Genesis owusu, actually went to the same highschool as me. Used to see him all the time, he always had a presence and he knew he was gonna do something awesome someday. Honestly feels awesome knowing that someone who seems so normal can do something so great. Inspiring at the least. Proud of you kofi
This is amazing, thanks for sharing.
That’s sick
What high school did you guys go to?
@@prianpyakurel2938 we went to one in Canberra Australia bro
Canberra gang
Not gonna lie Melon, it was a huge shock to me when you revealed that you stole Owusu's teeth from him as a young child and installed them in your own mouth because you were jealous, but honestly it makes sense.
I'm so happy, this is top comment
this is canon
dont get it? their teeth dont look alike ?
Danish Pigeon They’re implying that Owusu had to get gold teeth because Anthony stole his real ones
Word of mouth isn’t dead.
Thanks for the recommendation Melon.
why would it be dead? its stronger than ever with social media.
@@jake748 to me at least, social media has only served to cheapen suggestions. It always feels like there's some sort of angle
@@nelson1tom thats def true
@@jake748 I guess algorithms are the main way people discover new music today, and they kinda suck most of the time
@@nelson1tom you realise youtube is social media, right? most content on social media is made by real people so u prob just don't like most people's taste im music lol
This album is a 9/10 for me. Best day view record of the year so far
@Trent Nozen personally A Song about Fishing is one of my faves on the album but I agree the songs after that are a little unnecessary
Sorry to say it so late but- debut*. Tbh just upset no one said it sooner…
@@My_Anarchist_Superhero oh, thanks! I forgot about this comment; i think it was posted in a time when I didn’t have my English certificate 🥲
@@ManGalvMoral well congrats on getting it!🙏👍
I’m so glad that you gave it a positive review, this guy has so much potential and I really love this album
he reminds me a lot of Bakar, really excited to see what he does this year as well I love both their sounds
@@tobertitus thanks for the comment, just looked bakar up and I love him already
Hey Anthony, thanks for supporting Australia's rap and RnB scene the way you do, Australia has a crazy amount of talent but sometimes can feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world and can start and end with triple J bar a few acts, but your reviews really help our artists gain international attention and it's endlessly appreciated, Stella Donnelly, King Gizz and Tkay are a elfew who I imagine would be super thankful
This seems sincere so just dropping this here. He's already reviewed all those artists you mentioned, most recently King Gizz last week, and even interviewed Tkay at one point...
No, I was listing them as artists he's positively reviewed that I'm sure gained a lot from it
i love aussie music sm, hockey dad one of my fav bands ever
@Asher Simpson so true
@Asher Simpson the Aussie Grunge/Punk scene is crazy good but doesn’t seem to be exporting well. Wonder if Covid hasn’t helped as I know Chats we’re doing a uk tour in 2020
He's like the lost member of Gorillaz.
Song Machine Pt2? Albarn make it happen
@@josephwright4222 oh my god yes please
i thought he was British at first lol
"A Song About Fishing" is a great song, easily one of the most calming things I've listened to this year
it's the closest (good) thing we'll ever get to an R&B sea shanty
Anthony I’m not transgender, please stop telling me to “transition.”
underrated comment 🤣
It's okay Andrew, you don't have to deny who you are anymore. You're among friends.
@@PoorlyMadeArt is that a reference to the smash hit video game Among Us???
Andrew we’ve all known for a long time. It’s okay. We love and accept you for who you are. We just want YOU to accept yourself.
Anthony Fantano, Forced Feminization, uh, forever!
Still cant believe this dude is sitting on a stool during all this.
It's so creepy that he actually is
That ruined this video for me
Am I the only one that thought he was sitting down all along?? If he was standing I feel like he’d be swaying and shifting his weight more
He also doesn't wear pants.
You just ruined all his videos for me
Come from the same city as Genesis, same age as well, we had some mutual friends in the music scene. Got the privilege of seeing Genesis and his brother Citizen Kay perform in some really cool venues and little bars, it makes me tear up that he's really blowing up this year, it's really incredible
Canberra represent!
Don't live there any more but would always go out to see Genesis perform. Always a wild time.
Genesis and Citizen Kay are bros???
@@adamgcampbell98 yeah man, they used to perform together as the Ansah Brothers. Killer gigs
some of my absolute favourite gig moments are from seeing genesis at transit and at spilt milk his live shows fucking shred
You Australians keep surprising me with how dope your music has been lately
Kofi did a show at my uni sometime in 2019 and I remember standing next to this guy who was loving the show just as much as me. Turns out it was his brother! We chatted for a bit and Kofi actually ended up with us in the crowd after his set so he could enjoy some Sampa. Honestly it was unreal meeting them two. Highlight of the year for sure. So happy to see him grow and get some international attention
Citizen kay ?
