Well said. I'm currently enemy's with mine, but we're getting along better and better. I've found it's actually rather soothing sometimes to play along to a metronome. Once you learn to how to play a guitar, timing is everything!
@ Jamie Phillips: it's Windy and Warm, a good version (but hey, Tommy has only good versions of course :) ) is found at his concert at Sheldon auditorium or maybe in some of his lessons here on u2b ;)
tapping your fot is trying to pump water around your skin to your fingers pour a cap of vinegar in your ear each day, it helps this by dissolving unwanted calcium in this water system
So true. I've heard mixes where someone merged different parts of two popular songs together and it works, because they were both on time. (and in the same key)
Sorry 181Burnout, the only way that's true is if the drummer is playing along with a metronome. Of course playing with a drummer (and other real musicians) is essential, but to say there's no benefit to playing with a metronome is nonsense. I hope that's not what you're saying. After all, if the drummer you're playing with sucks ass, then that's not going to help you one bit.
+beagleguitar 181 has a point and so do you, beale (love both names, btw. Makes me think of burning out on Beale street).I want to explain the argument that most people shy away from, 181's argument. So... why is playin with a good drummer better than playing with a metronome? I'll give the answer in one word: phrasing. Great drummers don't always give you "metronomic" eighths that fall right in the middle. Great modern drummers may not even give you a back beat. They will, however, feed you phrasing. This is the idea of macro time. Once you understand that most music is built in phrases of two measures, four measures, and eight measures, than you will realize the drawbacks to playing with a metronome. A great drummer will NEVER play like a metronome, that would be too square for most music, especially jazz. Great modern drummers love to mess with the beat, listen to Big Daddy Dave, Eric Harland, Bernard Perdie, Tony Williams. But, and this is a big but (sir mix a lot would agree :) ) drummers will give you rhythms based around the pulse of the phrase. If you want to know more, PM me for some good material on this. I just learned this concept in the last 3 years and it changed how I play music forever.
+lonewolf/*\ I never play with metronome... I never care about the timing, i'm in the band, and...I just know what i have to do.... Well I know at THIS moment i havo to do this, that's all... I don't care about the BPM...I play Hard Rock with my band...

pickinstone Interesting, what do you mean by ‘Most phrases are built in phrases of 2, 4 or 8 measure’?
