How To Bring A Garden To Life: Planting, Pruning & Harvesting (Garden Tour & Tips)

  • This week I've made the most of the bright, dry days and got out into the garden! I took a little tour of the space and got stuck into planting a few bits. The garden here is absolutely incredible - the previous tenants were landscape gardeners, so it’s full of charm and potential, but it definitely needs a little TLC after going slightly wild before the move. I’m taking it slow, just keeping things maintained for now and seeing what surprises come up. The box hedge has been hit hard by caterpillars, but after a good spray, there are signs of life - fingers crossed it fully recovers.
Over in the kitchen garden, things are thriving! I’ve been harvesting apples (and yes, there’s obviously been apple cake!) and planting some of my favourite herbs like thyme and bay. It’s such a joy to have fresh produce right outside the door, and I’m excited to see it all come together. There’s so much going on, from deadheading roses to making sure everything gets watered - and the view alone makes it all worth it.
I’ll be sharing loads more out here over the next few months, so be sure to watch my Friday vlogs for all the garden updates and a glimpse into how things are evolving.
    Love, Charlie

Our Box got attacked by caterpillars and was absolutely decimated. I thought I’d have to dig it all out. However, having done absolutely nothing to it I was amazed to see it greening up and growing well. So don’t despair, yours might do the same. Lovely garden Charlie!

Chooks, apple trees, roses, conifer hedges and washing in the wind all so beautiful, what a magnificent property . Lemon thyme under the bays would pretty and helps keep in the moisture. ❤

How lovely to see the chickens roaming around freely in the garden at the beginning of your video, Charlie!
Also I am very pleased as my Trinity eyeshadows. Thanks for taking us to the Trinny London store opening last week. Super quick delivery in Australia, it only took a couple of days as she has a local distributor!

Lovely garden Charlie; thank you for the tour. It really does look peaceful there. You are looking much more relaxed now the move is complete.xx

What a beautiful garden, so peaceful! I agree it's best to wait a year and see what happens rather than rip things out now and regret it. The previous tenants designed the garden beautifully and I am sure you will maintain it and improve it further. Love the roses - we don't have as many roses as I would like in our garden because the deers just love eating them! X

We had the exact same with our gardens. People in our village still speak to how stunning our gardens were with a previous resident, but it was neglected for a while and when we moved in the weeds were 10ft high and had totally masked what lay beneath. We paid several gardeners to help revive it but that was a disaster. So we just let it be for 2 years and the past 3 years more and more of it's original structure and beauty has shown itself again. Worth the wait for sure! 💗

The rose hips are stunning, Charlie. You are right. They will look fantastic in Christmas arrangements.

I completely agree with those who have told you to take the time to watch the garden and see what happens throughout the first year. Once, I inherited an amazing garden with a rental property I was in at the time. It was fantastic to watch all the different surprises emerge throughout the year. Also, it made it very easy (and economically friendly) to add to/take away the next year. You really have a beautiful space to work with, Charlie. I look forward to seeing it transform in the coming months.

Hi Charlie. Thank you for giving us a guided tour around your cottage garden . Give your box hedges a handful of fish, blood and bone meal and water it in. We moved from a large house to a cottage 19 years ago and absolutely love it.. It's easier to maintain and really cosy in the winter months. Health to enjoy . ❤

The way I keep our apples is wrap them individually in newspaper and get a few of the plastic containers garden centres get their pot plants delivered in. One Apple 🍎 in each space. Stack the trays on top of each other and they keep for at least a year. I store them in the garage as the shed is too cold in the winter as we are in the North of Scotland.

Lovely to have the garden tour, I find being outside in the garden is so restful even though mine is nowhere near as pretty but just there close to nature delightful. I have tried to store apples like you did in the past but seem to lose them so I now freeze useful size packs either as apple sauce or slices ready for other cooking projects. Apple cake is a great standby too. Love to use things in season but great to have apples in the freezer.😊

I have a question for Charlie. For the AGA can you cook food that has been frozen say a cassarole of some kind that was made previously then frozen how or which oven would you use to do it? Is it even possible do Agas only let you cook from fresh? Sending you love i am still pretty young but your such an inspiration for me. One day I hope to have my own Aga cooker here in the US❤

Only watched for a few moments and I don’t wish to be negative but please be careful using water from a hose, they hold bacteria 🧫 and can be dangerous.
I will continue watching now ❤

Thank you, I take the hose off and use straight from the tap 😊
