Does Phantom Power Improve Your Condenser Mics Audio?

- WARNING: I no longer recommend using a USB soundcard to connect a microphone to your computer. It has become too unreliable due to manufacturers altering the components used in their products as well as alterations to operating systems causing additional problems. The only method of connecting a microphone to your computer that I recommend is with a USB AUDIO INTERFACE that is designed specifically for that use case.

As another tip, when using USB audio interfaces with some laptops, whether cheap interfaces or nicer ones or USB mixers, some laptops will add a whine to the recording. It has something to do with the way the transformer is handled with the laptop, and it doesn't occur with desktop computers. For those that do experience that issue, unplugging the laptop and running it on battery while recording should solve the issue.
+Sir Nigel Cogs Gaming EVERYONE LIKE THIS COMMENT AND KEEP IT AT THE TOP!!!! Thank you Sir Nigel. Appreciate it.
+Sir Nigel Cogs Gaming But...if my battery is burned? What should I do?
+Zydrex buy a new battery..
Is there any problem if I connect a cheap condenser mic to a phantom power and then connect it directly to my laptop's audio port without using any USB audio interfaces?
Try to ground the laptop, yes this solved issues with my audio
Let me give a little science behind why this works and why it might not work depending on the microphone.
By my best guess, you are using a statically polarized condenser microphone, where the backplate is able to produce a polarization pattern without electricity. By adding external electricity, you are strengthening the polarization, and the signal clarity goes up tremendously, as a result of a better, active polarization on the backplane.
If you were using a condenser microphone that was not statically polarized, you would need phantom power or you would not get any signal from the microphone without the +48V active polarization.
If you were using a dynamic XLR microphone, however, the phantom power would have no effect. A dynamic microphone produces its own electricity, based on the sound pressure from your voice vibrating an always-connected coil hung in a magnetic field, rather than changing capacitance on an existing circuit, as condenser microphones do.
Providing phantom power to a dynamic microphone thankfully doesn't harm it, but it will not help any.
Anybody who wants to try this, hopefully now you know what to look for.
Very concise rundown on microphones and how they work. Nice. Thanks.
I don't mean to be a jerk or someone who just leaves mean comments, but this video is not clear on what phantom power is or how it should be used. I don't feel like writing a long explanation of why, but let me give a quick rundown.
1. Phantom Power is 48 Volts DC power used to power condenser microphones.
2. If your mic is NOT a condenser, phantom power is not required and will usually have no effect (because it has a transformer in it to protect it from phantom power!).
3. If it DOES effect the sound you get out of your mic and it isn't a condenser, it probably doesn't have a transformer and phantom power is damaging your microphone!
@Podcastage: The BM-700 is a condenser, so you're good! I still felt it important to comment and make everyone here aware of what Phantom Power is and how dangerous it can be. There is definitely a lot to learn about phantom power and how it works online, and if anyone wants more information on mic types and how to properly use them, feel free to message me.
+OfficialXeredian Your comment is not negative or mean. It is very constructive and helpful, and I really appreciate it! You are also absolutely right. I have a video scheduled to discuss what Phantom Power is and how it works with microphones. This video was just a response to a quesiton I got over and over again "But can I use it with my nw-700 or bm-700 or BM-800 to make it sound better?"
OfficialXeredian I just want a microphone that plugs into iPhone to record on GarageBand. Why can’t it be that simple?
My sentiments....sort of. Yes the title is misleading. With his cheap usb interface he was powering his mic with 5volts phantom ( all condernser mics need phantom power....some can work with a 1.5 volt AA batterie eg Phillips SBC ME570....AKG C1000S with a 9volt batterie). Phantom Power is USUALLY 48volts as provided on preamps and audio interfaces. The tip being given at the end of the video and in the comments is a good one.
I have a question, so i bought nw-700, but when i record the audio sounds very low. Like i would need to speak louder or get really close so that it wont be so quiet. I use some power thing that it came with and i dont know if thats the problem
just looked at the nw-700.......cheap enough (that may be the problem). Check the voltage on your mic plug with the phantom power "power thing" tuurned on. You should have 48volts from pin 1 and either (don't know which) of the other two pins. Your signal should be loud enough with that mic. Maybe something is set wrong on your sound card or whatever interface your using.
What I like about your videos is that I don't have to waste too much time to get the answers I need. You go straight to the point, straight to comparison, less chitchat in the middle. No uhhh uhmm slow bedroom voice etc.👍
Have you tried using this with V8 soundcard? Can you do a review about BM800 with and without V8 soundcard and with and without phantom too?
Thanks!
you are awesome
You, my friend, are awesome.
Podcastage can I use this mic, with only this USB audio adapter??? I am begginer, youtuber and I think it would be pretty good...

