Agreed. Played when Astroneer was back in early days. Stopped playing when snails were introduced, since changed pc and lost progress, started playing again recently, and found the furnance like on first broken platform. The entire game has broken balance with trains and galastropods, but that's my personal opinion.
Exactly, the Calidor snail, for example, makes portable oxygen generator basically useless, because of how easier it is to feed it once in 30 mins instead of using another slot for small rtg or small gen
during a scrapathon event some year(s) ago I scapped uneeded parts of my base and I thought to myself, how much scrap does dynamite produce? techically all of it, especially when it catches your store of hydrazene nearby.
with how fast the large/medium storage container outputs, you only need 16 maximum to get rid of the furnace bottleneck. just 16 of these little things can smelt faster than you can pull from a single storage container.
Agreed the portable smelting furnace is great,let’s do some quick math 5u/s and it takes 15 seconds to smelt a resource that means it takes 75Us for one resource for the normal smelter, now the portable smelter only takes 2u/s which means it takes only 30Us way more efficient
Thanks for your feedback. I have tried to attach it to the silos but didn't quite work, I then used a proxy repeater but the smelters were too close to each other 😅 I'm not quite sure why attaching the pin to the silo didn't work
@KuyaGameAstroneer its been a while since i messed around with the automation logic in astroneer, but IIRC if you actually slot the repeater into the silo rather than just pinning it, it should work. I have used that in the past as a master on/off switch for generator silos.

Can confirm you occasionally get them from LTE; have gotten at least 3 once you get past the required amount needed for the current LTE and you just keep sending scrap (8th May 2023)
The fixed furnace smelts only 1 resource at a time and consumes 5U/s to smelt 1 resource at full speed, while the playable furnace consumes 2U/s to also smelt one resource at full speed. It depends on which point of view you take it 😊🚀
the only problem is that they can be used on storage pillars, which can be fit on a small platform, therefore if you use them in a 2small 1medium platform b, Things get complicated as the item smelted can get dragged on the opposite side of the platform, rending useless some machines. BUUUUT, i need to check if i've found a fix to this. you might wanna use another portable smelter to store resources as a smelted resource can't get dragged into a smelter. (example imagine scrap to iron with the trading platform, the iron get's dragged on the opposite side of the platform jamming the production chain)

A smelting furnace(SF) has to take 4 time longer to smelt four items, compared to the portable furnace(PF). SF uses 5p/s, and smelt each ore in 15 seconds. So that is 5p/s × 15s × 4. That comes to 300 power to smelt four ores in the SF. The portable furnace uses two power, and when using four, it would only take 15seconds. So we need to do is 2p/s × 15 seconds × 4 (for the amount of PF) and we get 120 power. The PF smelt so much more, takes up less space and uses so much less power. You would need 10 PF to match the power output of a SF, and they would still be faster.
Can I tell you something so me and my friend got a bunch of him then we bought a bunch of these small portable furnaces. We had 48 medium storages full of them. We could smelt things so fast.
I think a good way to rebalance the portable furnaces is to just make them use 3 units instead of 2, and make them like 5 to 10% slower, not so slow the normal furnaces is way faster but not so quick that the normal furnaces becomes completely useless the second you find a portable one, and upping the power usage means those giant trees of furnaces become a bit more late game, I'd honestly love to mod the game to try out some rebalancing ideas for some of the items in the game
i use regular furnaces and portable ones in my power grid. do yall think that using tappers providing organic that gets refined into carbon and then shoved into medium storage containers that then output the carbon into medium generators is a scuffed or valid way of power generation?

You won't probably need it, unless you are trying to build something huge, then you need to smelt fast otherwise it will take forever to get 50 pieces of ceramic or aluminum

I dont think the new things are OP, they have different Places in your Situation, the smelting furnace Is for players that alredy have good Energy and storage, and they have a lot of resources to smelt, and the portable one Is for players that doesnt have to much Energy, or doesnt have too much resources to smelt EDIT: the smelting furnace looks better

lets be real, portable furnace doesn't break the game, its just convienient once you find one. A portable soil centrifuge however, that would be the holy grail item if you were speedrunning 100%

It all depends on how you play the game. Don't use the snails. Don't use the qt. Don't use tethers, or the soil centrifuge, or the science lab ... if you want to make the game more difficult. The game is playable in many ways. Some are more free, others are more challenging. Pick your way to play, use what items fit your goals, and enjoy.

Trains? Snails I agre becouse you can just dig down with one of then and not die. Becouse you are immune to fall damage
trains are fun, they perfectly fit with my usual tactic of digging a straight tunnel down to the core

How does it take more power??? The furnace is 5U/s and the portable furnace is 2U/s, so it takes less power

Yeah sadly the game really lost it's balance over time. They just added so much weird stuff and the game doesn't feel the same anymore.
It has a different balance, I don't think that has ruined the game, it's just a little quicker to get to the endgame.
