  • Опубликовано: 6 сен 2011
  • KNOWLEDGE@WHARTON ARCHIVES: On September 11, 2001, New York City Fire Department Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer saw the first aircraft hit the North Tower and radioed the alarm, the first FDNY fire chief to take command. Today, Pfeifer is the New York City Fire Department's Chief of Counterterrorism and Emergency Preparedness and a Citywide Command Chief. Wharton management professor Michael Useem talked with Pfeifer recently about his leadership during the 9/11 rescue efforts, what firefighters in NYC and beyond do to prepare for the unexpected, and lessons learned in leadership and crisis management.

I'm in love with this man, the way he explains things, he's talking from his heart.......and he didn't even mention that he jumped on top of the French camera man to protect him when the north tower collapsed. Maybe it was a small action, and usual for firefighter but it tells a lot about someone... he's a hero

I am just now seeing this in 2018, this gentleman that I would want in my corner. Obviously I know the footage I know the story and all that but to hear him tell it like that in a calm cool voice, it's like you're right there. God bless him and everyone else involved, and those that lost their lives and the fireman that tried to help that lost their lives, again I hope they're all resting peacefully.

From the moment the plane hit the building - which he witnessed with the camera crew who captured the first plane hitting the WTC1 - he knew this was bad, but he was immediately on it and ready to help however he could. A true leader and a hero in my book - great example of a dedicated leader and a man who loved his men and loved the citizens of his city. With so many firefighters sick after 9 11, the ones we feel close to via the documentary, it is nice to have an update about their condition and life now. The calm, thoughtful demeanor of the Chief in this video was also on display on 9/11/01. I have listened the FDNY radio tapes many times. While others are screaming into the radio in near panic, the Chief (who was Battalion Chief 1 at the time) sounds in control and decisive, which I'm sure was reassuring to others.

I have seen this video quite a few times. I love and respect this Chief. After being a Firefighter for 27 years, one thing sticks out every time I watch this. The Chief says " The airplane didn't knock the building down. Fire did. He is correct fire did cause the building to collapse. However with his knowledge and experience he knows that the normal contents of those buildings plus plane fuel which is mostly kerosene, there is no way that combination will create a fire hot enough to melt protected concrete and steel. Not to mention the molten rivers of liquid steel that the Firefighters reported seeing in the days and weeks that followed. May God bless the 343 FDNY members that gave it all on that horrible day. So Sad! Police and EMS lost so much too and then there is the citizens. FDNY has lost many members since this happened due to exposure to asbestos/smoke and other chemicals/ect. My heart goes out to everyone of them.

The big gift that Chief Pfeifer has a a leader is judgment. He saw that the plane aimed at the building. He was the first to give evacuation order to firefighters. He understands the effect that situational stress has on the teams and what to do about it. You can't learn that stuff. You have to be born with it.

He's right about "information-sharing" that day.
While FDNY was climbing up and down stairs, blind, NYPD had a perimeter around the complex and a helicopter in the air, able to see everything.
While FDNY was inside, and got no word of the towers collapsing, NYPD knew right away, from the air!
NYPD didn't tell FDNY this fact on a radio, ever; everyone just found out on their own.
Yes, instinct kicked in, and everyone just used their eyes, ears, and feet on the ground, but some immediate #knowledge-sharing would have made all of that groundwork that much easier, especially for FDNY, who were operating blind. :'(

It didn't come down by fire, they heard boom boom sounds, then a firefighter said it looks like a bomb went off in the lobby, the plane crashed 80th floors up the lobby shouldn't look like that, plus all the smoke pouring out of building means no oxygen, so the fire wasn't burning hot enough to bring down building, I can't stand when we see with are eyes an someone will tell different, I don't know the man's ranking, he should be fucking hostile, loosing his brothers

He was the first team of firefighters to reach the lobby. He witnessed the lobby which was destroyed. He saw a couple people that were on fire in the lobby. He heard the explosions as the first tower fell . Yet he says fire brought the tower down. No wonder he's been promoted..

Joe G He n his company were the first to arrive on scene. That couple in which you speak of were in the elevator when the jet fuel ran down the shafts. Windows in the lobby were blown out due to the explosions.

All I'm saying is that many witnesses changed their stories to accommodate the official story in later interviews. I.e. Barry Jennings. So 3 steel buildings came down near free fall acceleration dues to 🔥....yeah uh huh ok sure...funny how 3,4,5 and 6 took the brunt of the debris yet the their steel structures remained in tact. But 7....lol the biggest joke of the whole event. Just follow the money......

He says connect, collaborate. And coordinate. Yea all 3 of those took place alright. He seems like a nice guy...but he doesn't seem like a guy with any conviction or faith in his own words. Like many others who remain silent and play along with official story so as to keep their lives safe and their pensions and future of their families.

ryan kostick No evidence to back that up. These guys know how dangerous high rise fires are - they tried to prevent the twin towers being built in the first place. Far too dependent on steel without concrete. They knew that they’d have to eventually deal with a fire and they knew it wasn’t going to turn out well.

    • @johnmoran1317

ryan-i agree completely.. neither fire nor the alleged airliners brought down the towers..i'm certain that some sort of explosion was involved. nuclear physicist dmitri khalezevov , on you tube, presented a reasonable explination-mini nukes in both of them.

the reason he may sound "bothered" might have something to do with the fact that the Lieutenant he was talking about on the Ninth floor directing firefighters to a safer stairway was actually his brother Kevin who died that day when the tower collapsed.

The video guy HE aims his camera to the building Wtc and holds the aim. THEN in half a hair second you can’t see that fast something explodes the building. You have to rewind the video over and over and over on the 6th time I STILL can’t tell what exploded !!!!!
And this pie feeder fire chief says “we saw the plane aim and hit the building. AIM. ???? All anyone knew was there was an explosion.

So this fella is saying he knew as soon as there was explosion that this was a terrorist ? Well, now how did he know that please? From the scripted story he was repeating? The problem with these actors is that they’ve never experienced the role they are acting and so it’s easy for a real life person who’s done these things to say what the hell ! You’re are very very bad actor my dear!
Except this is real life. And a real life serious critical criminal thing they’ve committed! Were not here to play George Orwell 1984 jokes.
So what do we do with these types of criminals? Strip them of their ranks, their property and........reverse all the assets they may have profited out of these lies.
    It’s a disgrace.

There’s video evidence of everything he is saying. And also the only reason it SOUNDS scripted is because this man has been asked to tell this story 1000s of times over the years so yeah of course after the 999th time telling the same story, it’s not going to sound as raw as the first time

In ⌛1979 ⏳I had a terribly vivid dream of skyscrapers falling in N.Yk. Then over the years I had dreams of standing at the base of the Statue of Liberty looking over to Manhatton, but I was climbing up and down large rocks and boulders around the base of the statue. Now I understand those dreams. I refused to never step foot into N.Yk because of those dreams. RIP to all the ♥souls♥ that died.
