faint of heart, for sure. But, it's running great now, after all that effort, and I paid $51 for the new water pump. Thanks for walking through the rest of the process.
Lance, i have a 2003 jeep Liberty limited. It has 2 fans. one attached to the pump. I need to know if the fan attached to the pump can be changed if it malfunctions without changing the water pump.
Not antifreeze but ANTI SEIZE. If you don't know what that is then ask your local auto store clerk. Yes it will help with thread lock. Sorry about the delayed response but I've been busy the past two days with an American holiday tradition. Thanks for your views and comment!
awesome! it went off without issues it looks like. was wicked cold so the radiator hose was stiff and tough to take off but that is minor compared to water pump issues i have had with my cherokee
To anyone doing this DIY job when removing bolts from old water pump place the bolts in your new water pump so you will know where each bolt needs to go ( like a template)
He's doing a good job, but for the lower hose you don't need to pull it off on either end, there's a little nut on the bottom of the radiator that let's you drain coolant
+The Grease Grizzly The lower hose only needs to be removed when wanting to change the thermostat. I would always recommend changing the thermostat. It's a inexpensive part.. thanks for watching
This a nice tutorial, even with the music. I actually enjoyed it. Obviously I can see what you did. I'm going to do this on my Jeep soon. Hopefully this weekend! I do have one question though. How do I know if my Jeep has a fan clutch?
Thank you so much for watching... A fan clutch is really easy to see. If your jeep has one, it'll be connected to the water pump pulley. As opposed to the water pump and fan being separate entities.
Fan clutch? do you have a diesel engine? If you do or not I can post both for you but it'll be two different discussions and it'll take a lot of time. Do you have a 3.7 L engine or 2.8 L?
If you do have the 2.8L Diesel I can post the instructions for you but I can't post a video about it. Since I don't have that particular engine.... Appreciate your views.
Thx I figure how do it i remove the fan clutch and your video for the water pump really help me thx Lance ur video is amazing...in the future i wanna change the chaing of the motor i not know if you have a video about that ....2002 jeep liberty 3.7L Thx Lance
got the new pump in went almost too smooth but the pump wasn't the problem any other ideas I'm at a loss at this point unless their is some bypass valve that I'm not finding
+Stare Crazy You can try feeling the the top and bottom hose once the jeep is warmed up. Check to see if both hoses are hot. If one is hot and the other is cold then the thermostat could've gotten stuck closed. If its a new thermostat then the thermostat could've been placed backwards.
It circulates(pumps) coolant throughout the cooling system. The coolant has to be circulated through the radiator and the heater core to provide a safe engine temperature. So if your pump stops working the coolant would quickly overheat and cause major damage to the engine.
+Anthony Vlogs no for what's it worth toward the value of your engine, it's highly recommended to take the safe route. Replace your water pump, seals and coolant... weep holes are specifically designed to warn you of catastrophe water pump failure. It might seem like a lot but if you do it yourself you'll save hundreds... if you have any further questions, you can always try private chat
hey I have been having troubles with no heat changed the thermostat flushed the heater core drilled a hole one the box that the heater core is located to check the blend door doesn't overheat and stays at half way on the heat gage I'm all our of ideas and the only thing I can think is water pump at this point unlikely that it is any ideas
+Stare Crazy Yes, it sounds like a water pump issue. Even though there's no audible bearing displacement the fins on the inside of the water pump could not be spinning or worn. You could try squeezing the bottom and top hoses to see if theres suction. If theres none then the water pump could be the problem.
+Stare Crazy I noticed my old pump had a green plug in the top but the water pump I got and you have both didn't have the green plug but had the hole do I need a plug because it was so brittle it just fell apart when I tried to take it out
it turned out to be the heater core I finally bit the bullet and changed it it took 5 hours but we'll worth it I'm surprised I was able to get water flow thru it last year it weighed about 2 lbs more then the new one guessing it was full of debris
ProfessionalDad Indeed, if you have a 3.7 Liberty with the tow kit and the mechanical fan, this job become a nightmare where you have to remove the whole front.
+Guy Rousseau +ProfessionalDad I just had the extreme difficulty of that very struggle. I pulled the whole assembly off, then took to a machine shop to have put on a vise to get it separated. It would not have come off under the hood, even with 36mm wrench and spanner wrench!
+Kevin Ruff There are exceptions to every rule. LOL! This particular Jeep model is NOT reverse threaded. I verified that with the new water pump before I started cranking down on that thing. It was so tight, a spanner wrench would never have gotten it off. I had to remove the whole assembly, water pump, fan clutch, etc., then put in a vise and beat it with a hammer. It was awful.
You forgot a very important step..... You need to Bleed the system of air after adding the coolant and motor is up to temp, Then you top off the tank if needed and done.
+143Chippy I had mine put on an air-lift machine to get the job done. I couldn't seem to bleed enough air from the system myself. This whole thing was no small job.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm doing one for the very first time this weekend and that's the one area I feel a little unsure of, everyone seems to do it differently. I'm glad this wasn't the first & only tutorial I watched!
A couple of things, if someone purchases a Thermostat that is not OEM pay attention to the direction of installation, I have seen some that do not have the small location tab and you can easily invert during install. Make sure you check the Tensioner and Idler for bearing noise, if I pull a water pump I replace the tensioner. Replace the belt, even if it’s got only 20k, they are cheep, also if you have a rubber/plastic preservative you can soak the belt for 10 min or so and the belt will last for years. The last thing is check waterless coolant, it is superior to what we normally install. I forgot to tell you to drill a 1/8 hole in the flange of the Thermostat to allow easier air bleeding. Make sure not to drill in matting surfaces.
Well, things were going great until I snapped a bolt in the block putting the thermostat housing back on. Even then it didn't leak even at full temp. At the mechanics to get the bolt removed and replaced. Oh well.
Sorry to hear about the thermostat. These parts are mass produced in mexico and i've worked on hundreds of engines. Bolts just break sometimes, mainly its the quality of the bolts. I need to make a video about tapping a broken bolt. its so easy. Trust me it does happen often when you work on engines. Im glad you got it fixed.
Thanks for watching. I hope the therm stat change goes well for you. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I usually respond to questions within 30 minutes.
Sorry about the delayed response... I was driving when I received your question. Okay, There are only four mounting screws holding the fan assembly into place. They are located under the hood facing the engine on the fan assembly. Be sure to disconnect the negative side of the battery first! Remove up and lower radiator hoses along with the electrical connector. Loosen then remove the four mounting bolts with a ratchet (preferred). Next, simply lift up to remove the fan assembly. The fan assembly is sold as one whole unit so if any parts are defective than be prepared to obtain a brand new fan assembly...... Installation is reverse of removal. If you like I can make a video for you but you won't be able to see it for at least 48 hours. ..
I had two fans one on the radiator and one on the pully on the water pump I was having a difficult time taking off the one on the pully but if figured it out thanks for responding to my question.
Catch2218 Of course your welcome. If I had known you had a dual fan system I would've gave those instructions as well. sorry next time i'll post both. I just couldn't because I can only type so much during my class lecture. I'm glad you figured it out though. appreciate your views ;)
I didn't need info on music video do you people KNOW how make a one MINUS the music. are you people getting PAID to promote music video. people come looking for info. like get real this is not concert DAMMIT
Your right my future videos won't have sound favoring music. I cut the music to half the video. Thank you for your comment I'll cut the end with the music info. :)

