  • You might already know that I’m a huge advocate of using some kind of modular system for packing, but this is taking modularity to the next level.

    HOW I REVIEW:
    As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
    DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
    A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
    LINKS:
    For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals.
    For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.

    This bag looks pretty awesome, but unfortunately the weight of it really put me off. However, that sweater you're wearing looks awesome! I love the collar on it 👌

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад +1

      It's a great bag especially for photographers, videographers or guys like us who carry lots of equipment. Having the option to transform an equipment bag into something else totally makes up for the weight imho. But at first that weight put me off as well.
      the sweater is a Nike SB sweater ;-)

      Hey Bo, just following up to say thanks again for putting me in touch with Black Ember about this bag! I've since been using it a lot and don't find the weight to be as big an issue as I thought I would! I've also just posted my feature of it too ✌️

      These new tech bags are great. Sadly, in their effort to create things that are durable they in turn make things heavy, cumbersome, and over engineered. To me, the perfect urban backpack should be flexible enough to carry a variety of items, lightweight, and durable. I use my backpack because I need to stay mobile and house my belongings. The last thing I want is something heavy.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +thepkeezy agreed. It is a fine balance between weight and durability. But to be fair, this bag is highly modular, so the weight will be determined by the modules you attach to it. The heavy weight mentioned in this video is with all the modules included

    • @thepkeezy
      @thepkeezy 7 лет назад

      True, but it all still strikes me as over engineered. I come from a backpacking and outdoor background so I'm use to things being extremely well made and amazingly lightweight--and that stuff is for hard and rugged use. I don't think enough credit is given to consumers on how well we take care of our possessions. Maybe it's an outdoor company that needs to step up and make a "tech bag". I'd love to see what Patagonia and Osprey would have in mind if they ever decided to do something in that category. The modules are great, but why so robust? Most of the people who consider getting this type of bag are adults and aren't running around being wreck less crazy kids and carrying heavy loads. It wins completely in the aesthetics category but falls short of many other equally important factors.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +thepkeezy agreed. I'd love to see Patagonia do a tech bag.
      In regards to being "robust", this is considered a tech or photo bag. Lenses or Harddrives are fragile equipment. And while you might be careful, there are instances when people around you are not and bump into your bag. Therefore a robust or well padded cube is more than welcomed

  • @jonashanna6434

    I've always thought that BE stuff was cool looking but just a bit fussy looking with the accessories on the outside. This bag however looks awesome but the weight had my jaw on the floor! I have and consider the 40l Goruck GR2 a heavy bag at almost 5 pounds alone (their packing cubes are also heavy). So much so I usually pass over it for air travel. Funny enough even owning the Red Oxx Air Boss, Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 and Tri-Star my go to back is almost always the Topo Designs Travel Pack! There isn't much buzz around this pack when discussing top carry on bags but for me this just hits the right notes on capacity, weight and access.
    If the BE V4's production model weight is reduced I would love to add this one to the arsenal as I too love the modularity and look!
    Thanks for all your reviews - I always look forward to watching them!

    Nice preview, Bo! I've BE's Gen 03 Citadel and I absolutely love it! Looks like they're back in the game with this v4 Travel Backpack (like the Aer's one). In terms of mods, it seems they go back with the old Gen 02 mag-lock for connecting those pouches, rather than the Gen 03 dual clasp design :(

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      THank you very much. I haven't used the dual clasp system yet. Matter of fact: This is the first Black EMber Bag that I had the chance to try. How is the dual clasp system different? Is it as fast to use as well?

    All i can say about this multifunctional backpack is WOW since it is extremely versatile for travelling, add to this the fact it is a carry-on and design is pretty flat but still it looks great. It kinda reminded me of Aer Travel BP, idk why. Thnx for the review, video quality is perfect and unbiased thoughts thoroughly leads to the decision - to buy it or not.
    P.S. Have you ever tried Standart's carry-on backpack? I've recently found it in official store for 179$. Looks good.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +oOcitizenOo thank you very much. The bag reminds me of the aer as well. Probably because of the shape and material, but they are quite different indeed. The bag is not yet available to the public, therefore there probably will be a couple of small changes. And it will be interesting to see the prices. But for a photographer or videographer this will be the perfect bag Imho. I have a couple of photography bags that I just can't use outside of photography, but this bag is great as it's so transformable.
      I haven't seen the standart yet. I will Google it. 😉

    Awesome video as always! Have you seen their other bags? I would like to know your opinion on their outside magnet pouches.
    Personally I prefer the Molle because I think it feels more like part of the bag, but in this backpack I really like it for the fast attach and detach

