    Madame Curie had two daughters: Irene and Eve. Eve had the incredibly rare distinction of being the only person in her family not to receive a Nobel Prize. Her mother received two (chemistry and physics), her father got one (in physics), her sister got one (in chemistry), her brother-in-law got one (in chemistry) and her husband got one (for peace).

    It's wild to think a lot of her stuff is still as radioactive as it is, not to mention that when she passed (RIP) her coffin was lined with lead! What an inspirational woman and scientist. This video was a really interesting insight into her work and ideas, thanks

    Toby, I watched this yesterday and came back to watch it again today. I just wanted to say thank you so much for doing content like this. Curie has always been a huge role model of mine and to see you explain her PhD (also that of Einstein and others) is like a present that you give the world every time you post. I would love to have the time and expertise to look through high impact theses and important scientists' academic history, but it is just not something that I can do. Please please please continue with this :D

    I thoroughly enjoyed this! I have read Marie Curie’s biography and wish I had accomplished at least half as much as she did. There‘s a recent film about her starring Rosamund Pike, as well as an older one.

    My partner is a physical chemist by training, and a materials scientist by vocation. Thank you for this tour of Marie Curie's thesis. I already have great respect for my partners' work, but I'm really glad she works with semiconductors instead of heavy metals!

    I remember when I was learning about elements at my small high school in the suburbs of Australia, I always thought of Polony (the luncheon meat) when I heard of Polonium. Now that I'm older, it's pretty obvious it was named after Poland. It turns out Polony is called Devon outside of Western Australia.

    I liked title of her work 'Substances Radioactive'. Such a title might be harder to publish nowadays as they tend to run on multiple lines, particularly titles in biochemistry.

    "Energy stored millions of years ago through fusion" is the most important insight about all of this.
    That makes me think that Gravity can be used as a form of infinite energy, or an energy transformer.

    Such a gem. Really appreciate pointing out the limited, and effectively utilized, "subjective aesthetic judgements" in this thesis. So much now seems to be driven by "subjective aesthetic judgements" stemming from non-science based bias'.

    The desk that she worked at is still radio active to this day.Her husband died of cancer in all likelihood of radiation poisoning.They didn't understand the implications of handling radioactive material.Truly a great couple totally dedicated to there work.You remind me of her

    it's Marie Sklodowska- Curie. She had double barrelled surname. It is stated on her Nobel Prize certificate. Both of them actually. Please include that in the video title, not just the description :)

    When a Young boy I was given a 'Lady bird' book about Marie Curie and read of Her life and great achievements. Toby now explains some of the actual work in detail.

    Hi Tibees ! Just a small tip about french old research files (thesis, publications, articles, etc) : you can find them on www.gallica.bnf.fr, an open-access datafile which gathers all the document published (including some thesis, old mathematics textbook, etc.) in France before the 1940's - 1950's et numerized by the french national library (Bibliothèque nationale de France)

    6:45 If I remember correctly polonium was used in the Manhattan project. Also used in removing dust from vinyl records, photo negative strips, movie reels etc. Apparently you can make polonium from bismuth isotopes in a particle accelerator through transmutation.