@@oscarhoare3461 yeah haha
@@Papas73 good dude, he was actually the first rapper i ever saw perform
Man the production in this album is addictive. Definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future
Genesis Owusu and Oranssi Pazuzu should do a collab
Underrated comment
Colab for the ages!
Honestly, I wouldn't mind that. Could genuinely be something sick
Would be the strangest nu-metal revival project ever
@@godofgibberish85 psychedelic black metal with neo-soul vocals and hip hop rhythms.
"No Looking Back" sounds like the theme song to Full House lol
YES! spot on :D
YA just got it, it's like the softer version and in a much slower way
I'm so glad this album is getting its due! Genesis shows so much promise and this is a really strong debut!
Black Dogs is the punk rager I needed this year, while Waitin On Ya and Smiling With No Teeth is the progression of neo soul I’ve always wanted in my life, along with being my two of my favorite songs of the year so far. Such a talented dude
There's no way you're not gonna mention how much the first song sounds like Death Grips
He literally did
Ik i instantly thought of death grips when i heard it
I like the first song
This is one of my favorite albums ever. This was definitely a 10 for me. Thank you Melon for introducing me to this. This was beautiful.
His Like A Version cover of Anarchy in the UK and his own song I Dont Need You are both fantastic.
Like a version is one of Australia’s finest cultural exports
@@thefreshserveAgreed. His cover of Anarchy in the UK and Denzel Curry’s cover of Bulls on Parade are easily some of my favourite covers in general and definitely two of the best from Like a Version.
Yo is no one else going to talk about how the melody of "No Looking Back" kinda sounds like the Full House theme song?
That was my first thought hearing it. Still love it though
Literally the reason I came to the comments haha
Uuuuugh I never noticed it and now I'll never not notice it.
I'm pretty certain it has to be an intentional reference

For a first introduction to an artist, this album is honestly amazing and I feel I gotta look more into Genesis's work
really appreciate all the reviews you do and all the work you put into this channel and fantano, thank you for always putting me on sm new music :)
If I hear this man say zany guitars one more time im offing myself
Okay sooo I just need to make sure I’m not crazy… or find out that I am 😅
The intro track sounding like a clash of different sounds is the literal PERFECT intro to an album like this- an album that takes from so many different influences and genres - flips them upside down and mixes them up to create this new fresh sound.
The intro track is prepping the listeners for the different genres that will be blended with vocal arrangements that we don’t normally hear on that genre of sound.
The first track is foreshadowing the mixtures of genres and vocal execution the listeners are gonna hear. But the intro is the chaos of it all at once. It’s almost like a pallet cleanser if you will lol.
You can tell this man’s an artist. This is the first album I’ve listened to in a while that’s felt like a cohesive record. And that includes the intro.
I can’t even think of anyone other way he couldn’t started this album off without tying himself to a genre when clearly this album is supposed to teeter the line of an experimental pop project.
Okay that’s all. 💗 anyone .. thoughts? … lol
-> also! Mr. Fantano- What a great literary analysis of this record and the black dog and what it represents! I enjoyed hearing your interpretation on what exactly the black dog symbolizes and where they come into speaking to the audience/narrator.
This guy is blowing me away. AOTY potential
Did not see this coming. Love seeing more talent from Australia get recognition.
Never make that face ever again
thank you for turning me on to this. have listened through 4 times today it's fantastic
I love "on the move", kinda gives DG and Childish Gambino vibes at the same time
thanks for reviewing this anthony, i went and listened to it and now it’s my favourite of the year so far.
I cant believe MC Ride just put on an Australian accent and released a whole album like we wouldn't notice
Every black guy is MC ride
Oh my God nooo, please don't do this, it's like every time Anthony reviews an alternative black artist they get labeled mc ride
@@mannyoftheeast3318 or he sounds like him 🤦♂️
Shut up
I've been listening to him for almost a year now and I'm so, so proud of him for this album. awesome project
This was so impressive, cannot wait to listen to more in the future.
This feels like it could be another Section 80 moment
Using my early arrival time to request Coheed and Cambria reviews! :D
I forgot those guys existed. They’re pretty good. The Mars Volta is better though.
@@MyBeautifulDarkTwistedFantasy6 never heard of them, ill have to look them up.
i was literally listening to you narrating a story while doing hw when I clicked on this video. you keep me from dying of boredom during long periods of studying, keep up the great work
@@Darksomnium they’re amazing
He's covered them in YUNOREVIEWS before, he shows no interest in them and thinks they're merely an annoying Mars Volta ripoff. A little disappointing.
