    Only too valid in the current day. When Nixon speaks, it is obvious how much more educated the populace was in his day.

      That's because America's educational system was focused on teaching history and the basics. Not focusing on indoctrinating America's children into a far left ideology.

      The press and media made Watergate out to be 1000 times worse than it was and of course the democraps at the time ran with it.

      What's sad about this clip that is can be fairly interpreted in two very different ways: as either statement of principle, or as cynical dog whistle. The cynical perspective is that this is merely a "states rights" dog whistle. This speech happened during desegregation. No one wanted to hear what Nixon was saying here more than southern whites - the same people who would propel Nixon to a landslide reelection victory the following year.
      This is the Southern Strategy narrative (Republicans luring away former Democrats via mostly coded appeals to racial animus). But that narrative must be counterbalanced with the genuine feeling among many of the time that Democrats had overreached with its social welfare ideas like the Great Society.
      There's simply no way of knowing Nixon's true intension. Nixon was very sophisticated and had convictions, but his extreme immorality in pursuit of his own political self-interests taints everything he did, and helped usher the GOP down a dark path.

    The problem he did not foresee was that, with resources flowing from the central government to the states, there are strings attached.
    The Constitutional Convention was only supposed to amend the Articles of Confederation, not replace it.

    But then Nixon created another Federal bureaucracy - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)!

    • @TheStockwell
      @TheStockwell Месяц назад +8

      No offense intended, but there was a definite need for it. The uncontrolled levels of pollution in the water, the air, and massive oils spills off the coast of California made the creation of that department necessary.
      Nixon authorized the creation of the EPA. He didn't turn it into a bureaucracy - his Republican and Democratic successors did that.
      Best wishes from Vermont ❄️

    Too much incentive for the parties on the federal level to force their shortsighted culture war goals on the other side's states. They won't risk looking weak to the base by allowing for heterodoxy while they hold power. Hence why both parties have only ever increased federal power in the modern age.

      I like Trump but c'mon man. Comparing Trump to Nixon is objectively stupid. They were two very different presidents in two different times. Even their personalities are night and day. Trump by nature is gregarious, combative and lavishes public attention while Nixon was rather reserved, shy, private but with a sharp mind

    Nixon was right but did a terrible actually achieving this. No one since FDR gave the federal govt so much power.

    He would beat Trump and Biden in 2024 like a drum in a presidential election. He can articulate a sentence and understands world politics and our place in it. Nixon could have prevented the middle east quagmire that Jimmy Carder blundered spectacularly. I miss politicians that could think critically about policy and not just what will line their pockets for the next election cycle.