Oh my god, I just found this video to get help with a bm-800 before purchasing and I instantly subscribed. Thanks man, super helpful.
What did you end up buying? Thanks!

@@djcook Thanks, I didnt have 230$ at the time. That's why I was looking at these cheaper ones. I ended up getting the bm-800 and with a little editing in post it's crisp and nice.
Thanks for your help. All of your helpful tips have definitely improved my youtube channel. I've bought so much stuff from your links. I just order the Neewer phantom power supply. Can't wait to get it and test out.
A good SoundCard External with Phantom Power works absolutely fine, all you need is mixing skills on top of that. Keep it coming bro, nice one.
Can you do a video on audio software such as VoiceMeeter (Banana)? I wish to know what you would recommend.
I wonder if future USB evolutions will provide phantom power...
I was seriously just about to request this, thanks Bandrew!
+Nathan Fogle PERFECT! I can now vacate your mind and stop reading your thoughts.
oh. this is 2015. but your video looks modern and ahead of its time
Thank you for running this experiment! It offers me a lot of insight!
Oh, btw, L O V E the hat!
I imagine, if replacing the sabrent adapter with the syba adapter, there won't be much of a difference with the results. So, i might be better off with the adapter, than piling on a phantom power supply.
I had that Gino USB Adapter, two infact. Broke down on me after a few weeks of usage FOR NO REASON. Those things are trash! The first one broke down in 2 days, I asked them for another one and they did. But as you know, it broke down. Would not recommend it for ANYONE.
Anyways, nice video, informational as always. That hat looks amazing on you btw! XD
+Alysha Hana Yeah it definitely does not feel like a quality piece of equipment. I'm definitely sticking with my Sabrent adapters. I hope other people will thumbs up your comment so people know that this GINO adapter is no good! Thanks for the heads up to everyone!
PS: Thank you very much! Haha The hat definitely kept me warm when I was taking pictures in the middle of nowhere at 6 am. =)
Podcastage oH gosh, do u have an instagram? would love to follow u there
Alysha Hana I have an instagram, but I ALWAYS forget to post there. I mainly do that on facebook. My user name on twitter and instagram and everything is BandrewSays ... I think. Haha.
+Alysha Hana yes that one is the adaptor that didnt work for me
Thanks to this video I realized my cheap condenser microphone was a BM 800 and I was recording into my laptop mic, not this cheap one. Yes my microphone came with that useless sound card, but ended up not using because the signal coming out of my BM 800 was too weak to be used. But now I upgraded the microphone with a behringer UM2 interface and the sound is more normal. Now I don't like my cheap mic, but I do want to record with a condense mic. I don't know which one to buy.
Honestly can barely tell besides with that Gino Interface
With the Sabrent didn't really notice
I have already ordered the NW 800 microphone, and I do not want to purchase a phantom power supply. Will the microphone work, albeit quietly, without any usb or phantom power supply interface. I am open to buying a SYBA usb adaptor but I really do not want to invest in a phantom power supply. Somebody please reply soon, the microphone is arriving soon.
Cheers, Ethan.
@M A Thanks for responding, I did end up buying a phantom supply though. Thankyou anyways!
2:45 oof static.... I already see someone playing a game.... that static would be probably even 200% louder xD
Aha, I remember when you had 200 subs and I wouldn't stop hounding you with questions about whether I should get the BM-800 or SF-920 - by the way, I've been using the BM-800 for a couple of weeks now, and I love it! ^w^ Thanks for helping with the decision, once again. Congratulations on the 860 subs! You're growing subs every day, good job. :3
+Cheesy Pizza Thanks so much for still being around! You're awesome and I appreciate the kind words!
What do you use for adapters?
