Regarding the 1 bay stations: You can have a second hard drive attached for backup. You should mention the limitations. I just purchased a DS418, and found that model doesn’t support Active Backups. A NAS that doesn’t do backups is like a screen door on a submarine.
I'm still in between forest fires and have no time to even setup my synology i bought yet 😅 I want to so badly but trying not to think about it. So hooked to learning all these new things.

Learning a lot, but one bit of information I can’t find is Larger hard drives vs more bays? 4 16tb vs 8 8tb pros/cons? 8 bay nas is twice the price for synology.
I have the DS920+ with 4 12TB Ironwolf hard drives, and upgraded to 8GB of ram. It also has 2 m.2 drives. When I stream Blu Ray quality videos, it takes a few seconds for the video to catch up with the sound. I have trouble skipping ahead, or backing up in a video. If I turn on subs it takes several seconds to start back up. My Freenas server that I built, with eight 4TB hard drives, 16GB of ram, and an intel 4 core Xeon processor doesn't do this. It may help someone when their buying to know this. I wish I had purchased the DS1621xs+, with the Xeon processor. Of course that's another $1000.00, but about as much as the 4 -12TB drives. Also if anyone is interested, the 8 drive Freenas with WD Reds, makes no noise, where the 4 12TB Ironwolf make a lot of noise. I don't know if it's the brand or the 5400 rpm Reds compared to the 7200 rpm Ironwolves. I hope this may help somebody decide. I do love your videos, and will continue to watch.
Thank you for all the time it took to put this all together and share with all of us. I knew nothing about NAS until today and I feel like I have a solid starting point! I am looking for a time machine backup solution for files, and for some photo editing and cloud replacement for my Apple products. Which version do you recommend for about 10TB Of storage? I’m mainly looking for seamless accessibility of files that will live on the NAS. Thanks and you’ve got a new subscriber!
I’ve been using the DS220+ with two 16TB disks. I use it for storage of all my photos as a photographer. I also use Synology Drive because it allows me to have current projects on both laptop and desktop and they sync together via the NAS. Very helpful when i want to move my editing from laptop to desktop. Don’t have to copy and paste files.

