I'm 60 years old and I didn't know about this. Thank you for presenting this. 2022 and Jackson's black citizens are still in the crosshairs with polluted water.
I'd be careful with what you mean about "our people". While racism was certainly interwoven in the situation, it should be remembered that the Vietnam era was a clusterfuck for everyone. Im a white dude, and I think there is plenty of common ground to be had here, so I'd like to be included in your definition of "our people".
I vaguely recall Jackson State being mentioned in high school, but ultimately theres limited time to teach kids history, and if we're trying to talk about Vietnam and the anti-war movement a good focal point is Kent State. The shooting at JSU was largely an aftershock of this event so for the purposes of a K-12 education its a bit redundant to go over. And as far as teaching kids about racial strife, sadly this country has a lot of much more severe events, like the Tulsa Massacre, not to mention the race riots that occurred throughout the 20th century (and continue to this day). No ones trying to hide it or anything, its just a relatively obscure event that's more relevant to history buffs then the general public.
As I am reading this tragedy at JSU. It is so similar in many ways to the Orangeburg Massacre. I grew up in Orangeburg and graduated from SCSU. Such racial tragedies at HBCUs need to be known.
This was a great video detailing the events of this tragic 2 days. It almost bothers me though that there are current and past students of Jackson State that knew nothing about this. Jackson State has so much rich history that should be known by anyone even interested in the university. As a past member of Tiger PRIDE, knowing the university's history was MANDATORY! I encourage any student that see this video to do your research and learn the history of the place you call your "Home away from home". It'll truly give you a new respect for the university.
+J. Jeraude Zigler Bert Case said it best, the Jackson State massacre did not get anywhere near the media coverage that the Kent State massacre received. Both were tragic though
As a 56 year old American, today is the first I’ve heard about it, from watching a video on the Vietnam War. I’ve known about Kent State since around the age of 11.
Wonderful video on the history of the university. I have read about the events before but this video and actual clips of the day brings it closer to home. I am still proud to be an alumnus of JSU. Class of 2006
I was born and lived (at least the first eight years) just a few east of the JSU campus. My mother took part in those marches and sit-ins in Jackson...I also remember her telling us about this incident and though she never had the opportunity to it meant the world to have have her children pursue higher education. While at JSU,I took time to read up on this tragic point in our history right there in the library on campus..sure it's been moved around some...just a few thoughts..loved ones!
Forehead-slapping moment -- The names Gibbs and Green at Jackson State University came back to me. This was a horrible incident defined by racism but I know it wasn't covered by the media as heavily as Kent State which is geographically closer to where I lived. I wasn't in college, was not even politically oriented but the turbulent era of Civil Rights, the Vietnam War and the Black Power Movement that I lived through definitely will forever remain with me.

Listening to Burt causes me great consternation!! He’s trying to walk a fine line here.. “I was hit by a piece of glass..” What?!?! Who cares!! They were hit by bullets!!
I think you are missing the point. He was saying that there was no,snipper and that the reason the cops started shotting was because of the bottle thrown, as even he got some glass in his leg from it. So some of the cops got glass in their bodies. Thats why they started shooting, and they just claimed the sniper as a denfence for murder. At least thats the way I hear it.
I said the same thing! You got hit by a piece of glass too. Well they obviously knew it was a bottle, not a gunshot! But they justified this killing by blaming a bottle. 🤦🏾♀️

