As a descendant of James Longstreet, I found this discussions interesting. I appreciate the positive historical notes.
Longstreet and Hood- excellent choice and discussion of two extraordinary profiles/tragedies/stories.
These are men who literally gave an “arm” (and one a “leg”) for their cause, and both remain forever debated and hence, at least in my mind, misunderstood.
This debate will be never-ending, and thus my profound bias in their favor (as individuals and as soldiers) will not likely change the minds of those who feel otherwise.
I will simply add here that anyone who choses to mock them as warriors (tactically or strategically), ought to spend an afternoon storming Gaines Mill or taking a bullet in the Wilderness before pointing a finger in judgement :)
PS: oh to be a fly on the wall when Sherman and Hood swapped thoughts at X-mas…

I’m hoping to be back in Franklin for the 160th. I was there for the 150th and on the Ed Bearss battlefield tour.
My grandpa wanted that theme song played at his funeral. The theme song to Kelly's Heros.

Fascinating. Longstreet couldn’t really be criticized for his war fighting (with the exception of the Gettysburg nonsense). He also didn’t have the level of independent command where criticism can arise.
Hood on the other hand has significant defeats on his resume. Is his generalship in his losses overemphasized due to the “lost cause” rhetoric, or is it just he had independent command where he could be blamed for specific defeats? Were his losses more a result of facing overwhelming odds? Or can he rightly be blamed for Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville and his supposed aggressiveness.
I have always thought he was to blame but this talk makes me wonder what I might be missing.
As always, you guys are so thoughtful and fascinating with regard to the topics addressed.

As always, great job gentlemen. And Mr. Ricci - congratulations on the new arrival all the best to the Ricci family. I just finished Varon's Longstreet book and found it an excellent study especially on the post Civil War years. Old Pete certainly wasn't shy about expressing his opinions and that along with his actions certainly made him the scapegoat of Early and the Lost Causers. And Eric, interesting hypothetical about what Cleburne might have done had he lived. Given his proposal to use slaves as soldiers and the fact he was not an Army of Northern Virginia guy he might have taken a similar road like Longstreet. Hope to get down to Franklin at least for the 160th if not before.

Hood is a textbook example of someone who ended up getting promoted above his level of competence. He was an excellent brigadier and excellent division commander. Once he commanded corps and armies ... ehhhhh, not so much...
John Bell Hood had arguably the best combat soldiers in the Confederacy..... He may not have been the best " Commander" but he created the best soldiers in the entire Confederacy.

Longstreet became "hated" in the South because Longstreet became a Republican, then he took "the loyalty oath" to The Union, and to top it off-Longstreet became a Catholic. Three things Jubal Early could not abide.
