    Regarding slave revolts in Dark Elf society - in “Total War: Warhammer” lore there is a tribe of orcs and goblins that actually does stage a successful revolt on land. They establish a minor faction known as Broken Chainz.
    So, not all slave revolts are doomed to failure.

    The dark elves have the most bizarre society of all, it's seems even more alien than the northern humans that worship chaos. It's a miracle how they keep themselves alive and don't self destruct.

    • @BVargas78
      @BVargas78 6 лет назад +27

      With the Chaos Dwarves it's more an aesthetic, in the way that regular dwarves have a norse/scandinavian aesthethic, albiet an advanced and civilised one, as opposed to the norscans who have a more savage version of it.
      I think overall the dark elves are very much their own thing, based on what would happen if Tolkien elves ever became evil. That said Assyrians did have a certain amount in common to the dark elves. War and slavery were big things, as was projecting power through monuments and ritual. It was a society that abhorred weakness.

    Fun fact: Male Dark Elves are forbidden from learning magic, with a notable exception of the Doomfire Warlocks (cause they're cursed to have their souls devoured by She Who Thirsts unless they offer substitute souls). Why does Malekith forbid this. Mainly due to the Prophecy of Demise which reads as follows.
    "And lo, he shall rule with a dark hand and his shadow shall touch upon every land. Steel will be his skin and fire will be his blood, in hatred will he conquer all before him. No blade forged of Man, Dwarf or Elf shall endure him fear. Though will it come to pass that the firstborn son of noble blood shall rise to power. The child will be learned in the darkest arts and he will raise an army of terrible beasts. Thus will the Dark King fall, slain by neither blade nor arrow but by a sorcerous power of darkest magic and so shall his body be consumed in the flames and for all eternity burn."
    The Prophecy of Demise

    • @PigeonCrash
      @PigeonCrash 4 года назад +6

      @@michealfiles166 They canned fantasy due to comparatively low sales numbers on the miniature game. And it was entirely their own fault too.
      They made the rules for the last edition of warhammer so that large games would be more popular, and huge units(needing a ton of models) were the best options for most armies. On top of this they made one of the most unbalanced editions of the game ever.
      So people disliked playing 8th edition, and the cost of starting the game was through the roof so they didn't get many new players to sell models to.
      The CEO who was in charge when this happened also made the end times and AoS, but has since then left games workshop. So right now more competent people are pouring a ton of effort into AoS.
      As a result AoS is actually a pretty good tabletop wargame(and the setting is getting better), but it makes me sad to think that they could have fixed fantasy before shit-canning it.

      @mon-keightears3980 5 лет назад +30

      cardboard box They’re extremely vicious even without a sword and shield. You can’t bribe/strike fear in them, they’re literally have the minds of machines. They were made for only one purpose, and enslaving them is difficult because all a Sarus will do is try to bite your face off, even if you whip him. I think the closest thing you could enslave safely is a skink... but not sure if they’re even worth the trouble since they’re tiny.

    • @Kalenz1234
      @Kalenz1234 5 лет назад +9

      It should be straight up impossible to enslave a saurian. They would die in defiance before they follow orders of another faction. A slann would likely cooperate while trying to come up with a plan to escape. Not sure about skinks. They are more intelligent and have more of a free will than saurians so it me be possible to break their will and enslave them.

    • @angry_zergling
      @angry_zergling 4 года назад +8

      Yeah...even though I'm a bit new to Warhammer Fantasy lore, from what I understand of Lizardmen I just can't picture one being enslaved. They'd wear their paws to stumps trying to claw from their cells, would chew off their own hands and feet to slip out of shackles, would chomp at bars of steel past the point they no longer had any fangs left, and they would take ANY opportunity they could to kill one of their captors. It wouldn't eat and eventually die of starvation, too. And as for doing work? Absolutely not. Even if you went and said you could get around all those other issues, it would not cooperate. Ever. You can't break and cow a Lizardman. Their minds work in a way totally unique from the way every other sentient species does; they don't really have a concept of individual identity and even though they are aware and intelligent, they're not quite *self*-aware, so there's nothing you can do as far as harming the *self* via torture or other methods. Torture needs to trigger a 'selfish' instinct; being tortured to the point you're willing to 'sell out' and possibly hurt your species by aiding your own enemy if it means the torture will stop. Torture would never bring them to making that self-centric conclusion. If you really wanted to have a Lizardman of your own, you'd basically have to put it in a straight-jacket and throw it in a corner and occasionally force-feed it. It'd still probably find a way to escape, kill itself, die of starvation/thirst/asphyxiation, or kill you, but at least you'd have a lizardman of your very own for a few weeks.

    It seems to never be explained how the dark elves changed so much.
    Those guys were high elves and proud and honourable warriors. Then they need forced labour cause none of them knows how to grow a tomato and they suddenly all become sadistic slavers who torture for fun and have a significant lack of common decency.
    Games Workshop should have made their lore more sophisticated. Let them use forced labour for their industry, which makes some dark elves go the extra step and just practice outright slavery. Morathi would influence the culture with her cults but for the most part the former Nagarythi lords would look at those cults and practises at least with scepticism and at most with disdain.
    But a few sour apples spoil the bunch. The dark elves could have the same reputation as they do now but actually it is just Morathi with her cults and a few dark elven lords loyal to her that practice cruel slavery and sadism, while most druchii are very similar to the asur and may use forced labour of prisoners of war to stay competitive but want nothing to do with torture.

      Well said. It's similar on Elder scrolls online, the dunmer dark elves are more fleshed out in lore and society. Not all the dark elves houses of morrowind practice slavery. I wish they did the same on warhammer for the dark elves. They didn't have to make the dark elves all completely evil sadist pricks. It's a shame cause I love the dark elves faction the most.

      So in Gotrek&Felix Giantslayer we got some POV chapters of Teclis. When he fights he noticed a darker cruel side of him. He even starts to laugh during a fight and enjoys the power he wields. He envys Tyrion for his perfect body and fighting skills (Teclis is deformed from birth but magic items helped him). So there is an other site of elves. The Drucci arnt genetical different, but the cruel and violent society which Malekith builds to support is reign appeals to another site of the elven nature. So its culture what made the Drucci that way. Alith Anar is a (descendant?) prince of Nargarythe but his family opposed Malekith.

Some I didnt know and sounds true enough, all and all a good video I think, that said though at some point in the video you mention the most common raids are to Ulthuan and as far as I know that is not so. I belive I read it in the 1st malus book that while High elves are a good price their constant patrols around the island make it hard to raid there and its almost a suicide run unless they go in full force which is very rare (malus has to pay the raiders a lot of coin to convince them to go to ulthuan for those reasons).
