For those of you suggesting individual Beatle songs, or The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, or The Who, you are wasting your time. Spencer (guy on the left) knows every single Beatles song/record as well as a vast majoriry of what The Stones, Pink Floyd, & The Who have done, so you'll have to suggest something that we're GUARANTEED to not have seen 😉

I just assumed Spencer wasn't that familiar with the beatles because he said 3 of the 4 sang on this one, when it was only john and paul that did. George harmonising but verse and choruses were only ever john and paul. Kind of simple stuff for a beatle fan or just someone familiar with them.

What’s shocking is that when this song and ‘Real Love’ were released, the BBC refused to play them, stating that basically, the Beatles are old and out dated for the youth market and we shouldn’t be promoting music made by people who are now in their 50s. It was such a controversy, that it was even brought up in Parliament, with even the Prime Minister calling the BBC out for the decision.

They only didn't play it on Radio 1,that's the young folks channel,it was played on the others,to give you an idea in those days you didn't so much follow a channel as a DJ,on radio 1 if you had an alternative vibe you pretty much ignored it till 8 in the evening! However when you age you naturally deny it, the time when you can no longer do this is when Radio 1 is on in your car, and some horrible RnB shite comes on ,you switch channels and eventually find a song you like, and a little of your perceived youth dies as you realise it's Radio 2☹️!!

The Beatles always seemed to have a rocky relationship with the BBC. There's the double album Live at the BBC of radio programmes from the early 60s, but the psychedelic multi-coloured Magical Mystery Tour film was first broadcast on the BBC in 1967 ... in black and white. As a result, The Beatles decided to have future dealings more with ITV, including when broadcasting Anthology nearly 30 years later.

Guys, the video you are playing is back to front!! the video you are playing shows the video from the end and reverses all the way back to what should be the start of the video, the video shown the right way shows the band from the photos in the bedroom at the start, then through the history of the band with many references to their songs, I love this song, I find it very melancholy.

Beatles are basically the no. 1 band ever. Yes they inherited 50's US rock n roll but they pretty much created dozens of styles that have been the blueprint for every band since. I listened to all their stuff growing up with mates doing way more mind enhancing stuff then I should have in the 90's😂 Having said all that my personal favourite band is the doors! 😂

Fantastic that you've reacted to this song. Free as a Bird and Real Love had their critics, but I think they are gorgeous songs. The highlight of Free as a Bird for me is George's vocals in the second bridge leading into his soaring but restrained slide solo, probably done on his Stratocaster Rocky and the stunning angelic vocal harmonies behind that only Paul and George (and John) could've pulled off. That solo though is so sonically lush and interesting. As a Beatles superfan, I've always wished that Paul and George were a little closer, but I know that they'd been friends since they were kids at school and, like brothers, their respective personalities evolved as they got older. Anthology was a good excuse for them to hang out and work together again, and I think they both enjoyed it. Jeff Lynne - a Beatles disciple, who along with Denny Laine I think of as the "Brummie Beatle", and certainly a bona fide "Fifth Beatle" - was brought in to produce the two songs, and it was hoped that he would also act as a peacekeeper. Jeff was a big friend of George's and he was worried that Paul might feel that he was being sidelined, but Paul and Jeff worked incredibly well together and got on like a house on fire. Everyone loves Ringo, but it was with Jeff that Ringo had a little friction because Jeff wanted to use a click track. The end of The Beatles was quite acrimonious and it seemed that George wanted to distance himself from that legacy, especially Paul. But by the late 80s, he'd put together The Travelling Wilburys, made the single When We Was Fab, attended the band's Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction and defended his friendship with Paul in television interviews. I love moments like that.
Great video, especially Spencer's commentary. Yes, the video is littered with references.

You might find this amusing. Recently a young group, can't remember who, had Paul McCartney appear on a track and someone hearing it said he didn't know who Paul was but was always happy to give a new singer a break. That's the gist of it anyway. Hilarious. The crossing you saw is outside the famous Abby Road studios. Yeah, that was a hilarious rumour. He'still going, of course. I was a bit Elvis fan and it took me some time to get into the Beatles but once I did I loved most of what they did.

There were three John cassette demos that the Threetles worked on: this, Real Love, and Now And Then. They did the first two, but the Now And Then demo was even lower fidelity, so they abandoned it. But… Paul just said that they can now clean it up with current AI technology, and they still have the tapes of them working on it, including George. So there’s going to be one more Beatles song later this year.

I love this song, as a song in its own right but there’s an added poignancy and sadness because of the two who have left us and because of the footage from the 60s digitally edited into the modern video. You're right the video is full of Beatles lyrics and references. There are a couple of videos on RUclips that show you the lyrics and references that even a fan might miss. Some of them are so fleeting that if you blink you'll miss them. It's worth watching them to appreciate everything in the video.

The license plate on VW Beetle on the Abbey Rd album cover says 28IF. This was supposed to mean that Paul would have been 28 IF he hadn’t died. He was supposedly replaced by a look alike named Billy Shears who was introduced on the Sgt Pepper album. There are so many more Easter eggs throughout their music. I could write paragraphs lol

My favourite is" The Beatles at the ABC Manchester 1963" which shows "She Loves You" when it was just out and "Twist and Shout".
Also good is anything from the first Washington concert February 1964 or any complications from any of the US tours especially at the Shea Stadium.

