For 11 years (97-08) Tiger was a master of getting everything out of most of his rounds and turning bad rounds into good enough rounds to move onto the weekend or next round of match play, then he'd bury them the next day. He obviously had a few good years after that too but I'm not sure if we'll ever witness another decade of dominance like that in golf again, at least for a long time. Plus he did this through multiple injuries, personal problems, and who knows what else. Amazing
He was also unstoppable in 2009 but the PGA at Hazeltine that year really ruined his psyche as a golfer in the years to come. That tournament probably caused more damage than his scandal that plagued him tbh
JB's college coach when recruiting him asked JB, "how far can you hit a five iron?", JB's answer was "as far as I want". JB is super slow, but he's fun to watch hit a golf ball.
Honestly Tiger is the goat. I do have to say I love how J.B. Holmes has stayed with the same swing with basically no changes his whole career. It’s such an athletic movement. He doesn’t hit every check point in the swing but he hits the impact checkpoint EVERY time.
Honestly Tiger is the goat. I do have to say I love how J.B. Holmes has stayed with the same swing with basically no changes his whole career. It’s such an athletic movement. He doesn’t hit every check point in the swing but he hits the impact checkpoint EVERY time.
JB is one of the most underrated players of his generation. Would have loved to see what JB and David Duval could have achieved if they had stayed healthy, mentally and physically.
I don't think stats are the only thing to count for what makes someone the GOAT. Tiger changed the entire culture of golf. He's a giant, a household name, even if you don't watch or play golf. He's far from messed up his life. He's got a much better life than most, and I wish him well soon.
If you truly appreciate the game, how can you not marvel at this guy? I'm constantly amazed, but never surprised. The 6 straight Junior's, 82 PGA's and 15 Majors alone are staggering, but more than anything is the way he routinely does the spectacular.
This is the man to watch hands down he is simply extraordinary. I make it a practice to only watch the best in the game. It drives a person to be like them, even if you never come close. Just an awesome US open 23 years later still a thriller.
@@canyounot5598 Agreed. All he needed to do was 2-putt to win the hole and at the pace it was going he thought it was going to miss but obviously be up there for a tap in. The fact that it went in just makes the whole thing look so ballsy lol.

Here we are ohh so many years since that day and I am amused at the commentators of that day and still today attempting to analyze the thoughts of Tiger Woods while not one of them EVER were at the level of skill as he. How in GODs name could they know where Tiger's mind was nor is,, he's on an entirely different level than any player in the game's history. Tiger Woods has rewritten the game at every level. He's off the charts amazing.

Elijah Schreiber this is actually the last time they played it there. This course (The Gallery GC) hosted twice, 07 and 08, before they moved it to another course in the same town, Marana, AZ. However the players hated the new course (GC at Dove Mountain) especially the greens, and after it snowed during the 5th year it was played there, many of the good players gave up on the course and stopped coming. So in 2015 the PGA then moved it back to California.
Kelly Tiglman made me quit watching Thursday-Friday coverage for that period of like 3 years when she was very often calling it. Bill Macatee, Terry Gannon, Roger Twibell, and Rich Lerner were all much more listenable Thursday-Friday announcers in that era. Her “lynch him in a back alley” comment was edgy and triggering enough to be interesting, so I don’t dislike her personally, and I think she was good on golf central and live from, but she was not good at play by play.
I think its more likely that he knew it was either in or a tap in that would be conceded byHolmes so he started walking regardless if it went in or not.
Seeing these match plays again makes me realize why he doesnt feel he needs to prove anything anymore. After the 6Peat US AM/JRs and these.....he is the ultimate match player.
O. G. Tiger woods is probably the best singles match play golfer that has ever lived. Not that he isn’t the best at stroke play too, but plenty of stroke play legends don’t have a match play record like Tiger’s. Didn’t lose at all as an amateur, very rarely lost as a pro. It’s a little surprising he didn’t win the match play before 2003, but he was upset in 99, lost in the final in 2000, skipped in 01 when it was in Australia, the famous upset by Nick O’Hern in 02 and then finally won it in 03 and 04. Especially surprising considering his previous victory at La Costa in 1997 when it was hosting the Mercedes Championships, where in a virtual match play situation Tiger destroyed Tom Lehman.
Nostalgia from that old Golf Channel theme, though I practically stopped watching early-round coverage during 2007-09 while Kelly Tighlman was the announcer… this performance I was actually on a plane during, so this is the first time I’m seeing it in full (thanks PGA Tour!!) but what a legendary comeback performance by Tiger here and once this happened it was almost a given that he was going to win the championship. Ended up dusting Stu Cink 8&7 in the 36-hole final…
JB's 1st tee shot once he addressed the ball he didn't even look down the fairway. Is that the new strategy? But it didn't work out very well, big pull.
Just noticed that jb had his putter pivoting from his stomach also his caddy line up a put from behind him. I thought this was against the rules or was it not in 2008?
