A big benefit/factor in my choice was also NOISE. Oberhasli are the quietest, Nubians the noisiest. I am training some of my taller females to pack, along with some wethers. Nice to have milk/pack less food while in the bush.
Yes! I have 2. They are my packers but they still make it a challenge to put their pack on. I have to literally put them in the stanchion, or tie them down to a tree. Ive even use the trainer packs from young age. They still hate it. Once its on they get over it.
Love seeing videos like this. We have been goat packing for 12 years. Some other thoughts, horned goats vs dehorned or naturally polled goats? Personality is a big one for us and how bonded are they. Some breeds do better with water crossings and high heat environments. See you at the Rendy?
Hey good morning I enjoyed watching your video! I raise goats as well mine are registered outpine dairy goats I love them! One day I want to do the packing thing as well!! Right now just enjoying other people doing it and learning all I can while I grow my ranch!

The only disappointment I see here is u did not show or tell the valuabality and sustainability of taking goats in milk and the importance of using them for your food in your journeys.
I’ve got 8 month old toggenberg bergs they are going bush with me no problem. I’m a bit concerned they may not get tall enough.
The trade off between males and females. Yes males are generally bigger and pack more pounds for winter survival and hiking. But the trade off with females is that they produce milk. If you pick a female your food and water supply can be smaller. But with a male you can carry a little more. Win win in my mind.

Breed: Alpine or Lamancha or a cross of the two. The Ober color is hard to pass up though. NO long eared goats. Boers and Nubians are for the most part lazy, stubborn and stupid. Size. But not the size most new people are searching for. 200 is the absolute idea size. As a pack goat breeder, I explain it this way to people. Compare a heavyweight vs a light heavy weight. And this is for all sports. A lesser weight, more agile athlete will always out perform and out last a heavier one. Compare if you will, Shaq to Kobe. If you put to much weight on a frame, that frame will break down much quicker over time. This isnt to say to choose a smaller goat. A 250 lbs goat will still perform but as thats a little on the large size for the standard/normal goat frame. Getting that goat into athlete shape will most likely see that goat same goat at 215 lbs.

@@victorygarden556Because boer and nubians are the common long eared breeds. Nubians are noisy and boer are short and fat.
