  • Description of Devi’s nose is over. The twentieth mantra in Sri Lalitha Sahasranama is
    tārā kānti tiraskāri nāsābharaṇa bhāsurā
[who shines with a nose ornament that excels the luster of the venus.]
It means she whose nose ring surpasses the radiance of a star. It means she is wearing a luminous nose ring that surpasses the radiance of a star. It is said that Devi’s nose ring is made of diamonds and pearls. Devi is wearing the most radiant nose ring.
    kadamba mañjarī kḷpta karṇapūra manoharā
[who is captivating, wearing bunch of kadamba flowers as ornaments.]
This is the twenty first name in Sri Lalitha Sahasranama. Devi’s ear is like a flower. Devi is wearing kadamba flowers in her soft ears. Devi has beautiful ears which are adorned by bunches of kadamba flowers. Devi’s ears are constantly listening to the glories of Shiva. Saundarya Lahari says that Devi’s ears are like flowers.
    aviśrāntaṃ patyurguṇagaṇakathāmrēḍanajapā
japāpuṣpachChāyā tava janani jihvā jayati sā ।
    Saundarya Lahari 64
O Mother, the well known tongue of yours,
Which without rest chants and repeats,
The many goods of your Consort, Shiva,
Is red like the hibiscus flower.
The learned, devotees, Yoginis are all gathered by Devi all the time. Devi’s most favorite is to constantly listen to the glories and chants and names of Shiva. Devi is wearing flowers in her ears. Devi radiates even more by wearing kadamba flower in her flower like ears.
    tāṭaṅka yugalī bhūta tapanoḍupa maṇḍalā
[who wears the sun and the moon as a pair of large earrings.]
This is the twenty second mantra in Sri Lalitha Sahasranama. There are two earrings dangling from her ears. Sky is Devi’s hair. Sun and moon are the earrings. Sun and moon are the eyes of Devi. Devi is three eyed. Sun Moon and fire are Devi’s three eyes. Sun and Moon are also Devi’s breasts. Sun and Moon are Devi’s earrings. She pervades this entire universe. In Saundarya Lahari, Sri Shankaracharya says:
    sudhāmapyāsvādya pratibhayajarāmṛtyuhariṇīṃ
    vipadyantē viśvē vidhiśatamakhādyā diviṣadaḥ ।
    karālaṃ yatkṣvēlaṃ kabalitavataḥ kālakalanā
na śambhōstanmūlaṃ tava janani tāṭaṅkamahimā ॥
    Saundarya Lahari 28
Parameshwara radiates as an eternal being because of Devi’s earrings. There is a story related to this. Devas are engaged in the churning the Milky Ocean. Nectar came out of it. They had the nectar in the hope that they should be immortal. But they still have to face death someday. They became extinct after a few kalpas. Death for devas who have had amrita or nectar of immortality is inevitable. They had nectar to be rid of old age, sickness and death. But they go through this all. Brahma, Indra and other gods have to face death. During the churning, the great poison Haalahala also came out. Shiva swallowed it so that the world could be saved from its ill effects. From that, he got the name Srikantha. He is called Srikantta, Parameshwara. But Shiva who consumed the poison has no death. He is beyond time. He does the dance Tandava along with Parameshwari in Mahakalpa.
    maheśvara mahākalpa mahātāṇḍava sākṣiṇi
[who is the witness of the great Tandava dance of Maheshvara (Shiva) at the end of the great cycle of creation.]
He has no death. In this time, we tie gold mangalyam while getting married. That is the mark of marriage. But in ancient times, earrings made of palm leaves were worn as a mark of marriage. Devi is wearing them in both her divine ears. They are sun and moon. Parameshwara is beyond time because of the greatness of those earrings. Measure of time are based on sun (day) and moon (night) like seconds, minutes, hours day, week, fortnight, month, quarter, season, year, decade, century. They shine being beyond them. Devi is the embodiment of the timeless (eternal). Sun and moon are Devi’s earrings. Parameshwara attained immortality because of their greatness. This mantra refers that Devi’s devotees can also attain liberation. We are hearing the part Keshadipada varnana of Lalitha Sahasranama or Description of Devi from head to toe. It talks about each part of Devi and the principles it represents.
    To be continued…
