Back in the day, Nickelodeon was the king of cartoons. Shows like Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, and CatDog are absolute nostalgic classics today. But when it comes to classic Nicktoons, no show was bigger than Stephen Hillenburg's, "SpongeBob SquarePants." And in today's episode of "A Brief History" we take a look at how SpongeBob became a 2000's phenomenon and how the series has managed to last nearly 20 years!

Since making this video, Spongebob creator Stephen Hillenburg has passed away.
His creativity shaped a generation, his legacy will be long lasting, and he will be dearly missed.
RIP.
I heard about it from my friend and ran straight to my laptop to confirm it. This year has all been a simulation, its gotta be.
Just to think...this was two weeks ago...
Having a TV show be on the air for twenty years without getting cancelled is a huge accomplishment and Hillenburg was the one responsible!
I can't believe that he is gone, he influenced my life so much. The oldest memories I have are of watching Spongebob with my family, thank you Steve Hillenburg for all the great memories.

Yeah, even as a kid, I loved how the fire went out the moment Patrick pondered aloud how fire is possible underwater. I think FootofaFerret has it right; those first three seasons are just as good today, and it's mostly up to the clever writing and compelling visual humor.

I loved watching Spongebob when I was a child. It's very funny and I really like the songs. I still watch it even though I'm 14. I'm just not going to give it up. Spongebob was part of my childhood and I grew up loving that show. Hearing that Stephen Hillenburg died made me feel so sad and I want to thank him for making that show.

Seasons 1-3 is the era of dank meme culture, season 4 is decent, season 5 is where it starts going downhill, seasons 6-8 is the king of dark moments, seasons 9- present is back on track but it doesnt fell the same ;-;

Finally, the history of a good anime series!
Sponge bob taught me quite a bit of things. Not that cliche ‘love yourself, plant some trees save the bees and clean the seas’ bull crap, but stuff we use later on in life. For example, the episode where spongebob believed in Santa and squidward denied his existence, then squiddy boy got a letter from Santa and a gift from spongebob (a new flute) and squidward gave out everything he had to make others happy and he had nothing, teaching us that we don’t have to give everything away for other people. The small things make you the happiest.

Seasons 1-3 Are usually considered the best seasons. Good jokes, the characters were nice. E.t.c. Overall great start considered by fans.
Seasons 4-5 Are said to be not as good as seasons 1-3, but still considered good or decent. (Season 5 having grosser imagery and has what are considered some of the worst episodes. Atlantis Squarepantis, Whobob Whatpants e.t.c)
Seasons 6-8 Are considered the worst seasons of the show. (Season 7 considered the worst season in the entire series by most fans.) Some pretty gross imagery is in Season 6 compared to Season 7-8. But Seasons 7-8 have some cruel jokes and episodes, and are more mean spirited. And a bunch of rehashed ideas are in Seasons 7-8. But some people consider Season 8 mediocre.
Season 9-A is considered mediocre. But fans say some AWFUL episodes were in Season 9-A.
Season 9-B is considered to be better than Season 9-A. People say some great episodes are from Season 9-B.
Seasons 10-11 are considered great seasons by fans, almost as good as Seasons 1-3. Especially Season 11.
season 4 is nothing like 5.

Now it makes sense why I never watched Spongebob. I saw a post-movie episode and it turned me off and scared me as a kid. Im going to be 30 this year. Sponge bob will always hold a special place in my heart and i will forever be attached to season one.
