REACHING MY LIMITS Motorbike Adventure in Australia’s Victorian High Country

- The Victorian High Country has definitely been on my bucket list to ride for a long time, with its incredible landscapes and picturesque mountains, I knew it was something we had to experience ourselves.
So while we were heading South we decided to visit Bright in the High Country and I can say without a doubt it truly met and exceeded all expectations. But although I loved every moment it wasn’t without some challenges.
Our first ride in the High Country was meant to be an easy ride exploring the area and visiting Mt Beauty, as we had a big ride planned for the next day. But by now I should’ve known that getting lost is always inevitable with us.
After arriving in Bright we decided to go for easy ride to explore the area as we had a big ride planned for the next day. But by now I should’ve known that getting lost is always inevitable with us.
We ended up taking an unplanned short cut on a trail called Tawonga Gap Track that would lead us deep into the mountains where the trails suddenly turned into extremely steep rocky climbs and descents. We unknowingly ended up climbing to 1190m elevation and before we knew it we were in too far to turn back.
Although I was very intimated we had no other choice but to try and make it back home.

Hi Rem, you're better off leaving the engine running while going down hill, use the engine braking in first gear to help slow you down and set your pace, at the moment you're going so slow, it's actually making you more unstable, and making you work harder, which isn't helping your confidence. The bike will actually handle better with a little more speed, trust your bike and yourself. Go find a steep hill and run up and down it until you are comfortable, I'm almost tensing up watching you tense up, relaxing and staying loose will also help a lot .... PS, I think you're a better rider than you give yourself credit for...
Good advice , also locking the rear wheel on and off used to be a good trick back in the day to scrub speed down steep trails ….but yes with engine running .
@@SomewhereInsidelocking the back wheel ! ??😳😳😳
@@notsorare Yes on a two stroke IT200 back in the day , the bikes nowadays are 4 strokes with better engine braking .
We are talking steep declines , in first gear the old two strokes would get away even in first gear , so you locked up the rear wheel and slid down , to reduce speed .
May not work on 4 strokes , but it was effective , we are talking about a lightweight 110kg Yamaha IT 200L, so probably shouldn’t mention it here.
But I believe pro riders do the trick …it takes an experienced rider to pull it off .👍
Turning off the engine is a valid technique. Learned that in the Army ages ago. Works a treat on behemoths like the 1150 BM etc on very steep and slippery muddy downhills. You are right it will be easier to keep the engine running but that will come with practice as Rem gets more experience and confidence and can relax more on the controls. In the mean time turning off the engine when she is intimidated probably helps more then it hinders.
I love how you and your family positively promote some of, if now all of, the best parts of being off-road. Testing yourselves, exploring and affirming each others achievements. You are all good role models for this hobby.
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoy the video!
Nice trails! Your old man is bang on. Always look forward at where you want to be, not down at where you are…. and let the bike do the work. Ride on champions!! 🍺😎
Next time youre down we want to see you ride through Wonnangatta... Adventure bike heaven.
The more downhill you ride, the better you get ;)
We will have to check it out next time! Thanks for the recommendation.
How fun! Great to explore those Aussie Alps. Also, always remember to bring 'accidental overnighter' worth of stuff. A jumper, water, a powerbar.
I applaud you guys for taking on that terrain. Definitely challenging and intimidating but you persevered and conquered it. The fall at the end is testament to how important it is to always carry water and food. The fatigue got the better of you but fortunately it was a minor mishap and nothing major. Those Hondas are proving to be an excellent choice. Ride on!
These videos keep getting better and better! Those tracks were awesome, and very steep.
❗️just some tips on steep dirt trails…
1) pull the ABS fuse under the seat so “you” have total control of your brakes both front and rear, ABS can be dangerous on steep dirt downhills….
2) like you did turning your bike off and coast down but using your gearbox/clutch to control your speed along with your brakes…the motor running creates its own effects making the bike feel like it wants to runaway (gyroscopic effect)…lot of us enduro riders do it
3) your limit is so much more, keep it up.
ps. get a proper knobby tyre on the front
I don't even ride my road bike, especially in Summer without water. EVER. Stand, lean right back, relax your hand grip and engine braking in 1st gear. Mountain biking should help with decent confidence. Good to push yourself. Great video.
