Beat me to it. Only justification is that Speilberg's insanely ridiculous hatred of guns is "Fans know why".
He's played fast and loose with things he did not like in historical dramas, too -- the most obvious being at the end of Schindler's List, where you see Schindler's Jews casually waiting for soldiers. In *reality*, Schindler armed his Jews, so they could resist any depredations that came, such as a platoon of SS troopers. But... guns. So... ***_No! No! No! No!_*
The other case is Amistad (no, no guns here)... the end has his protagonist, Cinqué, going back to Africa. In reality, there is strong evidence that he actually moved to the West Indies and became involved in the slave trade himself. But that doesn't fit the narrative of "blacks were only the victims of slavery, never participating in it" -- even though the first chain in almost all transitions to slavery usually derived from fights between black tribes and the captured, losing tribe becoming slaves of the winners -- and, once the transAtlantic slave trade opened up, had them being sold into slavery in the Americas -- _by their black captors/owners..._

The first of the Brendan Fraser/Jon Hannah movies. When released in cinemas and the first DVD release had “three months later” between O’Connell’s initial escape from Humanaptra and Evie’s introduction. Its now “three years later” which means certain lines no longer make sense, including the line about Beni not having kids, Alex’s age in the second film and the trio of minor bad guys saying that it was 10 years ago that the original film took place

I remember when the second and third Pirates Of The Carribean films went more green almost as if to copy the Matrix sequels and it threw me off as the first film had a more golden tone to it so made it feel like a separate film. The worst edit I’ve ever seen was an airline version of “Almost Famous”. They cut the entire ‘turbulence freak-out’ scene (for obvious reasons) from the movie. They just showed them getting on the plane being all happy then cut to them walking off the plane all quiet and upset. The problem was that scene in particular was pivotal for a number of characters and left a gaping hole in the movie.

As they said, sometimes home release is the made from TV or in flight movie version. That being said, I was on a flight back from Japan, and the in flight movie was an uncut version on Cast Away. XD

What about replacing the Pointer Sister's "I'm So Excited" with June Pointer's "Little Boy Sweet" during the scenes when Christine Brinkley is driving the Ferrari 308 GTS in National Lampoon's Vacation?
The official explanation is something like "Little Boy Sweet" was on the Vacation soundtrack album but it wasn't in the initial theatrical release so Warner shipped out a second set of prints with "Little Boy Sweet" while Vacation was still being shown on the big screen in 1983 (this was back when successful movies still played on screens for months on end).
The interesting thing is, on DVD, the audio tracks for French and Spanish still have "I'm So Excited" playing during the Ferrari scenes. I like both songs but I think "I'm So Excited" works better in the context of the scenes.

@@369frequencyandvibration From what I've read there's been a demand for a director's cut to be released, but the director said it couldn't be because most of the extra footage is now gone. It's too bad because the film that exists now is definately dull

The film Convoy had a few minutes cut for the Studiocanal dvd release I assume to give the disc a lower rating. To sell more discs in the family friendly market. I think the VHS had a 17 rating but the DVD was pg i think. I noticed first time watching the. DVD that during the interview the Big Nasty flashing his butt at the reporter was gone. So i looked at details and the original theatrical release was a few minutes longer. Not sure what else was trimmed

The Men In Black one could just be some sort of audio error during the making of whatever copy was used for streaming. A similar thing happened in the Spongebob episode 'Sonethibg Smells'. On the dvd, Spongebob says the line 'I just don't get it' back to back because of an audio error.

Across The Spiderverse apparently had some stealth changes added into the theater release a couple days after it came out as well. I watched it on opening day, and then again with my dad a couple weeks later and there were some minor dialogue and visual changes. Nothing that broke the experience, but still enough to catch the attention of Reddit.

