Worm castings(raise your own it's not hard. Adds beneficial microlife and feeds soil), Build-A-Soil Craft Blend(premium dry blend of 15 organic amendments), sowing a cover crop with straw mulch on top( as cover crop grows simply cut it back and let it naturally decompose. The worms and soil life will break it down and feed the soil)
I’m using the same fertilizer plan and products your using. I’ve been very successful. I’m in a facebook gardening group in my area and the general consensus is that it was a terrible year. Not for me. This was my best year and I believe it’s because I follow your advice. So big thanks. As for the nature safe products, I don’t think people have a hard time finding them, it’s just the hard time of swallowing the sticker price of shipping😂😂😂.
I started using Agrothrive because of this channel.. both the general purpose and fruit n flower… adding the Hoss micro… Plants react so fast, it’s amazing.. I thinned some down to 1/4 rate and watered in some potash 0-0-48 on my 3” carrot tops.. man they went nuts!
I also have the philosophy of feeding the soil. My go to fertilizers are fish fertilizer Espoma plant tone (or any other organic granular but plant tone is the easiest to find in large bags.) Before planting, I amend the soil with compost and granular fertilizer. If I'm growing greens I will also add in blood meal. Fish fertilizer as it grows and matures. If it's a heavy feeder, I side dress with granular 1-2x through the growing season.
Travis, I heard from your neighbor that he saw some LSU fella's sneaking around looking for that lucky Dawg's bucket. Keep the lucky bucket safe!!!!! Go Dawgs!!!!
Travis, I tried finding Nature safe fertilizer locally but I couldn't so I use garden tone 3-4-4 that I buy in 36 pound bags. I also use organic alfalfa pellets which costs a couple dollars more than the regular ones, but I don't want to have the chance of introducing amidacloprid herbicides into my garden beds. I did that once before with horse manure. I sometimes use Jack's classic (J.R. Peter's) 20-20-20 in a pump sprayer to foliar feed when plants seem stalled. I've never seen any other fertilizer act so quickly and make the plants happier than that stuff does. To my way of thinking if I'm only using it as a foliar spray I'm not negatively affecting my soil. Two tablespoons of that feeds all my plants. It's very economical and it works like a charm. That liquid fertilizer you use is expensive. Maybe when I run out of the 20-20-20 I'll try it. I tried their free samples but that wasn't really enough for me to be able to tell how well it works. 🌻🥦

The broccoli and peas seem unharmed. We're trying to expand our growing areas but have battled significant pest pressure this year and trying to keep everything organic. Since all my gardening consists of raise beds and five gallon buckets, I pretty much use liquid fertilizer. My go to is Agrothrive and fish emulsion. In the raised beds I use Nature’s Safe. For general purposes I use 8-5-5 at planting. For heavy feeders I use 13-0-0 at planting. I’m trying to grow Brussel Sprouts in a five gallon bucket. It’s been a slow and hard process. Travis, once they get big enough, I’m gonna try your advice and crop some of the bottom leaves. I’ll let you know if I notice any difference.
We love Brussels Sprouts! I've tried growing them, but I've never actually gotten the sprouts. It's all good, though because we also love the leaves. I am experimenting with growing different vegetables and overwintering onions this winter here in Tennessee zone 6b.
Travis, I have appreciated all your videos. You have vastly improved my gardening experience. I do have a question, and hope you will receive this through the old video. Can you touch on Grazon Contamination? Last year I used 2year old Horse Manure from a farm. My tomatoe plants were going awesome till they hit the manure (some over 5ft tall in May(Zone 7B Pulaski TN) and started to cup & fist at growing tips. Went to the Ag Center to test soil, found grazon contaminants. When a farmer uses sourced hay and straw to feed livestock, this grazon can stay in their manure for up to 10years. No Night shade plants can handle it. Legumes, corn etc can, as Grazon is a type of weed treatment for hay fields. Figured you are much more educated on this topic than myself and would enjoy a video with your thoughts. My understanding is u grow corn or beans in these contaminated areas until grazon has dissipated. SOme gardeners have no idea about this product and would hate for someone to go through what I did last year. Remove 6 4x12 raised beds soils, clean and burn areas that were contaminated, crushed charcoal to neutralize, replaced all soil with new mushroom compost. Was not fun
I’ve been doing about the same with fertz as you with good success in central va also. Next year I’m going to add mycorrhiza at the time of starting seeds indoors and at transplant. I have pretty good clay soil and my research suggests plants really will benefit. Having some trouble sometimes starting trees after transplant and looking forward to trying some soluble treatments to young trees next year too to see if they benefit. Ordered some Azera to try too. Those lady bug look alikes wiped out my field peas something else.
