4 years later the explanation is in the main mode the A.I is programmed to take shortcuts and what not, then there's also rubber-banding, I.E they all of a sudden start driving full speed or they throw way more traffic at you. In arcade the A.I does none of these things, because the A.I does not have a set path and will almost always take the main road to get to the next checkpoint. That's why there is no checkpoints on the railroad tracks in San- Diego Then to top it all off both have a quirk where the other racers view you as an obstacle and will try to avoid you at all cost. (2:10) This is way more prominent and abuse-able in arcade mode as well
