Great contest Chief! some promising welding skills there. I think it's very wise to foster interest in cadets for such foundational skills as welding. Years from now as a crew member one of these cadets might use his welding skills in an emergency to help keep his ship afloat and navigating. Cheers!

WoW! What a great incentive for the young cadets! Well done on your behalf & the companies & others involved.👍 Geez, maybe I should be training some of those guys, the kids I had in the Autoshop that I used to run would have definitely been in the running 😉 (I taught school kids one day per week while I was running my fabrication business which saw many of them take on apprenticeships once they left school) I love seeing people increase their skills no mater what their age. Well done on organising such a great event!!👍

In every aspect of life...if you are a seasoned veteran it should be the key path to lead less knowledgeable people to having their skills and knowledge helped to new levels. my 5 cents of thinking was always that if you dont share your knowledge then the knowledge goes to waste. Chief is doing an boss job of telling and teaching us about the life on the seas. I tip my hat to you sir.

I’m 69 and learnt to weld on our farm when i was 10 then did 5 yrs welding at high school, eventually studied welding and gained a Mig Pipe certification here in Australia.
I thoroughly believe that a person needa to learn stick welding in all positions as it makes for a good welder who progresses to MIG.
It gives a very good knowledge of pool control and heat control.
Every one I’ve taught to weld I taught stick first.
Its very easy to mig weld but although the weld may look good it may be full of cold lap, whereas a stick weld that looks good is a good weld.

As you, and other mariners both current and retired like myself know, welding is an important skill to have. Respect to those who are very good at it despite the infrequency in which hot work needs to be done on projects aboard ships. Staying proficient or improving those skills when you don't weld often or on a regular basis is a bit difficult. Not a daily or weekly demand, but when it is needed, it's needed. Well done chief. Have a good watch.

One of the contestants had great skill, using his left hand as a steady for controlling the rod (@6.20) and he also appeared to move the rod more than others, thereby getting good penetration into both pieces of metal, away more "fluid" action than others,, I wonder was he one of the winners?

Apologies if you have covered it before, but a video on electrical safety and dealing with energized circuits would be extremely interesting as well. I'm on land in the States, we have OSHA/NFPA70, very curious as to where they intersect with maritime industry.

Nice job. Welding is a handy skill, especially on a metal ship. Teach them young and it is far easier. I wish someone had taught me. I am self taught, with all the bad habits that go with that. Not very good with stick. Much better with mig. But could certainly learn more and improve.

Awesome to see. The best of these are guys I would absolutely bring in as apprentice welders. Are they given instruction in class rules so that they can supervise welders in service? and are they given the opportunity to qualify to class rules (to some qualified procedure, even though not transferable)? Do they get training, prior to this time or in the future, about the various steels and their properties/requirements for welding, procedure and practice (Charpy requirements, matching of strength, fitup, acceptance standards (ISO 58178, for example))? As I work in the industry, I really want to know what I should expect the crew to be familiar with, if not experts, from various places. The US engineering crew vary a lot, and most defer to class surveyor or company engineering, which sometimes don;t even know theor own rules....
