The massive timbre change from Christina's speaking voice (light and girly) into this darker weightier singing voice is entirely because she's modifying her singing voice in an unhealthy way to try and create this big impressive sound. It works, sort of, in the middle of her range, but it means she screams and does the yelling thing when she tries and sings higher. You can't do the technique things necessary to go higher when you're doing what she does to create this bigger sound.

I love this song so much. It has helped getting self esteem and self confidence back after removal of a break tumour which left me looking like a figment of my old self. After I added my own stamp on it I was ready to use it as my national anthem.