Love seeing the family out there together! Keep the bike moving down hill, stay loose and confident and use your engine braking. I am really enjoying watching you guys out there together! Might see if my misses can be inspired by you guys
So glad you’re enjoying the videos! Thanks so much
Nice one team. I suggest some bike rider training to improve your skills and confidence. All the gear and some idea. Training will make you excel and enjoy riding to the max. All the best
CamelBak always take the CamelBak.
Good riding! I ride the VHC on a modded CRF300L, always keep the motor running and use 1st gear on the steep descents. Turn off rear ABS, you'd be surprised how slow the bike will go without stalling. The motor helps the bike maintain traction and there's power there if u need it to get yourself outta trouble. The CRF300 motor is a little tractor. Enjoy !
Great adventure REM you did well, good to see you get out of your comfort zone. Agree you should keep it in 1st gear and let some of the engine to the work for you.
Well done! I am yet to explore the area. Love how you guys do it as a family unit. My wife is dead set again motorcycles. Took me 17 years to convince her to let me ride. Now to try and convince her to let my kids ride 😅
Loved this, Remi! Meeting you recently was such a treat, and watching these videos really helps me on my CRF 300 learning. Absolutely enjoyed seeing you tackle those steep downhills, and it's great to see your mum enjoying the new bike too! 😊
It was great to meet you too! Hoping you’re loving your bike as much as I do. So glad you enjoyed the video. Happy Riding 😊
My favorite adventure riders. Great video. 👍👍👍
Thanks so much, really appreciate your support!
Just goes to show that your limit was further than you thought. Well done team.
Anxiety levels 😂 you be a lot better for what you done in this video
REM every day you get better and better good job.
Thank you!
Great effort to your whole family I grew up in those hills being from near Myrtleford
So I know how daunting they can be
Great effort
Welcome to Victoria. Great video. Yes some steep hills in Vic and more of them and worse ones to do. You have to stand on the pegs for the downhills. Mick
The 300 sound good. Defiantly the right ride for you both, with the suspension & a tad extra power etcetera. Remember to take spells, I get tired and that's when I lose clarity & lose confidence.
You don't have to stand all the time, sitting when you can conserves energy. Down hill, keep the weight as far back as comfortable with your bum only half weighted, ready to let the bike move around under you. Changes a bit if you're a gun pushing it faster, but going too slow is not good either, balance is hard to maintain.
Well done ladies, you mum killed it, great views & enjoyed going along for the ride.
Cheers from north Brissy.
WTF 😳 no water, always, always take water, even if it's only 600mil & a muesli bar or cookies even. 🤕
😂Going too slow & the stall, bound to happen, couldn't have picked a better spot 😊 👍
Takes time to become a great motorcyclist …we never stop learning …by riding and watching better riders and listening .
Totally agree! There’s always something to learn.
Hello miss reminder you are can drink coffee sometime don't drink it regular because it is make cold our body it is very dangerous. You are drink tea mani time it is good for your health. 🙏💕 Thank you for your video🎥.
Good video Rem! 🧗♀️
Your bike sounds awesome
nice ride an always take water with no matter how short the ride is
I'm very keen to try green laning but I have zero training and skills yet to take the plunge. Videos like this really push me on to giving it a go!
Hi REM , mum and dad , I can see you are all starting to really enjoy the ride , you are all starting to experience how much fun you can have , go and have a look at Adam Riemann they were riding around Thailand on the 300s and you’ll see Howard tough these little bikes are after passing through the tide jungle , Anyway, always enjoy the videos. Keep up the good work Cliff from Queensland Australia. I’m in the big island
So enjoy being taken along on your wonderful adventures. Perhaps a motorbike intercom would be great for talking between yourselves and recording while on the move.
constantly showing the beauty of your country! making me absolutely plan a trip over and get a bike there to move around. As for downhill riding I would suggest to keep the bike running and use your engine for braking with the added locking rear wheel every so often for some dragged slowing. and definitely try to not tense. but you are really doing an amazing job pushing yourself and learning! you did fantastic!!
Locking rear wheel? 😱😱
@@notsorare dragging your rear brake and slightly locking your rear isn't always a bad thing. learning to do it controlled of course. not slamming on your rear brake :) it's a balancing act between rolling, engine braking and actual braking. all this of course hopefully with TC off on the rear which i believe is a simple button on the dash on the Rally.
