I think its because Yusuke spent most of their time roasting Kuwabara in school so having another person who agrees with him probably makes him happy. In terms of personality Hiei got along most well with Yusuke. Kurama may have understood Hiei better but Yusuke and Hiei thought alike many different times.
I think Hiei actually likes him. He allows Kuwabara to talk trash to him and although he says it in a sarcastic way he is usually the one explaining things to Kuwabara. I love on the boat where Kuwabara says "hey where did all the guys we were fighting go" and Hiei says, "they are already dead" like he is used to Kuwabara asking stupid questions at that point but admits he is strong.
That's actually how I imagined Kuwabara's voice sounded. Actually same goes to Urameshi and Kurama. Hiei is close, but I kind of imagined him being voiced by Liam O'Brian.

Considering Kuwubara is in love with his twin sister, Yukina. Yukina is either genuinely oblivious or really good at acting that way. As there's hints that she knows more then she lets on.
I'm almost 80 percent positive yukina knows hiei is her brother. She's given way too many clues. Like when he barked on her and her response was its what it's like to have a brother

What makes this show stand out from all the rest is the chemistry between the main characters. Each different, one common goal and a butt ton of laughs to go around.
Honestly, I love YYH. At a time when I was starting to feel burnt out over DBZ, this really drew me in with its plot, its characters, its attacks that actually had variation aside from "energy ball" and "energy beam". Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of this anime was the myriad of characters it introduced and allowed us to see in action. My only complaint is that it ended perfectly because now we'll never get a sequel (and I have no desire to see a reboot considering that they could only foul it up).

My point is that HxH is from the same author and it shows, He's improved as a writer in literally every way from characters, plot, powers, and world building. It's like he looked back at YYH said "ok, what was the stuff people liked about this?" and repackaged them into something new and then expanded on it with new stuff.