I loved the Music! Very easy and concise instructions. Thx
THX for sharing your installation procedure, you mention using antifreeze on the threads bolts. Will that take place of thread lock?
Not antifreeze but ANTI SEIZE. If you don't know what that is then ask your local auto store clerk. Yes it will help with thread lock. Sorry about the delayed response but I've been busy the past two days with an American holiday tradition. Thanks for your views and comment!
video is wicked helpful gotta change my mom's water pump tomorrow, keep the guides coming if you still have that vehicle or even do them?
Thanks! Yes, I still own the vehicle and probably will until the transmission can't go anymore and yes I do all jobs by myself...
awesome! it went off without issues it looks like. was wicked cold so the radiator hose was stiff and tough to take off but that is minor compared to water pump issues i have had with my cherokee
thats good. glad to hear the good news..
with your help the change out went perfectly...thanks

could you help me how replace the radiator fan motor for to star with t all this project with my 2002 jeep liberty ..thx... ur video is really good..
Yes I can. Do you have the same radiator fan as mine? Or dual?
2002 jeep liberty actually is the fan clutch could u do some video thx

Mr Lance I also own 04 Jeep Liberty .
question what does water pump do or work for ?
It circulates(pumps) coolant throughout the cooling system. The coolant has to be circulated through the radiator and the heater core to provide a safe engine temperature. So if your pump stops working the coolant would quickly overheat and cause major damage to the engine.
+Lance thank you..
What year was this jeep.
2006
4 yrs for a reply lol.
I replied four years ago. I’m just loving your comment. 😎🤙👍
Is it unusual to have to replace a T-Stat housing during water pump replacement?
Rocky Barrett not really. It really varies. It's good you found out now rather than later.
Does a water pump need to be replaced though? For example my jeep leaks from there, couldn't I just put a new gasket?
+Anthony Vlogs no for what's it worth toward the value of your engine, it's highly recommended to take the safe route. Replace your water pump, seals and coolant... weep holes are specifically designed to warn you of catastrophe water pump failure. Lance Yeah you're right, I already purchased the whole pump and gonna replace it later today.
+Anthony Vlogs please let me know how it goes..
Lance turns out, my jeep is different lol, the waterpump is connected with the fan. I got a 03 Jeep Liberty Renegade.
Excellent video! Thanks!!!
hey I have been having troubles with no heat changed the thermostat flushed the heater core drilled a hole one the box that the heater core is located to check the blend door doesn't overheat and stays at half way on the heat gage I'm all our of ideas and the only thing I can think is water pump at this point unlikely that it is any ideas

+Stare Crazy I noticed my old pump had a green plug in the top but the water pump I got and you have both didn't have the green plug but had the hole do I need a plug because it was so brittle it just fell apart when I tried to take it out
Stare Crazy No the Weep holes serves different purposes. Leaving it unplugged would be okay and they can't to do their job if they're plugged as well.
it turned out to be the heater core I finally bit the bullet and changed it it took 5 hours but we'll worth it I'm surprised I was able to get water flow thru it last year it weighed about 2 lbs more then the new one guessing it was full of debris
Lance, will a water pump leak coolant?
Scott Scott yes normally from the weep hole but sometimes from around the gasket.
thanks for doing these videos
Thank you for watching!
A new radiator/coolant recovery cap might do well also good luck!
Great video. I might be doing this real soon.
how did the fan clutch magically get off?
No fan clutch on this engine. The cooling fan houses the radiator.
My bad. Looks exactly the same as the 3.7 Liberty with 2 fans
ProfessionalDad Indeed, if you have a 3.7 Liberty with the tow kit and the mechanical fan, this job become a nightmare where you have to remove the whole front.

thankyou. informative clip helped me out big time. funny start with the belt struggle though..

Ive bled many vehicles by just leaving the reservoir cap or radiator cap off and just letting it burp out the air

i thought the bolts on the thermostat were 8mm ?
Francos Farms mine were a 7mm but if an 8mm fits by all means use a 8mm

Lance can i replacd the water pump without draining the engine. i did do a radiator flush but only my water pump seal is messed up now