@@Dutch800s loosing traction in any form is bad advice
Most of my riding is in mountainous terrain but I’ve only been riding for 56 years so you do you
@notsorare 30 years of dirt competition, track days, off road courses and normal road touring through Europe and the US, but it's all good. Would have loved to have an actual talk with someone with that amount of experience, but you seem to come with an attitude and maybe having a bad day so I wish you all the best 👍🏻
Thanks for the tip, definitely something to keep in mind on future rides!
Well done. Thats awsome
That was a great video. I get the same anxiety when I'm out of my comfort zone. 😄
Thanks for watching, it can be a real challenge getting over the nerves!
With experience you will eventually come up with better excuses Remy....like the possum that ran out in front of you as you pulled up at camp, giving you such a scare!!! 😎✌
You need to look10 or more feet ahead of your front tire to see where you want to travel. Pick your line not looking down at where you’re at. Always look ahead and your bike will go where you look .
25:08
23:05 hi Rem, the faster you go with momentum, the more stable the bike will become, your doing fine though.
It still amazes me how much people underestimate the VHC.. never trust a gps for navigation planning, I use paper maps you get a much better understanding of the tracks.
I saw you had a fall and broke your leg … T Rex Racing in Dallas TX makes an easy to install very low profile engine guards that would have kept most of the bike weight off you leg if you go down with leg under bike … you can install yourself I have them on my CRF and KLX …. U might check it out
Hello miss reminder where ever you go first drink coffee. Next do yourself. It is good for health. Thank you for your video
Riding double with a kid in front of him - what a hero. I used to take my kids riding just like that - some of our fondest memories. Great video - thanks Rem.
You make it look all too easy,😱
The family that plays together stays together. Cute. How do I get my girls interested in doing this with me? Any tips?
When you are descending the steep hills click it into 1st gear and allow the bike to engine brake this will control the speed of you decent. But otherwise doing well. I have always been a nervous rider while descending hills. I love climbing hills but what goes up must come down. When descending in 1st gear the bike will get no faster than about 30km/h depending on your gearing. You will also find you have better balance at a slightly higher speed.
Hello miss rem you are now take training and learning form your parent best of luck. You are blessed by annai parashakthi. And also your parent blessed by annai parashakthi. Be free and take care about your training during all time.
U don't give yourself enough credit u are improving heaps. Standing up on pegs ,leaning weight up and down hill. Maybe need to practice a few steep hills Evan with tar and try leaving motor on get to fast enough to roll down with motor on and work out that spot were gears take over your braking or slowing your bike down without over braking or using minimal brakes. Keep up the good work bikes seem to be going well with upgrades happy new year to u all
Thanks for the great advice, I'll definitely be practicing!
My wife won't let me go on any sort of ride unless I show her my thermos of cold water before I leave!
I'm guessing you went to Mystic bike park while you were there. Any plans on making some MTB videos for your channel too?
Yes we did, it was awesome. I will definitely be doing some MTB videos in the future as it’s another passion of ours!
Awesome. Can't wait to see those too.
Howcome you take off from a stop in second?
Great video team!
Did mum leave the 450 behind?
Yes, we decided it was a bit too big for her skill levels. She absolutely loves her Honda Rally now definitely a good swap!
Message for Dad... don't take your sandwiches to the restaurant
That poor clutch.... You keep starting in 3rd gear or am i going crazy?
Howdy guys love the vids can you tell me what brand jacket Bruce is wearing Thanks
Glad you enjoyed! He is currently wearing a KTM Jacket from a few years ago, he has done a lot of trips in it!
NEVER ride without water, no matter where you think you're going to ride. Good ride though.
Seriously use the engine! The braking downhill with the engine running is far easier than trying to roll the bike
Letting your bike roll down some of the steeper hill helps you keep better control, going on first gear often encourages your bike to lock the rear wheel which takes the control away from the rider. If you change up a gear and use the brakes and let the clutch out a little will wipe off speed and lock the rear wheel as the engine turns over to restart.
Great video what are you doing for fitness jogging will up your strength and stamina
Riding a mountain bike is better I found, less stress on your joints, great for stamina/cardio, good for balance and similar skills related to riding anything...
Great tracks Rem. Love Bright. Will have to take the 390 over next time and do those tracks. 🤙
for the love of god, go speak to Shane and chris at bmw off-road training, to sort you confidence out. also go get some Cardo/sena comms! having your dad tell you its getting steep or a log across trail etc is valuable. seriously getting painful watching so many basic mistakes for no reason!