I have a question.
.. for the bm 800, do you NEED phantom power?
Needs ~4.5v to run
Podcastage Would it run at the microphone jack?
no
Thank you very much! For christmas, i'll buy the flourean bm-800 with the neewer phantom power supply.
the pictures in your room are dope. just random. love your videos and your help is invaluable :)
I just picked up an Ohuhu 48V phantom supply to go with my BM800 mic. Works great!
Awesome man! Super happy to hear that you got it all set up. Are you connecting directly to your computers internal soundcard?
+Podcastage I have mine connected to X-fi 7.1 sound card with phantom power
Podcastage Sorry for the late reply, but I'm not sure if it's connected directly to the soundcard. The USB sound card that came with the mic just stopped working though :(
The title should say "electret condenser". An actual condenser microphone REQUIRES phantom power.
Then what about the blue ice consender...
@@swix02 It probably has an internal 5 to 48 voltage converter
leaving out a word isn't hurting anyone
and considering if an actual condenser/capacitor mic requires PP, then you already know what he meant. Nice
Yes, judging from the comments, it is hurting a lot of people. Tons of ignorant responses in the comments due to a misunderstanding from the video
Turning down your preamp settings on your computer is a clue to what's really happening. The phantom power is being used to power a JFET in the microphone capsule that works as its own preamp. Essentially, electret microphones don't need a preamp as it's supplied via a 5 volt bias (which is one reason they became popular in the first place for consumer-grade audio). All the phantom power does is essentially function as a bias voltage. Probably not the most elegant way to do that, too.
You made my day, whatever your real name is! You are funny, with and without your hat! The information was very helpful, since I had ordered the microphone, that had no instructions, but no phantom power, thinking I could still use it directly with my laptop. I am not buying the Sabrent or Gino adapters..found instead the Syba USB adapter. That had more good reviews. Thanks! Wish you were located in my area to come and help me set it all up! lol Question: do you recommend Audacity for simple, audio recording software?
+Catherine-Kay Butler Thank you kindly. Happy to help. And yes I would recommend Audacity. It's a very popular and free software that offers simply functionality. I have never used it, but I know a LOT of people who do use it, and there are a lot of tutorials on it as well.
cheers for the info man, just went ahead and bought myself a bm-700, boom arm, usb sound card, xlr cable and phantom power adapter for $55 AUD! thanks again for answering all the questions i had
I have only asus dgx sound card .. is this will give me good sound?
the sound is so clean though....how come you have zero static/buzz noise? I want to know your secret please
How do i change my input gain?
Google "how to change microphone input volume + your operating system".
I think you need an audio interface to increase the microphone sensitivity but I know you can use software to boost the rest somewhat.
Apparently, and please do correct me if i'm wrong. USB 3.1 or USB C provides 20v of power to whatever is connected. Granted if the dongle can utilize that it would be a much greater increase than USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 at 5v.
The phantom power always creates background noise my lgv30 is able to power the bm-800 with almost no background noise but it drains battery incredibly fast that's the route I would choose if I were someone trying to go on a budget either that or I would pick up a MXL 990 or 770
its not the phantom its the soundcard. the one they give us is poorly made.
how do I tell if my computer has enough voltage to directly run a mic or not, I don't have the original manual
Computers put out 2 to 5 volts to power a condenser mic.
A related issue is how much voltage the mic wants. I got into some detail in a post (didn't want to clog this thread.)