I was born and raised in jackson. This isn't the only racially charged shooting in jackson by law enforcement. They went at it with the black panther group that was based here on Northside Dr.
High-class wickedness, that's why they don't want to teach the history of this nation. Kids need to learn about attica prison, the happenings in the 50s and 60s and onwards
Just listening to these people words and what they are saying remind me of what my people went thru before I was born and when I was old enough to see it for myself. 1970 I was in high school first year. I really remember when M.L.K. got kill most of the city was on fire. And the country. White peoples wasn’t playing fair. Just like now! We have a thief who thinking he is a bully. He think he just going to take what ever he wants. And some of the people are going for it. And they are to blind to see the other side of the road. It’s empty! They went for the con or dream 💭 You better wake-up and smell the coffee ☕️ with the quickness! If it doesn’t sound, look, or feel right! What in 4 hells make you think it right. Okay school is out. This saddens me. I'm 56yrs old and I've NEVER heard of this incident. The reporter said he didn't understand why the Kent State incident was heavily publicized but the Jackson State incident was not. 🤔. White ignorance is why this country is having the sames if not worse issues over 50yrs later.
I was born in 72 as well in Memphis,TN the city where Dr M.L. King Jr was assassinated. I grew up in Orange Mound a segregated community of Black homeowners. My environment was extremely positive, growing up my cousins and I were very protected and felt safe from outside wickedness such as this. So when I moved to Nashville for college at TSU in 1990 my mindset was very strong, militant, and protective of my own people. Jackson State was a top contender for possible colleges. But the out of state tuition lost to Tennessee State's in state cost. But I've always deeply respected JSU! As a matter of fact, TSU vs JSU football classic will be played tomorrow in Memphis. So I thank my family, neighborhood, and city for raising me properly. Respect to my elders and ancestors for their unyielding perseverance, strength, and courage. Y'all are real life superheroes in my eyes! 🤎🤎
Bert Case one of the reporters present that sad night passed away the other day. His tape recorder proved the injustice, attempted murder, and murder. No justification for this tragedy. Keep pushing JSU look forward to you playing in Memphis against TSU
+Dwayne CHance I'm sorry to hear that. He was a fine reporter. I am grateful for the insight that he provided into these tragic events. May he rest in peace
I was a senior in HS when this incident occurred. There were three campuses on which shootings occurred, Kent State, Jackson State and Columbia State Universities because of protests over the Vietnam war.
We are blessed with the internet today to get this history. We can be the people that document reality for future generations. I’m white but my Dad was from Laurel in Jones County. I feel if some of this news made it all the way to Seattle where we lived my parents would have been shocked and talking about it. After being in many countries during WW2 Dad couldn’t see Jim Crow and live with himself. I still have cousins etc around Laurel. I contacted one when I was researching on Ancestry for our family tree. She was so openly bigoted it took my breath away. I was so glad we moved north and I didn’t have to grow up believing all that.
It's sad that black citizens were made to suffer for being here when their ancestors built this country with their sweat and blood. Who are whites to think that they're better than anyone else. To think that is a sickness. We are all here together. Why waste your time, energy and life with this negative when we can fill our lives with positives of enjoying eachother cultures, helping one another. Just recognizing the beauty in the differences of the people who share this country with us. This country belong to no one. This country is for everyone here, to share.

went to Lambuth College in Jackson 1971. Had good friends, black and white. Whenever I saw a black brother I would say 'what' goin' on honkey? He would say 'what's goin' on , nigga? There was no racism in our group, not tolerated. Also dated a pretty black girl for a time; man, did we turn some heads when out in public. Great memories.
Yes black men have always hated seeing a black woman with a white man but there always cool when it's the other way around. That's racism at it's finest. Now days the call each other the N word but if a white man's does it he is beaten to a inch of his life. Go figure
These are the stories in American history that the opponents of CRT, do not want exposed or discussed. So a teacher in a high school class in FL can talk about Kent state, and vietnam protest, but mentioning Jackson State protest that same teacher could face disciplinary action, or fired. If you think its ok to sit on sidelines, not vote, ignore politics, and dont care who gets elected to local gov., in positions like sheriff, DA, judges, etc, you are sadly mistaken, as you can see we are still fighting these same battles from decades and decades of yesteryear.
As African American female, born and raised in the Northeast, Buffalo,New York, my parents migrated here from Arkansas in 1954, of course once i entered elementary school until graduation in 1979, never were there any classes about African American History that were ever taught, of course this was the Norm throughout the U.S., I began studying everything about my History after high school up until the present, these stories on Social Media, such as this tragic one are extremely informative, nothing has changed, LAW Enforcement is totally out of control, they has known that Killing African Americans