I think what a lot of people of my generation (90s) don't appreciate/understand about the beatles is how FAR ahead of their time they were. I constantly hear "oh they just sound like Oasis" errr yeah....40 years before Oasis existed. ..the beatles were singing about revolution when elvis was singing about hound dogs and blue shoes. They took music to a new level

    • @lynnejamieson2063

Eh, no. Elvis was singing about hound dogs and blue suede shoes in the mid 50’s and The Beatles were singing about revolution in the late 60’s. John Lennon is quoted as saying that before Elvis there was nothing. Around the time The Beatles were singing about revolution, Elvis was singing In The Ghetto and If I Can Dream, so he was singing about social injustice and racial inequality.
Oh and it was only 24 years between The Beatles splitting up in April ‘70 and Oasis releasing their first single in April ‘94.

@@lynnejamieson2063 your argument was elvis sang about da ghetto. My simple reply is that's not comparable to the beatles who wrote their own lyrics cos Elivs famously never wrote his own songs. You also can't really compare a singer to a band who also wrote music. And tbh play elvis to a 15 year old now compared to the beatles. Elivs sounds like his music is from the 50s ,60s. The beatles sound like a 90s imdie band. They were decades ahead of their time. They really are on different levels. Play a elivs song at the start of his career then one from the end...its the same style same stuff...he couldn't evolve cos he didn't write songs or music. He was simply a great voice singing other's words. .now play an early beatles song and one near the end of their time together. They changed music. Their music constantly evolved over 8 years recording. I eanna hold your hand is a total different style to come together...again it's different levels..

    • @lynnejamieson2063
      @lynnejamieson2063 2 года назад

@@brianmason8059 I think you have missed my original point altogether. I just changed the Elvis tracks that you listed to ones that Elvis was singing around the same time that The Beatles were singing Revolution, so that the timeframes were more similar.
I’ve been listening to The Beatles and Elvis for my entire life (almost 5 decades) as my parents were both fans of both. I have known for almost as long as that, that Elvis didn’t write his own songs and that The Beatles wrote most of theirs but I do feel the need to remind you that it was you who made the initial comparison, not me. My niece and nephew (both in their early 20’s) would be more likely to put Elvis on than The Beatles but I’m also not living under the assumption that would be the case for everyone in their generation.
Personally, I think a comparison between The Beatles and Elvis is quite disingenuous due to one being in part responsible for sparking the interest in the others to even join bands.
I get the feeling that you may not have listened to a great deal of Elvis music and that’s fair enough, he is not everyone’s cup of tea and the same can be said about The Beatles but Elvis sang many styles of music, his recording career wasn’t 22 years of Rockabilly. I also think that you may purely be referencing later Beatles material (especially as on the first few albums around half of the songs were cover versions and sound completely of their time and nothing like 90’s Indie).
I think we may be talking at cross points here as I’m sure there are elements that we agree on as well as some we disagree on. I love both The Beatles and Elvis, I saw Oasis for the first time in ‘93 (around 4 months before the first single, Supersonic, was released). I love elements of all three really, none of them are perfect (I’m convinced that perfection does not exist) but they all have more going for than against them, in my opinion…though I would say that you’ll find even more similarities in 60’s Garage Bands like The Seeds, to the guitar bands that were most prevalent on the Indie scene of the 80’s and 90’s.
Oh and thank you for not calling me lad again. I know there is a chance that it’s just a colloquialism where you’re from but being Scottish, it purely just means someone who is of the male gender to me.

Here's something you might like to try, guys. How about starting with the video 'The Beatles Reunion At Friar Park 1994 Full Version LEGENDS HD Rare footage' from the Anthology when they met up and recorded this track. In the Anthology series you see their last filmed reunions before George passed in 2001. Then go back and start from the beginning when they were just teenagers - a great story how they formed in the late 1950s then grew and developed. I grew up with their music and took an interest in them from when I was a kid, and still learning new things. I was fortunate to meet George's wife, Olivia a few years ago - a special moment for me.

Lots of Beatles songs referenced in "Free as a Bird" but WHY is the video running in REVERSE?? You didn't seem to NOTICE that it is all in reverse!! The girl ("She's Leaving Home") is going IN her door, instead of OUT of it to get into the "newspaper taxi" (from "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds") which is moving in reverse. The man playing the banjo on stage (that this video shows at the start) is SUPPOSED to be at the END when you HEAR a BANJO playing. The ROOM with the CHILDHOOD PHOTOS of the BEATLES on the MANTEL is supposed to be at the BEGINNING of the Video, NOT at the END like it is in THIS video. There must be a proper copy here on You Tube, where the video goes forward so that the timeline makes sense. It is supposed to start at the beginning of their time and to the end (Abbey Road crossing) of their career.

Please react to the beatles, guys. Please make it your next rabbit hole, I know you wont regret it. Your taste in music is great, and fact you love oasis, you will love the beatles even more. I heard oasis first and because they kept mentioning the beatles, I got into them as a 15yo. Oasis, I owe my whole musical taste to them really. Beatles, rolling stones, Slade, sex pistols, Smith's, the jam, the kinks (massively underrated may I add) I beg please learn and listen to the beatles, some suggestions.... strawberry fields forever, helter skelter (you 2 will love this one) rain (song liam found his voice from, and oasis were called the rain in an early incarnation) you'll hear rain and think, this sounds 90s or early 2000s. Ok others to check.... tomorrow never knows, shes leaving home, I am the walrus, a day in the life, revolution, day tripper, we can work it out, here there and everywhere, hey bulldog. That'll keep you going a while.
PLEASE listen to them, you won't regret it.
Rick beato mentioned an uber driver, girl in her mid to late 20s listening to music as she drove him, shed never heard of paul McCartney or the beatles.
Don't let their music die, you'll get others into them because you have a lot of followers.
In this spotify's generation, albums mean nothing, its download a song that you heard on a show or an advert these days.
The beatles need to stay prominent for todays youth to know them.
