    The first computer game I actually owned for my Amiga 500 almost a lifetime ago -- And I Still love the game. In my opinion Dungeon Master is one of the greatest games ever made.
    This movie doesn't solve all of the puzzles in the game as most of them are not required to finish the game. I tried to avoid boring "training" periods, but there are a couple of them -- Sorry about that. -

      Fredrik Wannmyr haha my friend also played at amiga then pc fury started to happen I think it was called dx 400 God can’t remember the model of pc right now but after amiga felt like super fast. Played dungeon master long long time. I was so scared of playing and getting jumped of every corner by mobs I stayed at room where tree shriekers keep spawning and leveled there months. Well, leveled to a point most characters were maxed out and had like 750-850 hp range each characters and I was walking through fireballs without worrying about dying lol. I had some friends coming and keep seeing me at same room leveling up and they thought game was all that room and were saying what a boring game same place always lol...

  • @Chordonblue
    @Chordonblue 8 лет назад +67

    Two things my friend and I discovered way back when:
    1. Use the see-through spell on the Level 1 Door to the outside, and you'll see Chao's twin (Order) standing in an ominously dark night outside.
    2. Bring the fully formed staff back to the Level 1 Door, and you'll confront Lord Order... Well... 'Confront' might not be the best word for it.
    Such amazing attention to detail, and even more so, that the developers even considered the possibility of someone heading all the way back up to do these very things. Amazing!

    • @ugraugra
      @ugraugra 4 года назад +11

      Actually that was the original quest - to bring the staff back to Lord Order. But when you do it, it ends badly (alternate ending). It was the twist of the game - you should have realized that you should seek balance (it was written on one of the scrolls), so you go on, complete the staff and use it to fuse Chaos & Order into one - Grey Lord who represents balance.

    Thanks for a fantastic trip down memory lane. I loved this game growing up. Played it numerous times. But I am amazed at your capability to play it straight through, without saving, and with no deaths. You can definitely claim the title of Dungeon Master.
    Even though I have not played this for nearly 15-20 years I still remember a lot of the maze paths and puzzle sequences and was mentally following the paths of your party as if i was playing it myself. Thanks once again.

    I played this game with a friend a very long time ago on his Atari ST computer...We were so bad! We did'nt know about RPG's and dungeon crawling at that time... I miss the days when we were talking to others to know what to do next instead of watching over the internet... I know, i'm old hahaha!!!

    • @etatti
      @etatti 8 лет назад +8

      +Mighty366 You nailed it. Today it is all about checking on the internet, nobody asks anybody about tips and tricks anymore. I used to play this game with my cousins. We were taking turns, one of us would control the party and the others would map the way and note down spells. It was like being a real D&D party! CLASS!

      +Enrico Tatti You would have loved Hired Guns, probably Bloodwych as well. A little later than DM, myself and a few friends had ST's and we were all addicted to Captive, we raced to complete it one summer, damn good fun. I still play it to this day.

    • @Chordonblue
      @Chordonblue 8 лет назад +1

      +Mighty366 And another thing we didn't have back then: Cheat books that were released on Day One of the release. God, that pisses me off! No, I don't care if they do it, technically, anyone can do what they want as long as it isn't hurting me, but in DM and games like it back then, you wanted to feel as though YOU DISCOVERED something!
      I was there with my friend when we discovered Lord Order standing at the Level 1 front door and tried to make him open it. I'm not sure how many others tried it, but back then, you wouldn't be.
      I'm old enough to remember my friend 'discovering' the hidden 'dot' and message room in the Atari 2600 'Adventure' game. He thought he was the only one who had found it. Well he was... In his neighborhood - and boy weren't the rest of us kids impressed! :D
      A few years later, I found an easter egg in 'Fathom' for the 2600 and many years later, I found out that NO ONE else had found it yet. Even the developer (Rob Fullop) had forgotten it was there! :)
      That's what's truly missing in today's games - the fun and surprise of discovery. These days, when a game is released, there's nothing new to find to impress anyone with, nothing that hasn't already been written about on game review sites and the books. Sad...

    I disagree, my friend. One of the things that makes this game very nervwrecking and tense is the fact that it's quiet. I suppose it's a matter of taste, but bringing music into this game would've ruined it for me. Imagine this game with a midi-track - now THAT'S a fail.

