    The tariff is explicit in that it only applies to Single Malt Scotch Whisky shipped from the EU. Given the Johnson victory,
    we can expect that later this year, shipments from Scotland will not be from the EU but from the UK, a Non EU country.
    So the tariff will not apply.
    For example, I recently bought some single malt Scotch at auction in Hong Kong, No tariff was applied on the shipment
    to my US address.

      Good point although how long it will actually take for Brexit will be measured once it actually happens. But yes it would seem legally correct to say the tariff would not apply from next month.

    Good Tariff comparison Phill. But I would never be able to buy 10 bottles . Do it would be even more expensive for me.

      Yeah not worth it unless you can share shipping with others and get to 10.

    Interesting video.
    I noticed that the price of American bourbon is cheaper here in Israel than it is in the UK.
    For Example. Elijah Craig Small Batch is 160 Shekels (£35). In the UK it's around £50!
    I have ever only paid Customs TAX when I brought whisky bottles in to Israel from the UK.
    I have never tried to buy anything online from the UK and have it shipped to me.
    Scotch Whisky prices here in Israel vary considerably between store and store, and no store is consistantly cheaper than the others for all Scotch Whisky. I know that if I want lagavulin or Laqphroaig then I go to this store and if I'm looking for Glencadam then I go to another store.
    I think it all depends on the store's importers and what deals they make for each Whisky company.
    Many bottles are around 25% to 200% more expensive. However there are a few bottles, such as all Tomintoul, Glencadam, Kilchoman and Bladnoch expressions, which are actually slightly cheaper here in Israel.
    There are many different factors, not just the TAX.

      Thanks Reb. We see similar things in small shops and rare bottles. Prices all over the scale, but the big shops are pretty consistent.

    The math is better if you are picking it up considering they won't charge VAT to American addresses and you won't pay shipping.....Just means you have to buy a lot...and visit Scotland

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  4 года назад +1

      That is true at least no VAT if it ships out of the country.

    Good topic Phil. Have not used the Auctions but bought quite a bit from the Whisky Exchange. If you shop low to mid range bottles, get enough to reduce the cost per bottle shipping and use their sales it was a very good value, but the tariff breaks that. Thinking of taking my 2018 George T Stagg to Glasgow to drop off at the Auction. Did you drop some off there or where you just picking up?

    • @WhiskyMystery

      I sold a few. Very easy and low fees. But you could also sell it easily here if you want to.

    I'm putting off bidding for a while until things get sorted out. The EU import tariff on bourbon went into effect in June of 2018. The US import tariff on single malts began in October 2019, over a year later. Both sides are hurting each other during the trade war, and both need to compromise. I wish they would stop messing with our whiskies ☹

    Just a heads up the 25% tariff wouldn't apply to Tobias & The Angel since it's a blended Scotch. Still expensive though compared to some places you can still find it here.

    Thanks for video! ...I have some active bids in the current auction and now have to take another look. I will say that for un-obtainable bottles, such as distillery exclusives, long gone independent bottlings, and very old bottles, such as 45 year old plus. There really isn't another choice.

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  4 года назад +1

      As long as you know the potential cost you can make a fair decision. I was just surprised when I realised a £100 bottle is really $200 now.

  • @romanb8154
    @romanb8154 4 года назад +1

    First, just to clarify, not that you said otherwise or don't know, but the tariff, for the US market will be applied at the import price, not the full retail price, so that HP 25 won't be, or shouldn't, be 160$ more expensive, more likely something like 50-70$.
    Then don't your parents live in Glasgow? And I'm sure they come and visit! Whisky mules :-)
    More seriously, if your father or mother is the one doing the bidding, wink wink, he's not going to pay the 25%, of the full price in this case...

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  4 года назад +1

      The 25% is calculated on the winning bid according to SWA. They also add 10% auction fee + shipping really adds up. If you do not ship to the US the no problem of course.

    • @romanb8154
      @romanb8154 4 года назад +1

      @@WhiskyMystery Yes, of course, meaning your father wouldn't pay the 25%, nor would I for that matter...
      However, and it was the point I wanted (and clearly failed) to clarify, the 25% for bottles you'll buy at K&L, TW etc will be not applied on the retail price, it's on the import price, so again you wouldn't have a 25% bump on the current retail price, most likely "only" around 10%...

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  4 года назад +1

      @@romanb8154 Ah yes now I understand so in a way the auction price is more like retail making the 25% worse than waiting for the US stock to catch up. I wonder what will happen at airports if bringing back extra bottles.

    • @romanb8154
      @romanb8154 4 года назад +1

      @@WhiskyMystery I think so (keep wanting to clarify and seemingly making it worse, lol)... I'm not categorical because the auction market is can be so volatile... if you check Port Ellen for instance, price have dropped significantly this auction (funnily enough 25-30%+) on almost all OB... 800GPB for a 4th release, and plenty others failing to meet their reserve.
      But you're right for the more common, still (somewhat) available at retail bottlings, it will probably still be worse at auction (when the lag ends), because the tariff is based on the import price (for SWA it's your winning bid, for the primary market because off the layers of fees, costs, profit margins etc added within the US it'll be a lower percentage in the end price).
      Of course, as mentioned anyone with non-US based friends and family, can bypass that should they want to ;-)
      The airport question is a good one, should be interesting, not sure they'd get into collecting tariffs, but you never know...
      At least a couple can still bring in 3 bottles free ;-)
      Cheers
