The funniest part of Black Knight is that there is this heavy moral ambiguity about Sonic's decisions to kill Arthur, and the reactions Gawain and Percival have to being defeated, along with Merlina's end goal to sink the kingdom into eternal nightmare so it will last forever and the only response being "Things have to end or there is no point to living." A very dark game in narrative. Juxtaposed to the 3.5 ft blue hedgehog eating chili dogs, moving at impossible speeds, and wielding a talking sword.
I miss when Sega would embrace how ridiculous it is and wouldn't shy from stepping away from cartoonish basis with their stories every once in a while.
Sonic's edgy phase started with the soft reboot and ended with Black Knight (the franchise itself became edgy with Shadow the Hedgehog, but Sonic wasn't edgy yet), as shown with how the next batch were celebration titles (Generations) or just insanely colorful (Colors, Lost World). Or just weird (Forces). Frontiers is, let's hope, a stable trend waiting to happen. We'll see how Sega manages the next batch of 3D Sonic games 2026 onwards.
This is why I think Black Knight has the best Sonic characterisation. He doesn’t care about Hero or Villain labels, he’s doing what he believes is right, even if that makes him the villain in his opponent’s eyes.
He is only “bad” in their world’s standards. For them, you can’t fight the king. Even if he is evil, releasing demons, tormenting his citizens, etc. But Sonic isn’t from that world. He is from an Earth that’s like ours. And we usually consider people who fight tyrants to be the hero. Besides, Sonic was worthy of wielding Caliburn and Excalibur. And the Lady of the Lake considers him to be a true knight, and in Arthurian legend, she is a figure of authority on the arts of chivalry. I guess Sonic is only bad according to law. But most superheroes are. Like Spider-Man. Still, Sonic doesn’t really care if everyone considers him the bad guy. He does what feels right for him.

Sure, the world and its inhabitants will be eternal, but now there are underworld knights and monsters everywhere. The world is full of cursed magic. It’s like the Blood Moon in Zelda. Except that now it applies to both people and monsters. I have played Shadow of War, where the main character is immortal, and fights the never-ending evil of Mordor. It’s not great.

The original With Me is definitely an underrated and underappreciated song, and this cover 100% does it justice. I appreciate it mostly for two things: 1. One of the few themes sung by a female vocalist (it’s minor, but in a series dominated by male-vocalist themes, it’s a nice change of pace) 2. This song can be taken from either perspective of Merlina or Sonic.

So, about a year ago, an animator (Graphy) made a ludicrously great animation for Sonic singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, and soon after released an AI-altered version of the song so it properly sounded like Sonic. I remember that, in the comments of that video, Graphy said they'd tried to find someone to collab with, but that it was hard to find someone who could manage to not just voice act like Sonic, but also SING like him. Like, for many VAs, those were two different realms entirely. What I'm saying, who in the world would have guessed that Jhett would be the exception we were looking for? Like, godDANG, he fits well. (Ahh, but let's not forget to credit Izzi here either. Her Merlina singing voice us also amazing out if nowhere.)
Well, about singing and dubling... Professionals standards in some time would make these two things be the expected from a VA. These days, is more common you don't have these two things together, and is alright... But, never, ever, I would expect a Voice Acter, professional or not, to sing in Sonic voice and sound's good... Man, this right here is pure talent, one that many people don't have... Is the type of shit you put in a curriculum, don't matter the work you are trying for. Trying to became a nurse? There’s a reason for that. From Merlina’s perspective, sonic is the villain of her story. Because sonic would intentionally doom the world to ruin and fall apart instead of Merlina getting her way and keeping the way the kingdom is forever. Sonic is her villain.
