Former Northrop Grumman VP Mike Ciminera gave a good presentation on how they created aircraft. Mike said not all of their design teams were not managed by engineers, but by experienced people able to do the job.
That makes sense, because Lee Iacocca was the CEO of Chrysler Corporation was not an engineer, not a designer, but the Ford Mustang and Chrysler Corp. Mini-Van were his ideas.
John Moses Browning the greatest firearms designer of all time that produced dozens of various types of firearms, he did not go to school to learn his craft.
What is important is forming a good concept for design, the form of the aircraft will develop by its required functions, it's called form follows function.
