I'd be careful with what you mean about "our people". While racism was certainly interwoven in the situation, it should be remembered that the Vietnam era was a clusterfuck for everyone. Im a white dude, and I think there is plenty of common ground to be had here, so I'd like to be included in your definition of "our people".

I vaguely recall Jackson State being mentioned in high school, but ultimately theres limited time to teach kids history, and if we're trying to talk about Vietnam and the anti-war movement a good focal point is Kent State. The shooting at JSU was largely an aftershock of this event so for the purposes of a K-12 education its a bit redundant to go over. And as far as teaching kids about racial strife, sadly this country has a lot of much more severe events, like the Tulsa Massacre, not to mention the race riots that occurred throughout the 20th century (and continue to this day). No ones trying to hide it or anything, its just a relatively obscure event that's more relevant to history buffs then the general public.

This was a great video detailing the events of this tragic 2 days. It almost bothers me though that there are current and past students of Jackson State that knew nothing about this. Jackson State has so much rich history that should be known by anyone even interested in the university. As a past member of Tiger PRIDE, knowing the university's history was MANDATORY! I encourage any student that see this video to do your research and learn the history of the place you call your "Home away from home". It'll truly give you a new respect for the university.

This was a horrible incident defined by racism but I know it wasn't covered by the media as heavily as Kent State which is geographically closer to where I lived. I wasn't in college, was not even politically oriented but the turbulent era of Civil Rights, the Vietnam War and the Black Power Movement that I lived through definitely will forever remain with me.

I think you are missing the point. He was saying that there was no,snipper and that the reason the cops started shotting was because of the bottle thrown, as even he got some glass in his leg from it. So some of the cops got glass in their bodies. Thats why they started shooting, and they just claimed the sniper as a denfence for murder. At least thats the way I hear it.

I have seen the marches, protest, sit-ins and the like and not all white people where racist towards us. There were some who stood with us and tried to help us. I watched the movie Mississippi Burning and I couldn't believe that it was based on a true story/events. The atrocities that we faced and endured makes me sad and we're still facing to some degree in 2022. I pray that a change is going to come someday. 😔😔😔

Just listening to these people words and what they are saying remind me of what my people went thru before I was born and when I was old enough to see it for myself. 1970 I was in high school first year. I really remember when M.L.K. got kill most of the city was on fire. And the country. White peoples wasn’t playing fair. Just like now! We have a thief who thinking he is a bully. He think he just going to take what ever he wants. And some of the people are going for it. And they are to blind to see the other side of the road. It’s empty! They went for the con or dream 💭 You better wake-up and smell the coffee ☕️ with the quickness! If it doesn’t sound, look, or feel right! What in 4 hells make you think it right. Okay school is out. I just hope someone got something out of it.

The reporter said he didn't understand why the Kent State incident was heavily publicized but the Jackson State incident was not. 🤔. White ignorance is why this country is having the sames if not worse issues over 50yrs later.

I was born in 72 as well in Memphis,TN the city where Dr M.L. King Jr was assassinated. I grew up in Orange Mound a segregated community of Black homeowners. My environment was extremely positive, growing up my cousins and I were very protected and felt safe from outside wickedness such as this. So when I moved to Nashville for college at TSU in 1990 my mindset was very strong, militant, and protective of my own people. Jackson State was a top contender for possible colleges. But the out of state tuition lost to Tennessee State's in state cost. But I've always deeply respected JSU! As a matter of fact, TSU vs JSU football classic will be played tomorrow in Memphis. So I thank my family, neighborhood, and city for raising me properly. Respect to my elders and ancestors for their unyielding perseverance, strength, and courage. Y'all are real life superheroes in my eyes! 🤎🤎

I’m white but my Dad was from Laurel in Jones County. I feel if some of this news made it all the way to Seattle where we lived my parents would have been shocked and talking about it. After being in many countries during WW2 Dad couldn’t see Jim Crow and live with himself. I still have cousins etc around Laurel. I contacted one when I was researching on Ancestry for our family tree. She was so openly bigoted it took my breath away. I was so glad we moved north and I didn’t have to grow up believing all that.

It's sad that black citizens were made to suffer for being here when their ancestors built this country with their sweat and blood. Who are whites to think that they're better than anyone else. To think that is a sickness. We are all here together. Why waste your time, energy and life with this negative when we can fill our lives with positives of enjoying eachother cultures, helping one another. Just recognizing the beauty in the differences of the people who share this country with us. This country belong to no one. This country is for everyone here, to share.

There was no racism in our group, not tolerated. Also dated a pretty black girl for a time; man, did we turn some heads when out in public. Great memories.

These are the stories in American history that the opponents of CRT, do not want exposed or discussed. So a teacher in a high school class in FL can talk about Kent state, and vietnam protest, but mentioning Jackson State protest that same teacher could face disciplinary action, or fired. If you think its ok to sit on sidelines, not vote, ignore politics, and dont care who gets elected to local gov., in positions like sheriff, DA, judges, etc, you are sadly mistaken, as you can see we are still fighting these same battles from decades and decades of yesteryear.
