    I use black socks for erasers. We store the dry erase marker in the sock. The kids love to put them on their hands to erase. I’ve had the same set for years. I wash and dry them throughout the year. They hold up so well.

    I used baby/ small child socks from Dollar Tree for student erasers. My 5th graders loved them. They put the sock on their hands and erased their boards. I washed them a few times throughout the year and during the summer. They lasted for years.

    Hi, I'm from Australia and I love watching your videos. So great that your school gives you a budget for your class. Schools here also do that. I thought I would comment about the playdough. You mentioned you will use it during the first week of school and I wasn't sure what you do with it after. My daughters OT recommends playdough as a great tool for children to use to strengthen their handwriting muscles. Just an idea, maybe you could add playdough to your indoor recess options, or your soft start morning activity options. The children will be playing while also strengthening those muscles. You could maybe add with it playdough number/letter/shape mats.

    I teach first grade and the kids use socks as whiteboard erasers! I did it out of desperation the first time because the kids were losing or destroying their erasers and I had a bunch of clean socks with no partner at home so I cut those up and brought them in! The next year I bought a pack of kids blacks socks, cut them into thirds, and that was their “eraser sock”. We call them eraser socks and the kids always think it’s funny that they’re using a sock! You can even wash them at the end of the year. They are small so they can get lost or thrown away during a desk clean up but by cutting them into thirds I had extra. I would usually give them another but if they kept losing them or there were no more they used a Kleenex or their hand.

    For most of the years I taught, we were not able to come in during the summer at all. We would have 1-2 days of classroom setup mixed with PD in the days right before kids came back. We almost always moved physical classrooms each year AND had to fully pack up our stuff (some of which would be missing when we returned.) It was a terrible way to start a school year. :(

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  3 месяца назад

      That is SO hard and not fair at all!! We don't get paid to come in over summer, but I choose to do so for a few days because it eases the back to school mayhem of getting it all done. I am sorry for that added stress!!

    • @megansanders3411
      @megansanders3411 3 месяца назад +1

      Same! Summer camps are in many of our classrooms right up until we head back for in-service and then those days are so full of meetings and PD that we have little time to set up. We also don't get out class lists until a few days before school starts, so we can't label kid's stuff ahead of time. School starts the day after Labor Day, so sadly, most of us teachers end up spending the holiday laboring in our rooms.

      The number posters were something I made for the SJT Math Club (I can try to get those as a free file soon).
      And the rocking chair was a purchase last year that I love! : amzn.to/3Sq3KMi

      Last year I used some previously-owned ones from Really Good Stuff and sooo many of them ripped from the weight of things being inside. I was disappointed with the quality. These ones are from Aussie Pouch - a brand I had used back when I taught in Vegas about a decade ago and I know from first-hand experience that these hold up well! They're expensive, but worth it to me!

      Thank you! I actually really like Fundations. It has some things that I think could be improved (less marking, less time spent on some skills, more word building and chaining, more phonemic awareness to not need a supplemental PA program, etc.), but LARGELY it is a great, science of reading aligned program!

      We do all whole group learning on the rug! At our tables we are only doing independent work so they won't need to turn around for anything! We keep our whiteboards and Fundations magnet boards in our chair pockets for easy access!

    What will you be using instead of Fundations?

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  3 месяца назад

      We are piloting two literacy programs this Fall: HMH Into Reading and EL Education. We are not 100% sure yet if we will only do the knowledge portion of EL Education (in that case, we would keep Fundations for the meantime) or if we are doing both their skills and knowledge block. After the pilot, we will choose one to adopt. If we choose HMH, we will no longer be using Fundations anymore and if we choose EL, we will have to see if we will still use it for our phonics block! SO much to decide this upcoming year!