i have a BM-800 Condenser mic and i need your help! When i plug it directly into my PC i have to be really close to the mic (like 5-10cm) so it actually picks up my voice... I know this video was 5 years ago but I found a Phantom Power with USB cable that I can connect it to my PC or USB charger. Do you think it's worth it? Because it will only provide 5V.
Thanks for the comparison. Exactly what I needed. Have a thumb! ...wait...No don't hit pos...!
me too. I was gonna buy a good mic . Now gonna buy a power supply and check with that first
Hey Bandrew (sp?, did I hear that correctly?) Hey brutha, I am new to the industry and trying to create audio content that won't give my listeners a headache. I'm trying to use the NW-700 (BM-700) on a newer Mac. I bought the Sabrent USB adapter and it needs phantom power- obviously. My question is: you referenced an "audio interface that is actually designed for this" yet I did not hear any suggestion (or follow up video of said interface(s)). Do you have such a review? and what is the average cost/benefit of utilizing the proper setup? You seem to imply that it is a bit of an investment.
Love the videos man! Great energy, very entertaining and informative. Keep it up my friend. Thanks in advance.
+W E Unfortunately, I have not been able to invest in a bunch of different interfaces to test out. I just researched enough to find the right one for me whichi is the Zoom H6 (portable recorder and interface) and it's capable of recording up to 6 individual XLR cables. But that's $400 new. You could go with a Scarlett Solo (amzn.to/1ZQKwwg) interface and those are $100.
The reason I said that is I have had a few people get really mad at me when they buy a $3-$5 usb adapter and it doesn't provide audio on par with interfaces and setups that cost $500.
Also, I have received a few comments about this over the past few weeks, so I just ordered a new Sabrent adapter to test that to see if they have changed it some how, ultimately leading to a lower voltage output.
hey bandrew what camera do you use?
+VadeUs I have used the Canon 70D for a few videos, but for the majority of videos, I use the Logitech C920.

I just recommend the Behringer UM2.
***** Unfortunately, these companies altered the construction of the soundcards and those no longer work by themselves. You would also need a phantom power supply. So that means you're looking at about $25-$26, while the UM2 is ~$30.
+Podcastage ... hello tks for tips ... and where is the UM2 for 30 ? - I can't seem to find it even close , tks
thyConstantine At the time of the review it was $30 on amazon. They sold out after the video launched and now it's more expensive.

Phantom power is also around 30 Dollars,So i'm not sure what to get.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
+Legit Ace I am not sure if you have the budget, but you could do the BM-800 & The Xenyx302 USB. You could also use one of the cheaper USB adapters, but you will get some noise. I'm not sure what your budget is. Definitely don't pay $30 for that USB Adapter.

No, this is a terrible video. He doesn't appear to have a clue as to what phantom power is or why you need it. If you have a condenser mic, It won't work at all without phantom power.
And yes, his main mic is very harsh. Sounds like he is using his camera mic.

am i missing something? all condenser mics need phantom power to work, as they use capacitors. are those cheap USB audio adapters proving power to the mics? don’t they only supply at max 5v, rather than the required 48v? also i’ve never seen phantom power being supplied over anything other than an XLR connector (at both ends). if you want to use a condenser mic you need phantom power from a preamp or audio interface. someone correct me if i’m wrong.

