I can't believe how lucky I am that Tommy Emanuel will come into my living room any time I click a button, and patiently show me the way guitar is supposed to be played. Besides being the obvious musical genius he is, he must be a kind and generous person. Thanks Tommy

OH how very smart and clever. All he says is a good musician can make a cheap instrument sound good. It takes a lot of willful ignorance to hear that and assume it means a good musician shouldn't use a good instrument.
"All he says is a good musician can make a cheap instrument sound good." Not if the action is 3 times as high as he's used to, with 2 gauges bigger strings and a hump at the heel. Ask yourself why you never see pros playing crap guitars and you'll understand something. They can distinguish good from bad from great and if someone else can't, that isn't their problem.

This is very true. Perfect example is Mark Knopfler. You can have the same equipment and guitar that Mark uses, but you won't be able to get the same tone!
So true. Years ago Steve Goodman played a show at our college. After the show he dropped into the local bar. I was lucky enough to be there. The bartender asked him to play a tune and he said he didn't have a guitar. Bartender gave him an old beat up Kay (remember those?). He made it sing! A great player can make any crappy box sound good while a bad player can make a $6000 Martin sound like junk.
I Love Tommy. He is a Phenomenal Guitar player and probably an even better person, but I wish he's let me "Set-Up" his guitars-action, so his Strings Don't Buzz. That Buzzing would drive me Crazy.
Bang on again Tommy. Tone. No more so than the late great Roy Buchannan who pulled more tone out of a beat up Telecaster with nothing more than a bit of reverb and a ripped amp speaker. Didn't even keep it in a case!
well, I'm a classical guitarist and I've been trying to learn this inspiring style like Tommy, new to me but right hand is really different in many ways, thumb works differently moreover he uses a thumbpick (which is completely creepy to get used to when it's new..) and after many months of practice you cannot get exactly the same punchy tone only with nail thumb ( it could be OK but a bit too thin)... although maybe my years of classical training gave me strength and independence to each finger that could make it easier, I had to adapt to many new aspects like anchoring down the hand all the time which you would only do for some rare occasions (like pizzicato etc...) on the classical repertoire. Nails are a bit of a problem on steel strings aswell (they get fragile and tend to sound thin and trebly on those strings) Tommy don't have any, although it's a big important part of work/time you'd dedicate to when you're into classical. And I'm not gonna mention the left hand with really important thumb trechnique to fret bass notes which is quite prohibited when you learn classical guitar except for really rare occasions if you're confirmed level (pieces that requires really big strecth ...)
@@julkitan3017 A late comment, but i wanted to ask, I heard some classical guitarists actually don't play with nails. I watch Brandon Acker which is a very skilled classical guitar and any historical guitar player, he said that back centuries ago there are also a lot of classical guitarists that don't use nails, says they could get superior tone without nails, then Brandon cut his and play without it, he still plays without nails until today. How uncommon is it for classical guitarists to play without nails?
Yes-you can be happy Tommy-i believe you worked ot the kinks and are getting a great tone! You are right of course about an expensive instrument in the hands of a novice, and vice-versa. I really like your sound-and Chet Atkins, merle Travis and Doc Watson, Jerry Reed-all greats-you are right there- a true master.
Hey Tommy (top name btw, from a Tom to a Tom ;) when are you doing a down under tour again? Can't wait for you to play in Perth again mate! especially so now I know that you also are into alot of the country picking guys I've grown to love! all the best mate!

I would say don't record yourself at least not on some shitty recording device. For example your phone will distort the noise and will sound awful to what you really sound like.
Jacob Frank Get real, man. People used to record themselves on cassette tapes, back in the day. The point is, if you want to improve just record yourself so you can hear how shitty you actually sound to other people. Then, once you sound halfway decent your can post it like this guy (who also killed it on a Wallmart guitar) in another post: ruclips.net/video/XpZJQPivEWs/видео.html. I' m pretty sure he recorded that on his phone, by the way...
all im saying is that if you play a open E string its going to sound better irl then off your phone. You could make an argument that you could record you actually using techniques and bends and seeing if your bends are in tune
I think the tone is also in a good guitar, not only fingers. Its just like that. If not... We would all play 100 dollar crap chinese guitars. If a guitar is crap, its just like this, no fingers will help.
"You don't need an expensive guitar" Sure, that's why none of his guitars is under $3000. My guitar is $100 and it's a piece of shit, it sounds super dull, its action is super high and it does not tune well.

The song is "Baby's Coming Home" by Jerry Reed. :)

My dad always told me its the man behind the guitar that makes it sound good.
He's playing, it's sound great and then you realize he still has the Feedback Buster in the soundhole. Imagine what it sounds like without! :)
Tommy plays beautiful
Truly one of the worlds greats. Having said that; NO TOMMY you can't play my guitar. Get away you'll scratch the hell out of it.
hahahaha
He's extremely generous with his knowledge
Thanks Tommy.... You are the Man!!!
Thank you for the reproof. I can fix some things about my playing.
His hand is hardware that is fully supported by his brilliant mind as software. We all have the same hardware but no software like his.
Both our software and hardware can be developed, just as Tommy has done all his life.

I think people should learn bit of classical guitar techniques, especially when it comes to right hand techniques. There are a lot of overlaps.
Nope, that is different technique. You must learn on type of instrument that you gonna play.

Mr. Tommy, what kind of wood is your guitar made of, and what strings do you put on it? Surely these things make a difference, right?
anyone knew the song title that he played?

That is really really funny to me and how true! I'm going to use that line whenever it can give the most impact. Used very sparingly and with meaning.
that thumb piece looks a little tight on his thumb. looks like it could turn blue
I wonder if he ever considered a 7 string guitar. I got a Gipsy 7 string and cannot put it down.
what song did he play?

Croaktime blues Albert Croak ..see it on youtube

It's "Baby's Coming Home", written by Jerry Reed.
His style and tone seems to devour expensive guitars...
I can play my electric guitar in my apartment through my amplifier and turn it up to 10 and hit and A chord and it's really really really loud
Ha ha ha tune up boys!
Tommy emmanuel kigwa
He talk his guitar is expensive
Tip number 1 - you have to be Tommy Emmanuel
eddie van halen said that ...tone is in yr fingers an its true....
2 other things you need to improve, tuner and metronome

Yeah I'm sure you spend a lot of time working on your technique......I'm being sarcastic.
Just burned my guitar.
give a good player with a guitar with 2 inches of string action and he can't play for sure
Give a good guitar player a guitar with 2 inch string action and he'll pull out a slide
Or he’ll know how to adjust the action.

Why does his guitar have a terrible setup? All the bass notes are buzzing like they're snare drums...
he is muting them with the right hand while playing..
Derek Sena He doesn't know what he is doing does he 😜😂😎
I hear it to, a lot of fret buzz..........
Don't know why you would expect a mellow nylon sound from a steel string. I'm pretty sure he wants all that sizzle exactly where it is.
But Hendrix was always out of tune! :)
