Ironheads are so basic they are a joy to work on, a good factory manual and a lots of blue loctite and you're ready to roll.
my first bike at age 16 was a 1982 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 25th anniversary inherited from my grandpa and my 83 Harley Davidson Sportster 1000 Chopper 6ft Springer Front End I still have both today I just inherited a 1983 Kawasaki KZ750 LTD from my uncle
The modern Sportster Evo engines are still 90% the same as an Ironhead.
Love ironheads so much I have 3. 65 XLCH, 67 XLH and a 68 XLCH. Planning on getting an 82 XLH for my lady
Remember the xlx
Yeah, this is the one for me. :)
That stand's got attitude, quite literally. I never lean a bike that far over, not even when I'm riding. :D
I'm not trying to tell you what to do but you really should let the older Harleys warm up for a few minutes before you take off. It's really better for the bike. Ask any Cat that's into the older H-D's, they'll tell you the same. Please don't be mad, just trying to save you some blown gasket problems on the older Harleys.
hhhhmmmmm thanks for the info DJ i will take it into consideration
This guy don't care he's a total clown. Text book sales man
Everything out his mouth is bullshit and he knows very little mechanical engineering if any. Perfect example is this vid. Notice the bike runs like GARBAGE and can barley hold an idle yet he babbles about how great shape it's in and does anything he can to avoid it's issues. Things probably beet to death. I've rebuilt countless ironheads, and then pretty ones are always the worst inside. Valves are probably sunk in the head, carb dirty, intake boots shot valve guides smoked etc. That's why he's selling it for 2k. Cus it's a turd
Been riding my 82 for the past 3 years in upstate ny all year as long as there's no snow on the ground. I have straight pipes and live in a development so I start it and leave no warm up almost everyday and I've never had a head gasket problem. Just typical ironhead rattling itself apart. There almost indestructible if you know how to turn a wrench
@@JBidensucks hey cheif how do I know if an ironhead is running in good shape, I'm not exactly an expert on it at all I have no idea what to look for
you should really warm it up Sean; i regret the few times i haven't really warmed up my '06 XL1200C...after the initial warm up of the day you can get away with starting and taking off pretty quickly though!
It’s an ironhead, it doesn’t need warmed up.
I used to own one of those, it was a fun bike until I realized that I had to keep fixing it in order for it to keep running, I sold that piece of garbage, and bought a 1986 Honda gold wing, best motorcycle I ever owned, and I have owned many. Most were all Honda motorcycles.
just got one for $500, hasn't been registered since 2004 it looks like. belonged to the guys father. It's sat outside covered for awhile when I got it, I think it was stored inside for a few years though. Fuel tank was drained, Haven't started working on it yet. I think i'll just put a battery in and some gas just to see where i'm at with it. Sounds unrealistic but it would be neat if it just works lmao.
i have the 89 version, last year of the ironheads...oh its in England, dont worry I shall return when finished with it..
Iron heads have a great sound and pull well I would buy it to add to my stable
I got an 82 that was sitting for about 8 years parked and dead. I put a new battery on last week and sprayed it with starter fluid fired right up. Went and put new spark plugs and gas in the tank she's ready for a run
diddo what dj said. i know you dont buy a lot of these older harleys but they really need to warm up before riding to let the gaskets expand and seat right.
i dont think you are really going to want to watch a video of me sitting on the bike waiting for it to warm up
I don't know. You do the walk around and test ride videos. How about the 'warm up' videos ?
Then there's the 'putting gas in it' and 'parking it in the garage' videos ? :P
Very true, make sure the heads/rockers are at least warm to the touch before riding.
Srkcycles,warm it up,first,then record.
I would have buy it in a heart beat brother, if only I was in the states!!! @srkcycles
I would like to buy my first bike but wish the video wasn't from 5yrs ago
Harley's have bushings in the JIFFY stand which has a different working mechanism from a regular kickstand. The weight of the motorcycle locks the jiffy (patented name from a long, long time ago) stand into a slot to keep it from retracting to its parallel position above the ground. Another reason for the bike leaning so much is the profile of the tires may be different. When I replaced the factory Dunlop's with the same nominal profile Metzeler's, the new tires were so tall that my bike leaned like the one in the video. I had to add a Bung King 1" bushing to the bottom (horizontal) part of the jiffy stand. So, the previous owner of this Ironhead may be innocent.
Those bridges look like they are from Sleepy Hollow...
Sean, how tall are you? I'm thinking of picking this bike up in a few months. If the weather stays forgiving, maybe sooner
+grindsoul 6'2''
The kickstand is broken, on those bikes the kickstand will rest up against the primary chain area of the case when they break
Is it still for sale, it reminded me of my first bike
If you get any more Harley-Davidsons for around that price please let me know as that is what I am looking for
Did you get rid of that scooter
I fouund one of theese for 1500 but im 6'6 do you think i can fit u really sold me on a vulcan tho
T Kong if you get the right seat and get the riding pegs forward in front of the frame, you may be able to roll on it. I am 6’4” and did that with my 84 sportster. It a lot of fun...
Thats a good deal.
The kick stand has gone forward from wear on the stop. They all did this over time.
These bushings wear out on a regular basis. Easy fix.
Who bought the bike?
Cheapest sportster I've ever seen
my landlord scored a '90 for $1,750 but it needs a little carb work, nice bike though
Man, 2200 for that is steal
That bike isn't tuned right.
Let me do some upholstery work on some of your bikes for a bike. I own a mobile upholstery business. Apples for oranges?
That’s all he has 3 AM siren head
I want it
Yea I agree it's just stupid! Cuz the bike will fall over leaning like that, it's only a matter of time!
Weld an extension plate of the bottom of the kickstand to correct this stupidity.
NO
I found one for $1500
shovelheads and iron heads can not be made to decent bikes. not possible. run fast from it and don't look back