Love your simplication on the fertilizers. I too use the organic granular 5-5-5 , 5-8-4 Happy Frog products. I also use organic granular 12-0-0 and 16-0-0 .Also use the Agrothrive 3-3-2 .Feeding broccoli, kale, cabbage and onions currently. I'm in North Georgia and having a little cooler temps than you. You're a couple of hours or so south of me.
I like to throw some minerals , azomite or dolomite based on a soil test way back . I don’t think I’ve seen you any minerals. Also I occasionally top dress with my home compost which is pretty nutritious and has added char. Also I use blood for my N and bone for P . Plus I brew a compost tea once in while which uses added fish emulsion. Yet I think my 5 5 5 organic chicken pellets is my constant go to fertilizer it’s always near and on hand. All in all I feel like the soil has gotten better each year by putting the organic fert in and feeding the soil. I really appreciate that you use organics but let people decide what works best for them! . My broc heads were the biggest yet and my Brussels also seem to be off to a good start this year. I use pretty much the same 3 fertilizers, and they have worked pretty well. However! Now that I have a Dawgs bucket I expect I'll have even greater success
Man, this weather has been all up in our business in South Louisiana for weeks, now. Even the Old Timers have been struggling with all this rain and wind.
AWESOME INFO! thank you- you give absolute pertinent information and we are so appreciative of your time and knowledge and your willingness to share both. Can you give us an idea of frequency of applications of these fertilizers? Not sure if that is different with synthetic VS organic feedings? Also do you no longer find need for micronutrients fertilization?
The Agrothrive we use is full of micronutrients, so no real need to supplement more micros. As far as frequency, we'll usually apply Agrothrive 1-2 times throughout the life of a plant, about 3-4 weeks apart. And then for the nitrogen-hungry crops, we'll usually side dress them at least once, but sometimes twice. Just depends on how green they're looking.
Travis, Enjoyed your video, one thing to mention on fertilizers for the garden, get a soil test so you purchase what you need. Waiting for my UNH Agri Extension for my soil test results for next spring. Are you planning on have soil test done to compare no-till to tilled some time ? Nice looking plants so far. All the best from Southern N.H.
Enjoyed your video. I have not been successful growing Brussels in 7B. I did read that you should trim leaves. That didn't help mine. The ones I got were so bitter that they were ineatable.

Rank beginner back and front yard gardener for 20 yrs, still everything to learn....keep thinking your side dressing a bit too far from the row, will the roots extend that far?
My man great new vid man they look so dang good! You mentioned "only had to spray that Azera one time" and I watched that poison video lol looking back at the calendar how much do you attribute the caterpillar/pest issue going away due to WEATHER vs. the poison? I sprayed my last round of BT in mid Sept. here in central FLAWDUH and haven't seen a caterpillar since mid November when it started to cool off SOME. I know ya'll have had wayyy colder weather there so is it the poison or the weather Travis?🤙🇺🇸🙏
I haven't ever noticed my caterpillar pressure to decrease throughout the winter due to the cold. In past years we'll have pressure throughout the winter.
I tried to grow the dagon brussel.... but im in a perpetual summer in Costa Rica and its kinda impossible but it was good eatin like a mustard green lol
Travis, what was the stuff you treated your broccoli plants with for pest damage? Also, can you cut and come again with Napa cabbage...asking for a friend? Thanks!
Have you ever experimented with 5-2 humic acid and kelp? It's supposed to help with general stress and especially heat stress, and we have very similar climates/zones. Just curious if you've ever given it a shot. If it works it might make the indeterminates push through some summer heat
Brussel sprouts is something I haven't grown yet, but am going to try it soon. Been doing some research and I've seen where Charles Dowding is a big believer in trimming the leaves from the bottom up often. As he harvests, he trims more. many months later his plants look like small trees. Check out this video. The brussel sprouts are just before the 21 minute mark. ruclips.net/video/CfMfnCxiHos/видео.html
I only use organic fertilizer in my garden and always point people in that direction for vegetables not to put myself on a pedestal but to give good information I do use synthetic fertilizer for flower pots but for anything in ground only organic
Hey Travis i have a question about carrots. The tops look good an strong but i noticed a few leaves here and there are turning almost white. Is that from a lack of nutrients or is that a pest or disease problem? I planted them in october.
