for you who wondering this tutorial not working for your photoshop CC.. especially 2019... don't use alpha gradient... use black and white or other color... thank you for this great tutorial
*2021 - A perfect example of a tutorial. And at last, I finally know how to make my own halftone effects! No more grabbing photos in Google. Thank you so much, you are a life saver!* 😁
Thanks. I love halftones. Your example had an optical illusion of a grid when looking at it enlarged. Is there any noise that can be applied to disrupt that rigid grid?
This just doesn't work for me anymore and I can't figure out why. I already knew how to do it but I was getting weird results where nothing changes but it puts a bunch of single-pixel dots uniformly making up a pattern of squares but not like a complete dot grid, more like vertical lines of dots that cross horizontal lines of dots and leaves empty squares... it's weird and tough to explain... so I Googled to make sure I was doing it correctly, that brought me here. I'm getting the exact same weird results that I was getting on my own.
I have a problem, when I color half tone for one solid color it always puts another color in the middle of the circles. like the color I want solid black will have white in the middle of it. I do I fix it to where it's a solid color?
When I follow the steps on a black to transparent gradient, it works perfectly. When I try them on a white to transparent gradient (to end up with white dots for use in a layer mask), they don't do anything. (I can invert the black dots, of course, but it still seems weird that the technique doesn't just work on white like it does black.)
When I try to do this it doesnt work properly. for example, if I try to emulate the halftone circle done in the video, I get the half tone bleeding into all the black area. In otherwords the circle is not solid black in the center, but polka dot.
Well I was with you up until the Refine Edge which does not appear on my photoshop anywhere. Tried to wing it by just using the blur tool over the circle and then doing the color halftone which seems to do a photo negative effect when I try it with colors. Need help.
Im doing this in CMYK mode, but when I apply the halftone my spheres are entirely uniform as they reach the bleed of the gradient, are there any particular settings I should be adjusting to get the halftone circles to change according to the transparency??
Half tones have always scared me for some reason. Thought they were witchcraft. Lol This really opened my eyes. Thanks. Not sure why you didn't address the grid looking pattern in the picture demo. That's super distracting
That kind of defeats the purpose of the halftone effect. If you want to do that, then just make a circle, copy it as many times as you want on a straight-line, merge those layers, than rinse and repeat.
It won't work that. It needs to have two colors to sample from. Has to be done on a solid background (flat image) and in greyscale. Once you have the halftone-pattern, then you can go back to RGB or CMYK and adjust the colors.

Critical to mention that you set this up in CMYK. I didn't notice that the first couple of times watching this, but all good stuff to know :)
his file actually says RGB
thank you SO MUCH. You helped me a lot
Fabulous tutorial.
Thanks!! It took me a few run throughs to get all the required details right, but this is great, thanks!!

Thank you, this solution is very practical!
Beautiful

Hey, you! You are so good man! Thank you!!!
Hi Kevin. Any thoughts on why nothing happens when I try this effect in CS6? Thanks!
Yeah, nothing happens for me either
same

Do it in Grayscale first to get the halftone-effect. You can always change the colors later on.
What if you wanted to have the halftone a color instead of just black dots?
perfect thanks!
my problem is that the circles are not getting smaller as much as I expected, so they wont disappear in size .
Thank you soo much!
nice
Why I dont have refine edge button?
very good
great video !!!

awesome vid! thanks
I think this only works with old versions of PS...
Is there a way I can make all the circles the same size

circle thing didnt work, might be new version or something
For some reason it's not working for me with just black/transparent. It worked when I used a color, but not black. I'm using Elements 5, btw.

doesn't work for me
What about a diagonal halftone?
why cant I do it in RGB mode?
+Jay Son because when ever you print a image or text ..... some of the rgb colours do not print so , its better to use " cmyk "
delete what?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Que merda de scroll.
Tutorial is Okey... But u r talking tooo
Awesome
Thanks!
