So many strikers (including 2nd strstrik were at the same season. : Flo , Hughes , Vialli , Casseraghi and Zola. But at that time the main formation for most teams was 4-4-2.
We were so close to winning the league that year. Everyone forgets that and thinks we only existed from 2003 onwards yet we were so so close that year. Most people only remember it as the year Man Utd won the treble and to be fair they had a bloody good side but so did we. What did us in was not adequately replacing Casiraghi. He's remembered as another "chelsea striking flop" but he really wasn't. He was incredibly unlucky. He only scored 1 goal in 11 matches but the amount of times he hit the post, bar, or keepers made miraculous saves against him was ludicrous. If he hadn't got injured I'm sure he would've been a twenty goal a season striker that we were crying out for. What screwed us was the board. As soon as we realised he was out for the season (and eventually his career was over) we should've bought a replacement (don't forget, this was before the days of the transfer window, we could've bought a replacement any time in the season), unfortunately we didn't and had to rely on goals from midfield. Made worse when Poyet was out for 3 months after busting his knee on boxing day... Oh well, what could've been....
+Keith Fitzsimons poyet got 11 gls in 21 league starts from midfield but he got injured in december, they wud hav won the league imo if he hadnt got injured, poyet wud hav won player of season also.
got injured against west ham just when he looked like he was getting into his stride, such a shame his career was ended as a result of that injury. overall a real shame the blues didn't go all the way that year.
Didnt chels win a super cup v real madrid at the begining of the season. Plus finished 3 for there first ever champion league spot. Not to bad a season realy..

My first year as a Chelsea fan, I was 12 years old. Never looked back. Favourite players were Wise and Zola. Should've won the league that year.

Man I had that home shirt as a kid and used to idolise Zola so much! Also when I was at school I saw Vialli and Flo at an airport, memories...
