      That can be confusing for me, because usually adults have more experience than children, so, would it feel right if a child gave advice to an adult? Been thinking about this for some time now.

    • @elisahyebin
      @elisahyebin 3 года назад +81

      In Korean, the whole age thing doesn't apply too much with a one year age gap. Maybe not even a two year. Once the gap grows, much more boundaries of respect are put in place. You're not expected to respect elders simply for their wisdom, though that is a factor, but also simply the fact that they have been alive much longer than you and would thus have experienced much more than you. No matter how intelligent someone may be, you cannot deny that the older someone may be, the more they have likely experienced

      @@serenity3034 Age is a trivial parameter .... And yes! a child can give advice to an adult. Or do you think your parents learned nothing about life while you were growing up? Anyway ... There are young / old wise and young / old idiots ... So yes ... age is not rly a thing ... Unless you are putting a baby and an adult in the comparison example ... which would not even be about being wise or an idiot... because babies are the most special people in the world. I believe people should just respect each other without carrying so much about those old fashion criterias...

      Hi! I'm an artist here and it is all about bone structure. Asian skulls are typically shorter but broader in the face while European skulls are typically longer but narrower in the face and have a more prominent eyebrow bone and cheek bones making the face look "small" compared to some Asian skulls. But because not everyone is 100% pure any race, genes can cause skull shape to differ in some people.

In Korea every month in the 14th is a holiday for couples- valentine’s day, kiss day, Pepero day etc. Most of those days are just meant to be like date days where you do something fun (like five each other the candy pepero) etc. But not everyone even celebrates them. In my culture and country we also have this "respect" type of thing for elders or simply older ppl than us. It just comes naturally. Starting from simply put school, where a first grader would probably let out a sit for for an example 8th or 9th grade. You have to say good day when addressing people 3,4 and more years older than you but you can say hi to ppl the same age or younger. It's not just in Korea it happens in many other cultures, and it's just normal like that we are used to it from a young age.

It's definitely thought throughout our childhood, and since I know my country was under turkey for a long period of time in the past we have a lot of similarities when it comes to the culture despite the difference in religion. I had friends from turkey growing up and they also seemed to have been thought to act the same polite way I was to older ppl etc.

    I don’t know about the small face thing.. like I do not see any different about the various sizes here in Sweden and Korea. Like beauty standards are very high there but so many say that it shouldn’t be like that but still they come up with these comment to each other all the time and make it normalised anyway. It’s kind of annoying. I got the culture shock when I heard about the age respect culture in Korea. I’m Vietnamese so I know that elders like grandma should we really respect but I see many asians think they are better or just have the right to be disrespectful to us younger, just because we say our opinion doesn’t mean we try to be saucy and deserve to get scolded.. sorry for my bad English

    The two things that I found super odd when I lived in Seoul were the small face comments and the questions about my blood type. No one actually explained the blood type thing, so being asked, repeatedly, made me very uncomfortable. I thought they wanted me to donate blood or plasma or something. Another weird thing was how if you complained of stomachache, your Korean friends might suggest (just right there in front of God and everyone) that you should try to go poop. Just very casually, “Oh, maybe you need to poop.” Lol. It’s kind of fascinating how etiquette differs around the world. There are so many things Americans do abroad that can be seen as offensive, and then Americans think certain things abroad are odd/rude as well. You just have to adapt to the local etiquette and be aware so that you don’t offend anyone and/or feel offended by the differences.

    When I became and ARMY and developed an addiction for kdramas the first thing I noticed was the similarities between our cultures. I am from pakistan. I mean when they bow down to greet, I get it it's what we do too and the elder put their hand on out head or shoulders as to say, "stay blessed". Their respect for elders was wow, cuz that not something u see often in foreign dramas and it's something VERY common in pakistan. We can't say no to elders no matter what. When koreans say hyung, unni noona or whatever, we say bhai, appi etc (a lot of words) after names of elder siblings and random people to show respect. We NEVER EVER take names of our parents or their friends or neighbors or anyone older than us. We hardly even call them mrs or mr something, like koreans call ajusshi and stuff we call uncle, aunty, chacha (etc depending on the bond we have.) We sometimes do compliment on head size 😂 although not that often, it's something the old people nitpick on young people 😂 I guess asians are asians 😅

I think beauty is in a set of things that work differently for each person. You can't choose a pattern and think that everyone should be like that. What works for one person will not work for others. Therefore, beauty is something individual. Something that is not so cool in one person, can work very well for another.

    Respecting your elders is a thing in the US, but it gets muddled with the "friends of any age thing". Like, you can argue with your parents, but don't you dare talk back to your grandparents, for example. At the same time, you should respect everyone by dault, but if they say or do anything to lose that respect, regardless of age, then cut them loose.

    I think its not only in Korea its a asian thing to respect elders and i live in india and it so wierd to understand .. if someone is 1 year or even 10 years older than me but my sibling / cousin so i can use many formal words with them. But if someone is like not my sibling / cousin we have to respect them a lot especially if we are meeting for the first time and if we are 1 year younger it still dosn't matter (in india being a year older than anyone doesn't matter alot )who they are we can call them by names but we have to put didi ( older sister) or bhajya ( older brother / brother) . After like kriti didi, gunjan didi, ravi bhaiya etc etc... And namaste is not a way to say hello . Its just a way to show respect we say namaste only to ones like aunties - uncle like that big people between kids or siblings / cousins we can use formal phrase and say hi, hello and stuff but to adults we have to say namaste..

    Americans kind of have honorifics (particularly in the south) but it's much more casual. It's not by year it's just if there is an older man or woman (about a 15 year gap or more) then the younger person calls the older person "ma'am" for women or "sir" for men. And older people, mostly women might call younger people "hun" "sweetie" "dear" or "darlin" though men don't really call other men that it's more often "sport" "slugger" "buddy" "bud" then the younger will still call him "sir"

      I remember going to my friends house who is Hispanic and her mom was so sweet, she was like "hi, hi! You want some food, I'm making cookies! How is your family?" She was so nice haha 😂 I feel like a lot Americans depending on where they are from can be like that too. It just depends.

    6:57 So MBTI is like the Korean version of American Zodiac signs!!! Ex “Omg you should never hangout with her!! she must be crazy since she’s a Scorpio!!” (I’m a Scorpio so don’t get offended if you are too!!🤣🤣🤣)

    the “slang” (which it’s not always) is the most accurate. I just cringe so hard. Like they still use it when it’s outdated and a lot of time they misuse it (well ig that happens here too with the misuse). The MBTI and Blood type things i feel like in korea majority of ppl will be obsessed while here only a group will be and the. others would just go eh and others wouldn’t care at all.

    Meanwhile one professor in the course personality psychology told us that there is no scientific evidence for the MBTI to be of use and that the descriptions are so vague you'll find yourself in every type 😅

      He's right, let's not forget how much people think they know themselves but reality is quite different, answering truthfully to those questions is questionable by default.

    I know my blood type, back in the day in America they used to type babies blood types incase they needed a transfusion if something happened. Medical Science has come a long way and things that back then affected babies don't anymore. They gave me my daughter's blood type, however by the time my sons were born they were no longer doing the blood types. They used to give the blood type on a card with your name and the hospital name that gave it to you where you were born.

    • @Ploiesti2001
      @Ploiesti2001 2 года назад

      There are countries with ID cards which mention the blood type, however, my husband said they no longer look at that info in an emergency, it's too easy to get it wrong and it's very fast to do a blood test on the spot. I presume, that's the reason they no longer give you that card, it can be misplaced or misused.