Anthony, you can't just give this a 2 because your teeth are "the best in the game" and his are "non-existent".
Someone mentioned that they came here from theneedledrop and I got so excited that Genesis is getting this attention. Genesis Owusu is amazing, genrebending and ambitious. This album didn’t let me down. Amazing
I would love to see the review of that green album that always shows up at the end of his videos. Really nice cover, never seen anybody talk about it for some reason
listened after seeing the review, loved it. gonna be playing it all week now
Finally reviewing more Australian hip hop artists Tony, proud to see 💪💪💪💪
I didn't expect to see myself coming back to this album as much as I am right now. Goddamn what a good album
The maniacal insanity of some songs like the opener "On the Move!" Is part of what makes this album one of my favorites I have found recently. It also does a great job of personifying the black dogs in his life especially on "Smiling with No Teeth" and "Watin' on Ya"
Being derivative is just going to become more and more common nowadays and sometimes can’t be helped as artists are trying to put their own twist on a certain sound.
Derivative implies a lack of “new value” or progression, which certainly doesn’t describe this album
Probably the best review you've done this year :)
Honestly, this is so far my AotY, it's just got so much ambition and flair to it that I think the back half having a few less amazing songs doesn't work so well. A Song About Fishing grew on me a lot with a few repeated listens about people telling you to keep doing a pointless task "throwing a net into a fishless lake" telling you it will reward you in the future even when it doesn't, while also being a nice little breather in a somewhat longer album.
First person I've seen who enjoys that track and its one of my faves! This album is great and I can only see it growing on me further
@@prettyj245 I love it too
@@prettyj245ive had it on repeat for days even tho i found genesis when SWNT came out and have been listening to him since then lol. i dont even know why, i didnt care for it before but it hit me so hard recently. so good and def one of my favs, now im watching reviews to see how other people liked it lmao

Idk why i didn't get to him fast, i didn't regret any of it. I love this album, it's like what if Black Thought can sing and is a rapper from Australia in 2020
WUTD is my favourite song from this guy. Haven't heard much else granted but that track BANGS
i dont see colour is such a fucking killer track. this whole album is so diverse that it feels like im listening to a compilation but it all also works so well together. really happy i finally checked this out
Another classic review from “Endless 8” Fantano
haruhi suzumiya lol
glad to see the balance (of people once again acting like Anthony has given an abnormal amount of 8's this year) has returned after two reviews of him slagging off generally well-received albums from Julien Baker and Architects, on the first 8 after those two, no less.
Please review the new Kings of Leon album.
Knowing you it will get like a 6. I just want to hear it from you.
Stumbled upon Waitin On Ya by accident, then proceeded to play the whole album just out of curiosity and I was very pleasantly surprised. Will replay this for a few days for sure.
You know the album is good when:
The least fav track is a short interlude or skit
He compares it to greater albums (TPAB)
SO MANY FAV TRACS
That's honestly how I felt as well. There were certainly some rough spots but over all dug this album very much I would give it 4/5 stars
Hell yeah! This might be my favorite album of the year so far!
Tidal put him on new albums and I LOVE IT
Skim listening to this now. It gives me huge OutKast vibes with an electronic touch.
He gave it an 8, bro. Give the man your full undivided attention.

I’m not looking at the score yet. But this album is amazing. Easy AOTY rn. You can’t deter me melon man
Another Black Aussie artist, we love to see it ✊🏾
never been fishing but love a song about fishing
this might be my favorite album ever made
Bro the intro is one of my favorite tracks
The intro track is a moods setter for the genre switching and the psychedelic and experimental approach of the album. It’s not supposed to be a solid piece, but more disjointed to connect well to The Other Black Dog with that repetitive beat (like we land and crash on the album). The song about fishing… isn’t about fishing. There’s def more to it. Same for the black and the other black dog, they are different ways of suffering from depression. One that brings you down down, the other which makes you want to fakely boost yourself to be socially accepted.
Nah, I really think this has many secrets to it, it can be a masterpiece in disguise
Thank you Melon, we love Genesis!
I would love if you reviewed Benny Sings!! He is my favorite. Thanks!
Love me some Genesis Owusu ❤️ this dude is about to explode

Let’s agree: The Smiths recorded The Queen Is Dead as a tribute to the recently deceased Freddie Mercury
Wow Melon, at least he is still smiling to this day even after you ruined his dream of having the "best teeth in the game" by stealing his teeth years ago.
I would love for you to check out Nur-D. A real standout young artist who just toured with Brother Ali right before the pandemic.
Last summer he was tapped to host a live stream from Paisley Park by the estate of Prince to raise money for the musicians in Minneapolis impacted by Covid-19.
