Taraki’s speech at 1:41 - “In the name of God the all-graceful, the all-merciful. I congratulate my fellow countrymen, gallant soldiers, my Pashtoon and Baluch brothers and the workers of Asia, Africa, Europe and America on the first birthday of Saur Revolution. The Saur Revolution is not limited to the workers and soldiers of Afghanistan. It is the revolution of the workers and oppressed masses of whole world. This revolution, which was carried out by armed soldiers under the leadership of Khalq Party, is a great success and a victory for the workers all over the world. The great October Revolution of 1917 shook the whole world. That revolution is a source of guidance and inspiration for our revolution, which once again has begun to shake the planet.”

I was there, sitting not far from Amin and Taraki and right behind some men from the Soviet embassy. I dropped my lensecover on their heads several times. It was an impressing parade. East Germany had donated enormous amounts of red cloth. I have lots of photos and a sound recording as well. Who would have thought at that time what was to become of poor Afghanistan. Everything seemed so promising.

Would be glad to but I think i will save them for my book. Photos and experiences from five study visits to Afghanistan starting in 1970. Especially the Kunduz province and the Spinzar factory. But also all the rest, Buzkashi in Kabul on the king's birthday, Bamian were I stood on the head of the Buddha, fantastic greek paintings on the rock above, Band i Amir, all the nothern provinces and people, people and much much more. Concentrating on the bright prospects of Afghanistan in those seemingly happy years. But there was severe starvation in 1971 and that triggered unrest as well as the king's refusal to sign the act on allowing political parties. There is much to tell.

Interesting. You have truly been blessed with seeing some moments of history in the making. And I am now waiting for your book.
I suppose you do have a great load of photos of these ancient Greek paintings and all you mentioned ? Every time I hear about the Bamian Buddha, I think
of how it stood there for so long, and if only..(sigh)
I really do hope that after youre successfully ready with your book, and when it has been printed, sold, and soforth. Maybe then some of your footage, and images and photos of yours could also be seen here, and elsewhere.
Among other things It would be of great interest to me to hear more of what the East-Germans & Co were doing over there at the time.
And as you have probably noticed already, some serious interest in the history of Afghanistan and the region has arisen, and is re-emerging among a whole new generation.
      Among those who have mostly
happened to hear of the land only in a context of these much more recent wars and horrors displayed in the news, and maybe in some movies.

Thank you very much for your comment. The burden of writing a book or rather to publish a book with comments of some of my very many photos from Afghanistan is heavy. You have to consider so many opinions and ponder on thoughts of what is the rigth thing to publish. At that time is was not so complicated.

    So who were KhalQ's ??
1- It was KhalQi party, who organised a military coupe in 1978 against the president Dawood Khan....
2- Taraki ( the KhalQi leader) signed the document allowing soviet troops to enter Afg in 1979.
3- The same KhalQi leader Taraki was neo-nationalist.... so were most of them.......
4- Later, KhalQi leader( Hafizullah Amin ) killed other KhalQi leader ( Taraki ), just for power...
5- Then in 1988 the khalQi general organised a failed codetta ( Tanay ), betrayed Dr Najibullah, who made him minister of defence ...
He then run to Pakistan and later came back with Taliban....
Most of people believe that Tanay's coupe led to later destruction and demoralisation of the army, ending up with ISI appointees take over the country...
People also believe that Tanay was and still is the ISI agent, he was behind the murder of the last president of Democratic Republic of Afghanistan Dr Najibullah...
90% of KhalQi's were military people, who had no civil or political education...
These are few factual information regarding KhalQi's...

It was a good time and a terrible time. I was young at the time 7th grade and we would be given flags to shout hoorah. I enjoyed it but things changed when people started dying and disappearing, people were not allowed to practice their religion, informants would falsely accuse people of lack of loyalty to the government. Sometimes things start really well but later lack of proper leadership and adequate control of certain instigators results in terrible end.

Yeah but to be honest, it's Taraki's fault. He was just too brutal to opposition and religious people in the countryside, and he enforced his unpopular land reform law. Had he not been so extreme there wouldn't have been a rebellion in the countryside, which wouldn't have led to chaos and the Soviet occupation and creation of mujahideen, and all the shit that happened after. Afghanistan could've been a nice functional country under communism if it wasn't for Taraki (and later Amin) being so hard on opposition.

hassan khan taraki was a Marxist. Marxism advocates for the removal of religion from the state. Which is what he did when he made afghanistan into a country governed under state atheism. Why would he be Muslim if he implemented state atheism. Religion is also not compatible with Marxism. He may have been raised under Islamic influence but that doesn’t mean he actually grew up to be a practicing or believing Muslim.

I don't know, what Nur Mohammad did. Surely this looks so bright for some of you,but this is daily propaganda and the daily grind wasn't beautiful for most afghans at this time.
The communists depressed muslims later and they took land from owners with the argument, the owners can not care for whole land.
Afghanistan is an islamic state and we need a peaceful islamic progressive Afghanistan.