    Best game on a computer I've ever played. In fact I'm playing it again on a emulator. At the time of it's release it triggered the sales of Atari St and Amiga to rocket. The game then led to games like Eye of the Beholder and eventually to Doom and in turn all the first player shooters and games nowadays. I'd argue this game was the beginning of all immersive games and even VR. At the time or shortly after, myself and my mate, said imagine if you could wear a powerglove and some sort of glasses and be on on a tread mill you could run around and play dungeon master. At the time we thought it would only be 5 years before that would be possible. Of course we are there now but it took 30 years so we were a bit out on our expectations.

    Damn I remember I played this for the whole week back in high school when I had a cold and I faked that I was still sick so I could keep on playing lol
    I remember I was grinding on this particular level that there were loads of mushroom monsters and I kept killing them with spells to train my wizards. I just killed, ate mushrooms, slept, wake up, repeat the cycle, for, like 3 days straight. I think I got them to be archmage or some level. The fireball spell they casted the size of those flames were gigantic, were almost the size of room height! And huge bang! Nothing survived!lol It was loads of fun.
    I had no manual so I had to figure out everything by myself (no internet back then) I combined every possible spell symbol to figure out what comes out! Took me awhile to connect the dots what the hell that “influx” spell was for. It was useless against anything except for that last dark Vader looking dude it seemed to trap him. And I knew then that infuse would kill him coz without cornered him the moment you infuse him he warps away to escape it.

      Wasn't there a room where Shriekers respawned and you could just farm them for food and xp? If you had the time, which apparently I did when I was 15.

    I always played Atarai St's version of Dungeon Master.I see some differences. That the characters can drink directly from the fountain, for example.The animation is a tad more rapide.Que some sound effects are also different.

    Never got to play it back in the day (c-64 into 486 pc) but watched my babysitter's husband play it a lot when I was a kid on the ST. Did get me big into the Eye of the Beholder trilogy though (think Dungeons and Dragons-flavored Dungeon Master).

    I put so many hours into this when I was a kid. I think there was a glitch in my copy of the game that would not allow me to complete it. My memory is fuzzy at this point, but I remember there being some sort of fire spell that just would not work. I even called the software company and they agreed to send me another copy, but I never bothered with it again.

    Back in the day I had read an article that said you could see the White Wizard at the entrance if you used the "See Through Walls" Spell. They also pointed out how you could use the Zo Kath Ra on the staff, then throw the staff to gain access to the upper levels of the dungeon. (If you have the staff on you and you walk past certain points, it will lock you out of the upper dungeon levels). I did that and went to the Starting point of the game, just inside the dungeon. I used the spell to look through the wall and saw the white wizard.... He said something about how I did not know how to use the Staff and killed me instantly. What a Dick!Sluggo

      sluggotg You don't need the complete firestaff (with the power gem) to make lord Librasulus open the door. You can go back as soon as you get your hands on the firestaff (when you use the master key) so there's no risk of getting trapped in the Dragon level ;)

      Thanks!! Now I am going to fire up my last saved game on my Emulator and go try it.. (maybe I should just fire up one of old Amiga's and do it full on floppy disk style?). Much Appreciated my Friend!

    I remember playing this on an Atari. I think my main weapons were the war cry and a chest full of large stones which I kept on throwing at the enemies :P

    You could have even killed that first opponent (the mummy) by pushing that switch again which makes the portcullis comes down on him but you gotta be fast and do it several times again, before it´s finally dead.

    I could never work out how to trap and defeat the final boss, spent several months attempting and re running this game in the 90s. Good game, bit grindy in the middle but I still think of this is being the epitome of dungeon crawler. Legend of Grimrock is essentially an uprated version of this though Ive never had the time to complete it.

    There was super easy way to kill the dragon at last level. Poison and lots of it and those freezing boxes off course was one way but you could use freezer to freeze the dragon at spot where there would hole above the dash to upstairs while keep using freezing boxes and from there just drop down from that particular hole in floor and kill the dragon instantly...Then you could stuff your face with those yummy dragon steaks

    Classic game ! Started a new game genre. ”1st person,real time,grid based dungeon crawling crpg”. A slew of others followed. Then came ”Ultima underworld” with free movement , and the copies of that. Enter ”Castle Wolfenstein” , ”Doom” & ”Elder scrolls” who led to all FPS games.