+3x5Paradox www.geeksrising.com/podcastage
I really don't hear a difference with phantom power. I think all these mic's really require is 5 volts. I suspect they are back electret capsules, which means they use the standard 5V bias voltage that used to be ubiquitous on PC's and small personal electronics.
I don't understand or know those usb adaptors. but you can only phantom power mics that have been designed to access/run off phantom power. Likewise mics that require phantom power will not run unless you have 2 things..1.) a phantom power supply and 2. a balanced xlr cable. These usb adapters must have circuitry that draws power from the device into which they are plugged..far as I know USB can only draw 5v.. Generally these mics need anywhere 9-48v depending on the design. they seem to be underpowering the mics..and that could lead to damage of the mics..
Some of these mics are Electret Condensers which only require 4.5v
SO the best solution: Neewer NW-800, Neewer Phantom Power and the Gino sound card???
so why do mics need power in the first place and if answered why can't computers give more power ot the mic
bro justa tip try to cut all frequencies in sound in post production before 50 hz and increase the gain level of high end frequencies so the voice will be more clear and not muddy and you will avoid the hiss and nearby noises also the condom of microphone isnt good at pop filtering you should switch to a pop filter so your sound is more cleaner like that,
Hi,sir my mixer is having phantom power power not working problem. If i connect my xlr output from my mixer to the xlr input on the phantom power & then use the output xlr from the phantom power to be able to use my condensor mic will it work sir, thanks🙏
I was literally just thinking about this, great timing.
+FluhffyNick PERFECT! =) Yes! Well I hope it helps! =)
+Podcastage It did, How's that phantom power too ? any buzzing ?
FluhffyNick What do you mean by any buzzing? The box does not buzz. As I mention in the video, it added a slight bit of his when using the Sabrent USB adapter because I only dropped my gain from 7% to 4%. But with the other one, I dropped it from 72% to 35% and there was a HUGE decrease in background nosie.
so what's your regular recording setup - i.e. like in the moments you were not testing the different mic setups but just doing the commentary - the sound level was much higher with almost no background noise etc. I have the BM-800 hooked up to my PC's regular mic input, but the sound level is extremely low, whilst if I boost it, the background noise is terrible. Was wondering if adding phantom power would improve anything, or should I rather think about an active mike preamp. Or is the audio interference coming from the computer internals and investing in such a simple USB audio adapter would improve things? To tell you the truth the audio quality coming from my webcam could be considered superb comparing to this regular mic input audio, however, even though it is free from noise, it lacks dynamics and also picks up keystrokes mouse movements etc.
so just get the GINO and everything will be cool??
Do I need these adapters with phantom power? Cant I just plug a mic to phantom power and then phantom power directly to pc? Will there be any differences?
USB Soundcard and USB Audio Interface both mean the same thing... what are you referring to when you say "USB Soundcard" ?
Thanks dude you helped me find the perfect mic for me for a cheap price I used to plug a aux coard into my phone and use it as my mic you earned a sub
Happy to help
I HATE the white audio adapter when I bought my bm-800 it broke within 30 minutes and made my audio buzz and it was awful I would not recommend EVER using the white audio adapter.
Wao. I'm starting out with the "Slightly better microphone" and I find this very helpful. Liked and subbed
So what are you using to speak into whilst doing your video, because it sounds pretty good.
Intro is camera microphone. Then it's the bm700
Hi, do i need phantom power to use the bm800 to do voice overs on my laptop?
On a slightly related note, I wonder if for microphones that specify a phantom power range (for example 9v-48v), is having 48v as opposed to say, 18v, is going to have any effect. There are some mixers out there that provide less than 48v, as an example.
My gut feeling says no if the microphone in question is well designed, but maybe I can test this for myself when I have the time someday.
Great channel by the way, reviews hit on all of the needed points concisely. Especially the keyboard noise, as I use an extremely loud and pingy keyboard that comes through considerably on my ATM73a. Maybe an arm mounted dynamic mic will do a better, albeit much less convenient job.
If the condenser microphone is worth owning, it will accept a full +48v even if it only requires +9v without causing any damage to it.
Any additional voltage over required operating voltage should not alter the sound.
Hey love your videos man keep up the good work and hope you get more subscribers
Quick question
Can you do a video about voice over or gaming microphones under 20-25$ range thanks
+Jacob Pahomi I did the video "what's the best mic under $30" and provide a mic tht's about 25 and then one that's about $15.
Ok sir, thanks
Thanks man you helped me alot🙏 got you a new subscriber
Made before Sabrent went bad. I really don't wanna dish out money for an audio interface yet. Hopefully the power supply is enough to get the mic sounding nice even with the new Sabrent.
I wish i read the description before ordering my 7.1 steel channel usb sound card.
Thanks for the tips