I was born and raised in jackson. This isn't the only racially charged shooting in jackson by law enforcement. They went at it with the black panther group that was based here on Northside Dr.
I graduated from JSU! Never heard about this! ❤️❤️
Watching in 2021. So sad.
2022....speechless not much have changed with cops.
I want to know more of these stories.
Know Your History! JSU Has A Lot of Interesting Facts in ItS PasT tO Be Discovered By Our Generation.
High-class wickedness, that's why they don't want to teach the history of this nation. Kids need to learn about attica prison, the happenings in the 50s and 60s and onwards

HOW I LOVE MY DEAR OLD COLLEGE HOME.
I just hope someone got something out of it.
I WAS ONLY 6 AT THE TIME THIS MY FIRST TIME HEARING ABOUT THIS I WATCHING THE VIDEO RIGHT NOW WOW I'M SO SORRY R.I.P OUR BLACK KINGS WE AS BLACK PEOPLE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH IN ARE LIFE BUT GOD HAVE THE LAST SAY ABOUT EVERYTHING THEY WILL HAVE TOO FACE GOD WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO SAY TO GOD AND IT'S STILL HAPPENING TODAY AND IT'S SO SAD MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AMEN AMEN 🙏❤️🙏😢😢
@@barbarawilliams5378FUNNY, U R A COWARD, PINK JESUS THEIR SAVIOR REALLY DON'T CARE, LOOK AROUND 🤡
Oh he knows YYYY
I'm so sorry this happened at all. I was born 1972 and grew up in low income areas and only can say these idiots were just dumb period!!
Who u referring to as idoits?
I'm talking of those that did the messed up actions towards the students. I would have been an outcast back in those days.
@@DeeJoyceAND WHATS NEW NOW? MISEDUCATION OF THE NEGRO, WHATS NEW? 🤡
It never stops I just don't see no change Dear Lord show another way
Climmie Johnson is my sister. She was shot/ grazed in the head during this riot.
COWARDLY MISEDUCATED NEGROS, 🤡Z
Fascinating! Am grateful to see a thorough documentary about this tragedy.
I was a senior in HS when this incident occurred. There were three campuses on which shootings occurred, Kent State, Jackson State and Columbia State Universities because of protests over the Vietnam war.
does anyone know when this was filmed?
+pablo is dead It has a copyright date of 2012, although it looks like historical footage was compiled with recent interviews.
These kinds of historical events should be taught in schools. America needs to own its history both good and bad!
GOOD AND BAD? 🤡🛑
Very informative Jackson State......from a Gramblinite
Disgraceful!!!!
This is the kinda stuff they want us to forget. They killed Mr Green for absolutely no reason
MILLIONS MORE 🤡🛑
I have seen that Kent state photo 100 times. I have NEVER heard of this story... Really messed with me..
I believe the students more so than the news reporter.
So Bert Case started the shooting on Jackson State
They rarely talk about the shooting at South Carolina State either!!
Them coward cops did this on purpose
It's sad that black citizens were made to suffer for being here when their ancestors built this country with their sweat and blood. Who are whites to think that they're better than anyone else. To think that is a sickness. We are all here together. Why waste your time, energy and life with this negative when we can fill our lives with positives of enjoying eachother cultures, helping one another. Just recognizing the beauty in the differences of the people who share this country with us. This country belong to no one. This country is for everyone here, to share.
A sickness in the mentally unstable, which only believe in taking/controlling, not sharing.
No... u need to. Watch repugnicans...DONT u hear them say: we need to take our country back .. Jan 6: they destroyed capital... NO ARREST?THUMP SAID GO HOME... U SPECIAL...LOVE U... SO WHAT makes u think this yo country too?

I never heard about this!!! This is so sad!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!!
Love Bert. Case and his life long work for the citizens of Jackson
Two words - Lynch Street
'Nuff said
It was named after a Black man who is a Congressman from the 1870s. Look it up
went to Lambuth College in Jackson 1971.
Go figure
@@bubbadump8676 Keep up the good work. We are people and not colours. Man looks at the outside, the LORD looks at the heart.
FUNNY AS HLL, GHETTO GAGGN HUH? WHO CARES, 👿
Never forget!
I am from the UK and I saw the killing at Kent State University but never heard about this one or the Orangeburg Massacre.
Thank you for reminding me
@ Marcus Rodgers, you are so right....