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +Erik Valenzuela thanks, Eric. And thanks for always watching my videos.
      I have seen their other bags as well and I was really wanting to review one of their bags for a very long time.
      I totally agree with you on having pouches on the outside being "not a part of the bag", but for me it is the same with molle. I don't like attaching molle pouches outside of the bag, which was also one reason why I bought the GoRuck with it's internal molle.
      But The maglock system inside this bag is awesome. Being able to switch cubes on the fly is great especially for a photographer or videographer

    • @erikvalenzuela9625
      @erikvalenzuela9625 7 лет назад

      yeah me too, i defenetly don't like having small pouches on the outside, but the one from heimplanet, the big one with 4 rig, i think it's pretty good, it kinda seems like one of those mission workshop's add-ons.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +Erik Valenzuela that is true. With a correctly attached molle pouch it is not that bad, but I still wouldn't attach one outside if I can help it 😉

    I have always felt like attaching packing cubs inside the bag is some what redundant. I understand if you aren't filling the back and are only carrying a camera it's great since it holds it in place. However I mainly use my bag for travel and I have an Aer travel pack I find typically the cubes don't move at all if you are actually filling the bag up and I would rather save a little weight

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад +1

      +ahastar1141 totally agree with you when it comes down to "just clothing". But with equipment that is slightly heavier it is great to have everything stay in place and not moving to the bottom. My Goruck is a great example. I put my charger and mouse in a field pouch that is attached inside the top of the main compartment. Having it stay in place helps a lot with organization and comfort of the bag.
      But in my aer travel pack with just clothing I just drop my cubes inside.
      Cheers.

    Hi Bo, thank you for another excellent video! I have been watching your videos for a while and am enjoying them a lot :). Great work!
    One question about the hip belt of this backpack, as I noticed it´s only attached to the backpack with hooks but does not run behind the back padding: For a fully loaded backpack, did you feel that this construction transfers the weight from your shoulders to the hips very well? Or is it only useful to keep the backpack from bouncing around when you´re on the move?

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад +2

      +Fabian Stein thank you very much, Fabian. And thank you for watching my videos.
      To answer your very valid question. To be honest I never or rarely use hip belts. I found the bag quite comfortable to wear fully loaded without the hip belt. But I would assume that it will secure the bag on your back and take of a little of the load, but probably not as efficient like a hip belt that goes around completely.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  6 лет назад

      +Pablo Howland it kinda depends on your size and the amount of stuff you want to pack. For me personally it is too big for everyday carry as I am only 170cm tall. It is a quite bulky pack as soon as you fit all the cubes inside. Therefore it looks huge on my back as soon as it is fully loaded

      Bo Ismono in the USA they would be in local, county, state, federal buildings as well as private companies that have trademarked and proprietary trade secrets on site.

    Hey Bo, how much did this set-up weigh after you detached the laptop sleeve and waist belt?

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      That is a good question. I'm currently traveling so I can't weigh it, but I would guess about a kilo less

    • @jonashanna6434
      @jonashanna6434 7 лет назад

      Ok. Thanks for the response. Is the bag deep enough to fit 2 #4 compression cubes on top of each other in the main compartment? So basically in travel mode you could fit 4 #4 compression cubes inside.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +Jonas Hanna that depends on how full the cubes are. But I would recommend not to use four cubes inside in the way you are describing. But way do you want to stack four cubes over each other?

      +Neil Regalado hey Neil.
      You are in luck. Just yesterday a pacsafe carry on bag arrived at my door 😉 it might take a while to review though, because I have to review some other bags first. But let me know if you have any questions beforehand

    • @neilgcffitz
      @neilgcffitz 7 лет назад

      That's great! I've been a pacsafe guy for 5 years now. Well, I live in SE Asia so it's quite a load of my mind when I wear it. Thanks so much and I love your channel!

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад

      +Neil Regalado I totally know what you mean. I visit Indonesia quite regularly. And while I feel quite streetsmart, it is quite the ease of mind to be able to either lock the bag securely in the hotel or knowing, that a pickpocket can't easily slice through the bottom of the bag.

    • @Youknowthebo

      +Neil Regalado and thank you very much for your support

    • @neilgcffitz

      Although many pacsafe bags are equipped with locks, I still carry with me a bike chain and a tsa lock for added protection. I did feel stupid going around Japan in it though.
      Ps. What happened to your survival series? I am really interested because I just finished my Red Cross training and would like to equip myself with stuff to make me alive. Hehe. Don't forget paracord + Firestarter in your kit if you continue!

      +Karthik Shetty hey Karthik,
      I would suggest he aer travel pack. That is a great carry on bag. But depending on your height it might not be a good everyday carry. Check out my review on that bag

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  7 лет назад +1

      +Dynamic Duo that's a good suggestion. I recommend the aer because Karthik asked for more carry on bags in another comment