Confused about something... whats wrong with plugging it directly to your onboard computer soundcard?
why on other videos on RUclips dies it sound like it has loads of noise and it just sounds terrible but on yours it sounds incredible
+Jimmy O'Brien Connect mic with Phantom Power & USB Soundcard. That's why. People probably connecting directly to mic input (which sounds like crap), or they are plugging directly into a crappy USB Soundcard that doesn't provide sufficient voltage.
I will buy the Neewer NW 8000 Mic and the Neewer Phantom Power Supply so I guess it's a nice combo and it should do the job right?
the sabrent and the phatom power is good the gino is the backround noise toooo lound
Yeah, if you add phantom power the sabrent works well.
Bit confused, I think you made a mistake in the description. You've explained the Gino is your least favourite USB audio adapter but in the description you've got (DO NOT BUY) next to the Sabrent.
Anyway, I'm looking to setup a new mic just for gaming. Your videos have been helpful so far! Just wondering, would you recommend a setup like the BM-700 + Sabrent USB adapter over something like the Blue Snowball USB microphone? I'm trying to make a setup that's cheap yet effective, and rather than pay $90+ for the Blue Snowball, figured I'd shop around for some condenser mics.
Cheers mate! Great videos as always.
+MrSheepMoose That is not a mistake. They changed the construction of the soundcard and it no longer provides sufficient voltage to power an electret condeners mic. If you buy either of those SABRENT soundcards you would need to buy a Phantom Power supply as well. The other option is to get the SYBA USB SOUNDCARD which does still work.
+Podcastage Oh okay, I wasn't away Sabrent changed up their USB's. Is this for all of their USB options or just some new ones? I can still find some Sabrent AU-EMAC's for sale and noticed you've used them before. How does the Syba USB Soundcard compare to the Sabrent? Cheers.
MrSheepMoose The Syba & Sabrent sound almost exactly the same. On the PODCASTAGE2 channel, I do reviews of both and they are VERY similar.
Excellent info!
I'm in the same situation where I purchased the Tonor BM700 mic kit and a Sabrent USB soundcard.
I'm using the Audacity program to just test out/record some simple audio. It's so low, I have to be really close to the mic itself to get audio recorded and I have to have it cranked all the way up to 100 full volume
Will the Neewer Phantom Power give a stronger audio sound? Just to need to make sure before I purchase it.
get a proper audio interface in order to achieve best quality, Behringer has the UM2 for 40 Euros and it does the job perfectly
Thanks bro, this stuff was really helpful ❤
I think I dont need a phantom power than I just need a soundcard I think that is the best because there's a ton of thing you can do using sound card..
BTW this is just my opinion.....
BTW GREAT VIDEO LOVE IT HELPS A LOT !!
I don't know what causes this guys but when I use the phantom power on my desktop there is a hissing sound.
i have the same problem. Im pretty sure its the usb adapter, i have that white one and it produces a hissing noise when i record. I think the solution is a usb audio interface. Like a uphoria or behringer or something
i havent bought one.yet though as i am on a budget
I got the UMC404HD on sale for 70 bucks, waiting on some XLR cables to try 2 bm800s with it. Hopefully it sounds pretty good for the price.
I have a feeling that the best mic for home recording purposes is the electret microphone. It is cheap and has a really good performance.
I think that's true also. Electrets are good for home recording and only need an inexpensive USB sound adapter. Add in some mixer VST's in Equalizer APO and you could have a perfectly decent setup for recording the human voice.
Why don’t you ever leave the noise raw by just plugging it into the 3.5 mm
I saw you growing from 100sub keep it up dude your r awesome
+tech technically Thanks so much buddy!
Lifesaver! deeply appreciated! I got a killer Mic and set-up just trying to set up my Kid! Huge Help[! Thanks!
How about pluging the XLR-to-3.5 cable directly to the 3.5 pink mic plug on the motherboard? have you tested that? of course, listing the motherboard model is a must in this case.
Hi i am using the same mic and same white adapter and plug it to my mac. But the adapter light blinking red for 5 seconds and it swtich off. No sound could go through. Could you advice on this? It be a great help
Thanks for the video! Helped me a lot because I had the same question "Do I really need the Phantom power" So I don't really need it, but it improves the quality of the sound. Liked!
Uh, no. This is a horribly misinformed video. If you have a condesner mic, you beed phantom power or it won't work. Period. If you have a dynamic mic, you don't need it at all. This is one of the worst videos I have ever seen
What if we just skip the USB part and plug the 3.5mm into an internal sound card? While also using a phantom power.
Would likely not sound good.
I have a question, I have bm 800 microphone and I ordered phantom power supply, do I also need one of these usb adapters do get better sound?
Yes you likely will.