I don't ever have any pest or disease issues with carrots, but that's not to say it can't happen. My guess is that it's either too much water or a lack of nutrients.
I believe he has a video that addresses that question....maybe check his home page and search for it. He's the best gardening teacher of all, isn't he?!!!!
We get seeds from several different places. I like Harris Seeds and Johnny's Seeds for the higher-end varieties and MiGardener for the basic stuff. But there are other companies we'll use as well if they have something we want to try.
@@LazyDogFarm Thanks for the information. I purchase from Hoss Tools a lot but also view others like Johnny seeds&Baker Creek but haven't made a purchase from those two yet.
Citrus are unique as they basically survive on: nitrogen and Ironite. I guess they also need temps that are not freezing and I'm having to cover ours probably for the next few weeks at least.
Travis my broccoli and cauliflower has some damage from the cold weather we had a little while ago. Is there anything I can do to make sure they keep growing and produce a crop.
I try to use organic fertilizers, but I will use a synthetic if I need a quick feed. I believe my chicken coop compost was to high in nitrogen and I ended up with all plant and no fruit this year. I hope to adjust that for next year ..
Y the liquid organics are bio available but the solids need time to breakdown. I’ve found that overtime they do build the soil up, but it won’t happen overnight
Saw your stunted corn video pls read Inverted day/night temps and nights too warm stunt and halt crops My tomatoes and okra stopped producing and growing entire season after 2 nights warmer than the days with warm nights that week AND it was cool days of only 78-83F with a couple nights warmer than the surrounding days. - horticulturist NW GA Watch for the warm nights Also worms are completely gone past 2 yrs and no fly larvae in garbage cans all summer Good luck
Thanks for the comment. Turns out it wasn't stunted at all. That particular variety doesn't get very tall. Thankfully, we ended up getting really good production from that plot.
@@LazyDogFarm good to hear. My Peach n cream came up short too years back so it’s the cultivar. I love your videos…I’ll leave the above topic alone now. thank you for the reply
I agree with your fertilizers but sometime after heavy rains the soil may get leached of Potassium, so I will broadcast that over entire garden area once or twice a year. Garden looks great. them big cabbage may want a little more room.
I put those Megaton cabbages on a 2' spacing, giving them an extra foot compared to the 1' spacing I usually do. But you're right, it does look a little crowded in that row.
Y’all want to use organic fertilizer that’s fine but I want you to know that because of conventional fertilizers poor third world countries are able to feed their citizens. Sri Lanka government recently forced their farmers to 100 percent organic causing years of lower crop yields which eventually caused riots in cities and government officials escaping the country. Just saying. 😅
If you've seen Hollis and Nancy's channel, did you see them grow walla walla onions??? I think they're in Jacksonville. How is that possible? They are intermediate onions I believe. You actually said that you can't grow them this far south. So I never even considered it. I asked them to tell me their secret lol but they haven't responded. Any ideas?
I didn't see them growing those onions. You could grow them down here, but the timing might not be ideal for a big bulb. But I guess if they did it, it's certainly possible.

Guaranteed to have success with a Dawgs bucket! lol
thank you for the infor I need this
You're very welcome Karen!
I love your videos. Great information all the time.
Thanks Linda!
Great information 🙂
Thanks Carolyn!
If you want even better production you should get a Gator bucket for keeping your stuff in
Been a rough week for the Gators. As much as I dislike them, that's tough news for any program to deal with.
Man, this weather has been all up in our business in South Louisiana for weeks, now. Even the Old Timers have been struggling with all this rain and wind.
We haven't gotten much of it. These storms seem to "peter out" and push north a little before they get to us.
Roll Tide!!!
Tide not gonna be rolling into the playoff this year. lol
@@LazyDogFarm thank you!
Wow posting a vid from just a day ago. You go boy
Sometimes I get behind schedule and have to rally. lol
Yeah I'll probably do another soil test on every plot early next year.
@@LazyDogFarm Travis, thank you for the reply !
Enjoyed your video. I have not been successful growing Brussels in 7B. I did read that you should trim leaves. That didn't help mine. The ones I got were so bitter that they were ineatable.
