I'm team umbrella. I think mine saved my sanity on my previous hike. It wasn't too windy that day, but the rain was coming down pretty good. Made the day bearable.
The Senchi combined with a wind shell is an awesome combination. I'm usually cold natured and don't even bring a puffy anymore. I've been on trips where it was in the upper 20s (F) in the mornings and been quite warm with those two items.
Hey Kriz! Excited to see if you can get a through hike out of the Pad-Pal! You have a pretty early version of the motor control board inside it, so let me know if you have any issues with it and I can get you a replacement to one of your resupplies. :)
Great gear! Didn’t carry a shovel. Never had a problem finding a stick to dig a hole with. So important to treat the cloths with permethrin. I like that little funnel thingy to help get water. Loved having an umbrella. Even used it as I hiked in a tropical storm with no issue.
Carefully chosen gears and 13Lb base weight, well done! Umbrella, I do also carry all the time. HAWK showed the use of it on rainy day inside of tent to keep splashes off while the bottom of tent door is rolled up slightly using two clothes pins to minimize condensation.
Looks like a great kit! Exciting that you're finally doing the thru hike! Been a long time coming. Good luck on the AT, John, hope you have a great time. : )
Thanks Gijs! It’s taken a long time to tweak and gain confidence in the setup. Will be interesting to see how it evolves along the way. It’s going to be a fun adventure. 🤓
Oh a couple more things. I have the nylaflume bags for inside the pack. They are so noisy especially early in the morning finding stuff and repacking, in fact other hikers got upset at me about the noise. Now I just keep my extra clothes in a garbage bag and my sleeping bag in a waterproof compression sack so it takes up less room in my pack. I have a zpacks arc haul, I love it but I find it so uncomfortable to wear. There is the AT THRU HIKER dude that makes these awesome utility fanny packs that you actually thread your backpack hip belt right through it. It is so helpful, especially at water stops or firemaking or pooping I keep those things right in there along with my headlamp and snacks, this way I am never fishing through my pack orctaking my pack off to get to things I need while hiking and it allows you one maybe 2 less bags. I will give you the link in a different comment.
I gave up on the umbrella for hiking. It's just too annoying. 🤣 Also, have you considered ditching the wind jacket and just using your rain jacket as a wind jacket? 🤔
For poop I always just use a digging stick to dig a hole big enough for my fist/wrist to fit in. Is there anything else i would need a shovel for on trail that cant be done with a digging stick?
So to double check You do prefer to have all of the following? Wind shell Alpha Fleece Top And a Puffy? I too have put all 3 in and was wondering if I should drop the puffy and sub it with the combo of the alpha and the windshell Thanks
Yes, I absolutely carry and use all three. When it is 20F outside, sitting still at camp, you need the puffy. When hiking, the puffy is far too hot, even if 20F outside. My recent hikes I had temp swings from 60F to 23F across just a few days. I also carry a rain shell, which I also used in combo with the other layers.
@KrizAkoni it's a whole thing with the Life Water bottles... kind of like Jeep. We all wave to each other, and if you got smart water or something else... then the rad ones keep walking.

Anything to save my sanity! Thanks for commenting! 👊

Wow, no puffy! I’ve dropped the dedicated fleece but have not considered dropping the puffy. Need to look at that North of the Smokies…
I think you got it dialed in. You've had plenty of practice. Some premier gear right there. A few items I'm certainly jealous of. Good luck.
Right back at ya! You have a pretty sweet gear collection yourself 😎

Thanks! So far, working great!

Ah, a vote for the umbrella! ☔️ The ticks are crazy right now…
Oh fark! I was excited to see what you were taking, and it isn't up to watch yet! 😆
🤣🤣🤣

Interesting configuration! Great idea.
Excellent gear choices! I do love the idea of an orange pack cover for hunting season- genius! 😁 Picaradin is wonderful. 👊
Thanks IceBear! Especially in PA I run into a lot of hunting activity

Hey John Nice load out!
Thanks Johnny Mac! 👍
Very excited for you! This has been a long time in the making! We wish you luck sir!
Thank you so much! It’s getting so close now…

I have thought about that - will see how things go as time goes on…
Great kit! Thanks very much.
Thank you CheeseCake!

Most find the shovel easier than the stick. I got tired of finding sticks to dig holes with.

@KrizAkoni thanks
You gave the weight of the Smartwater bottle & the Dasani bottle, but how many grams is a Perrier bottle?
That may deserve its own video! 😂
For Patreon members only! 😆
🤣🤣🤣
I used to go with Life Water bottles just to be an outsider....
Never actually weighed them tho 🤷♂️🤦♂️
You rebel!

Now I have FOMO… 😂
@@KrizAkoni NO FOMO 😂🤦♂️
I like using old army surplus canteens
When you rattled off the weights of the actual water battles I decided I was no longer worthy! So excited for your hike! 🙌
🤣🤣 YOU are worthy! 🥰