Movies that were changed post theater release. The Godfather and the Godfather part 2 were edited to become the Godfather Saga Part 1 and Part 2. Francis Ford Copla had to take Paramont to court to get a judge to say they couldn't edit it without his permission. Thankfully the blu-ray release is "restored" to the original.
Lord of the Rings : Fellowship of the Ring, edit because a car got into frame.
Lilo and Stich. Original version showed Lilo hiding in a dryer. The Blu-ray release makes it a dresser and a pizza box. Which raises the question, why make it a dryer in the first place.

The best joke in Naked Gun 21/2is sadly cut short in every home media version since it's 1991 release.
When Robert Ghual is pushed off a building towards end of the film, he falls screaming which switches to him singing 'On a clear day' before hitting the ground and being mauled by a lion.

The Martian is a big example of changes. The original Theatrical version had a lot more scenes of Mark Watney on Mars, and a bunch more jokes. These scenes were great. The home version thou is the Chinese cut, which takes out almost all of these scenes and replaces them with random cuts to China with a whole other plot of China talking about trying to save the day.
With time it is becoming harder to find the original theatrical version online anymore, but you can still find it. Why this change was done is extremely strange. The feels of both cuts are so different from one another.
An example of a show doing this is Stranger Things. There are many sites that have a side by side comparison of the original first two seasons and they cut many things and change other things.

I never see it appear on lists like this one... but i swear i remember going to the theater to watch the original Anchorman, and in the scene they are discussing the big alley fight that had just happened, Steve Carrell's character said, "I ate a big red candle." When i watched it a year later on dvd i was confused about why they took that particular line out of the movie.

I have got a VHS copy of the Steve Martin film "The Jerk" (1979) There is a scene where Navin Johnson (Steve Martin) is listening to the radio. There is an instrumental record playing. This is a COMPLETELY different tune to the one which is now in the film. I would love to know the title of this original tune because I thought it was very good (better than the replacement) I can't play the tape as I don't have a VHS machine !

The first time I notcied something like that was for the VHS of the movie Slapshot. Its soundtrack was cheap sounding and very distinctive. Then on the DVD I got to listen to the original soundtracks with more popular sound including a song by Elton John. I always preferred the cheap one as it fits the atmosphere of the movie so much better.

The movie Failure to Launch had an fairly long scene where the main characters are playing a card game... the game is "Bull Sh*t"... in the tv version the entire scene is hilariously overdubbed with the word Spit.
Although most changes I notice are either to remove something that shouldn't have been there, or to just fix a problem.
Examples... In Ant-Man when Scott is fighting Falcon, Falcon is actively talking into a radio, and no one responds to him, ever... in the theatric version. There was dialogue added later to have someone respond.
And notably to me, I was a very young kid when Jurassic Park came out, and there is a mistake in the scene with the T-Rex and the Jeeps, while flailing about it the mud some accidental contact happens, and this is visible in the Theatric and VHS versions, but was removed for all Digital versions.

I wouldn't say the Netflix version of The Notebook doesn't kill them off so much as it changes it to an implication that they passed rather than show you, still an odd change though.
Funnily enough I did some work experience in a music store when I was in high school and the manager(not owner) was serious about Stairway To Heaven and Smoke On The Water being banned, couldn't play it on the stereo or any of the instruments without him getting aggro about it. Never did find out why.

On my 20 year anniversary DVD it has presumably the original gunfire sounds, which were like explosions, but since then I've seen versions more recent than that differentiate the sounds of different guns and it just doesn't sound nearly as impactful

For me one of the BIGGEST changes to a movie that is very disappointing is Knocking on Heavens Door playing at the end of Lethal Weapon 2. Most people look at me like I'm crazy when i mention it, but it DID happen. It's even on the soundtrack. Yet, the blu-rays i have of the movie have a completely different song for the ending scene. If you look it up on Google, it says "Cheer Down" is the final song. But other articles say Knocking was the final song. It's strange it was changed because it matched that scene so perfectly.

Each version of the movie in the cinema had its own unique appearance! I saw th movie 3 times and saw 3 different movies... It is supposed to simbolize that things happened different in each universe, remember the motto? Every universe has its own different version of facts of even completely different outcomes? That is what it was... Gezz!