14:00 BALANCED GRANULAR, BALANCED LIQUID, AND A HEAVY/ DOMINANT NITROGEN FERTILIZER ( HE USED GRANULAR)
Nitrogen can come from farm animal bedding and manure
Rank beginner back and front yard gardener for 20 yrs, still everything to learn....keep thinking your side dressing a bit too far from the row, will the roots extend that far?
The feeder roots will extend out farther than you think.
At this point I use mainly synthetic fertilizers. I use a 10-10-10 at planting and also side dressing.
How are the purple peas doing
They're doing okay. Need them to kick it up a notch though to get them producing before late November.
Thank You Travis! How are your compost bins doing these days? Cheers, Chuck in Jensen Beach.
Pretty well. Got one bin that's pretty much finished. Probably gonna use some on my raised beds when some space opens up.
I tried to grow the dagon brussel.... but im in a perpetual summer in Costa Rica and its kinda impossible but it was good eatin like a mustard green lol
Pruning every other plant within a row may give you more a more accurate comparison of pruning vs. not pruning. It removes a lot of the variables.
True.
Travis, what was the stuff you treated your broccoli plants with for pest damage? Also, can you cut and come again with Napa cabbage...asking for a friend? Thanks!
It's called Azera. I've never tried doing that with cabbage. I wouldn't cut it as much as I'd just get the outer leaves on the Napa.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you! I appreciate your time and the info without judgement. I think my friends Napa might just make it (hehehe).
Love your videos very informative. Where do you purchase most of your seeds for your garden?
1 Neem seed meal, 2 crab meal, 3 kelp meal. In equal parts. =Complete organic nutrients.
Travis my broccoli and cauliflower has some damage from the cold weather we had a little while ago. Is there anything I can do to make sure they keep growing and produce a crop.
A little damage on the leaves shouldn't hurt much. Just be sure you protect or harvest the heads if you get freezing temps while those are forming.
@@LazyDogFarm Ok thanks, no heads yet. The plants need to grow more. Going to keep applying Agrothrive to give them a good boost.
Can’t find nature safe on Amazon, but great tips.
Any advice on slugs n bunnies?
Our dogs and cats seem to keep the bunnies away. This stuff organic stuff for the slugs: amzn.to/3I4zC4M
Hi Travis,
How much agrothrive do you put in your fertigator ?
My filter clogged up every time.
I find mixing with hot water helps
Usually about 10 oz or so. I do have to clean the filter before and after injecting it.
Do you think that leaving the brussel leaves under the plants will bring in pests?
I don't think so. I've done that many times with collards and kale in the past and it didn't seem to create any issues.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you, I appreciate the input
Does Nature Safe ship? There isn't an organic distributor within three states of me.
They don't ship themselves. They have a few dealers that do. 7 Springs Farm online is one of them.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you
I have eaten the broccoli leaves cooked up like collard greens.
# no till # seed experimenting. ??
My Brussels get tall, but I get no or only tiny sprouts. Zone 5b
I've always blamed our lack of sprout production on the fact that it doesn't get cold enough down here. Maybe that's not the case.
This year a groundhog decided to 'prune' my Brussels ugh! We relocated her needless to say
Aphids normally get my baselsprolts.
Aphids can do some serious damage, but they're usually pretty easy to control with organic sprays.
If you don’t want the leaves on the plants touching the ground why place the cut leaves up the plants?
I try to use organic fertilizers, but I will use a synthetic if I need a quick feed. I believe my chicken coop compost was to high in nitrogen and I ended up with all plant and no fruit this year. I hope to adjust that for next year ..
Y the liquid organics are bio available but the solids need time to breakdown. I’ve found that overtime they do build the soil up, but it won’t happen overnight
Saw your stunted corn video pls read
Inverted day/night temps and nights too warm stunt and halt crops
My tomatoes and okra stopped producing and growing entire season after 2 nights warmer than the days with warm nights that week
AND it was cool days of only 78-83F with a couple nights warmer than the surrounding days.
- horticulturist NW GA
Watch for the warm nights
Also worms are completely gone past 2 yrs and no fly larvae in garbage cans all summer
Good luck
@@LazyDogFarm Wow, they are huge.
Can't find nature safe do you order from who
We get most of ours locally from a big fertilizer distributor. 7 Springs Farm online has it, but the shipping is a bear.
I'm not against working hard, but I'm against working hard pointlessly.
Im cutting down most. Im growing in fall and expanding peas and brassicas a lot. Carrots. What the heck do u feed them in fall??? Organics do NOthing