shr 1 or simply shr protects you against 1 hdd failure.......what is the probability of 2 hdds failure at same time? like should i sacrifice storage and use shr2 or shr1 is just fine....i m confused. i intend to buy ds920+ with 4 6TB hdds and confused to either go with shr1 or shr2.....how much regularly do 2 hdds fail at the same time?
RAID is not a backup, so if 2 HDDs should fail, you should recover the backup. If you want to use the best point between price and performance, I think you should use SHR(1)/RAID5 on the DS920+. You can Backup on a single HDD Device such as a normal external drive (Seagate has very good Backup devices for desktops you can use) or/and to an other NAS system (local or on an other place) per HyperBackup.
Hi, could you do a tutorial on how to set up a virtual desktop infrastructure using the virtual machines in synology nas? I have seen a lot of tutorials that cover machine creation and connection to it through a web browser. I was wondering if synology had any option to use a remote client like Citrix to be able to connect and use multiple displays. I noticed most synology nas devices mention "Citrix ready" among the features, but I haven't been able to figure out what that meant and if what I want to do is possible. As far as I can tell, if you connect to the vm through the browser you are stuck with only 1 monitor. Thanks!!
Its all about user experience. I will sometimes edit proxy footage on wifi on my laptop and its totally fine. I am line of site to the router very close. But wired will always be better
I am interested in RAID backup strategies. I was always hoping that since I had RAID I was protected from any disk failure - since I could recover from any of the 4 disk drives. And saying that, I know that is not the proper point of view. So, now I am a believer. My NAS recently failed and although it recovered, I was in a panic losing a lifetime of photos/videos plus my work, etc. So, do I have to buy an additional unit that matches the primary NAS? Today, I have a 8TB DS411J. I was going to upgrade to a DS418 and then use my current unit as a backup. What would you recommend?
Wow that unit is old! Well the way I see it you have a few different options 1) use the 411 as an offsite hyper backup destination. I would really recommend having the backup offsite because if something happens to your house having your main and your backup together will do you no good 2) use a cloud provider to backup your files If you have a place where someone will not mind you leaving the 411 then having it as an offsite backup is great! (assuming it can run hyper backup vault). Then if you have a folder with your really important files its not a bad idea to also get those backed up somewhere else such as AWS, C2 or B2. Generally people have
Hello! , I wanted to ask you a question, I would like to buy my first nas to use at home, to keep my photo library (about 1 terabyte) and use it as a google photo. I wanted to spend as little as possible obviously, I saw the j models but 512 mb of ram scare me, (I think they are not enough for a preview of the photos, or for managing the photos), I would go to at least 1 gb. So I saw the ds118 (160 €) and ds218 (270 €) models, the only j series model with 1 GB of ram is the ds320j (310 €) (also with 4 bay). As a processor they are the same the ram is 1 gb except the 218 which has 2, the only difference I think is the transcoding that in the 118 and 218 models supports up to 4k, but I don't think it is essential, unfortunately they do not support btrfs. Otherwise I would have to switch to ds220 + which has an intel processor, 2gb ram btrfs etc .. but it costs 370 €. What do you recommend to me mainly to manage 1 tb of photos and view previews quickly enough via phone app? Thanks :)
Awesome video, what do you recommend for a photography studio with two computers maybe add a third one down the line. I have tons of photos starting to add video. I use lightroom cc and Photoshop. Thank you
Great video, thanks! I was planning on getting a DS120J to backup my "old" DS916+ and thanks to this video I believe I got the extra motivation to eventually spend the money for it! :) Just one concern, DS120J doesn't manage BTFRS: in your opinion, would this be an issue for a NAS dedicated to backup my main NAS? EXT4 would do the job?
It’s not an issue, especially for home backups. For more serious business I generally will want BTRFS backups as you can snapshot the hyper backup to give extra security in case a hacker somehow gets full admin access to your NAS
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer me! Being mine a home backup, I would definitely go with the DS120J.... unless I get crazy (or lucky winning the lottery) and buy a DS1621xs+, ending up using my old DS916+ as backup server.. :)
I looking at getting a ds418 or a ds420 . I am not sure on which to get since the 420 is about 140 more. I want to be able to store all of my current data. Almost 20tb and use the photo storage like google photos. What you recommend ?
I need help. Would it be best to purchase the 2 TB iCloud storage to back my iMac and then get a entry level NAS to set up a Apple TV movie library on for storage and organization?
I know it is in the high end it sector but there is a code "RC" Rack Cluster. I have the RC18015xs+ as my personal research machine with 12 10tb SAS DRIVES, XEON, 32GB RAM. Just added 2x10GBe card and upgraded to DSM 7. I've had it for 5 years and it is still a beast. And yes it can go up to 180 drives. I have millions of documents and use Universal Search.
@SpaceRex: WRITE SPEED [Mostly from fast USB 3(HDD:200MB/s to max SSD:500MB/s)]: 4BAY Raid 10 vs 2BAY Raid 1 (Or SHR) What is gonna be faster ? I don't need Raid 5 because write speeds and reconstruction seems very slow if your read about it and I don't mind 50% disk space.
Haven't pulled the trigger, but have a few questions. Going to replace my very aged server with a NAS. I want to backup my system (Files only). I want to stream my MP4 and MKV TV and Movies. I don't think I need RAID. I would keep it simple and if I can use a 4-5 bay and put in 3 drives to start. 1 for Backup, 1 for Movies, 1 for TV shows and map each drive. Is that doable? 3 mapped drives and if any die, no big deal as I have another backup, replace the drive and up and running again once the files are back on the new drive. Thoughts about this and is there a better method? I keep watching and learning, so thanks for the videos!
If you are totally ok loosing the data then that’s a fine setup! Only issue is it will become a bit of a pain to expand as you would have to map a new folder
@@SpaceRexWill Not an issue, just another backup and server for TV and Movies. I was planning to create one master folder per drive and everything else goes under that. 1 for TV, 1 Movies, 1 Documents. I assume that if I map the high-level folder everything is good like on my server.
Looking to move away from Google photos and run Synology Photos exclusively with 2 hard drives in Raid 1. Any thoughts on what model might be best? I don' want to overbuy, but don't want to have to upgrade for a long time either.
Anyone watching this fore cache info should know that its partially out of date. Look on the web for updated info. First, caching works much better under dsm7.x and pretty much is a waste of money under DSM6. Syn made big upgrades to caching in 7. Second, its about a 20% difference for random access, and ~6% for sequential on a 1621 series. Third, probably works much better with 10Gb ethernet, with 1Gb you're not going to see the difference. Fourth, a fast CPU like 1621+ or 1621xs+ will benefit most. Overall, if you want performance out of your caching, you're in the over $1300 range. So you know, I'm not sure at this point but I think it might be as fast or better to just use SSD storage.
Super helpful content. Could you do a video on "how many Windows VM's?". I have a client with remote workers. After looking at different Synology boxes I've concluded mini-pc's with active backup is a more viable option. However, I couldn't find a video on this, just how to create a VM.
Depends heavily on how bad downtime is for you and how good your backup is. If running with 16TB drives and downtime is really bad SHR-2 after 6 Drives is generally what I recommend
Subbed! I'm curious on your thoughts of upgrading RAM past the supported amount. Like you said, unused RAM just goes to cache so could I put 20GB of RAM(total) on a DS920+?
I am using a 10year old pc hard drive is nearly full i watch RUclips gamming a chit ton and have movies both on hard drive and externals i need MORE storage and auto-backup +security what is best for my needs sorry never took a pc class in my life when i got out of school PCs had not been born yet thank you

I tried using the 2bay ds218+ as a media server but could not get it working correctly without buffering issues. I tried the synologys video mamagement and plex but couldnt get either working . I returned it and just setup a older dell optiplex with a bunch of drives
I'm buying the DS720+ for storage, photo, and video editing. It has two 1gbe connections but my question is can I use both if I connect one of those USB to Ethernet adapters?
Great Video: A question I have, is how do the Synology features compare to AWS File Gateway appliances. And can I replicate/save the data on a Synology NAS to S3 on AWS?
I have not used the AWS file before so I cannot comment. However you can backup files from your synology to S3. It is a backup, not as much of a sync though. It should only be done one way from your NAS to the S3. Then if you need to recover the files download them.
The dangers are really just the unknowns of how they will play nicely together. You will not loose data if you have RAID1,5 or SHR1/2. These will allow you to expand drives later
Hi, thanx for this very extensive good video. I do have a question though. Is there really no way to get higher speeds on wifi like lets say 300 to 500Mbps with for example a ds1621+?
So my notes on that were in MB/s rather than Mb/s. For WiFi speeds it’s totally up to what your router can do, it will not be limited by the synology in 1/10000 cases
@@SpaceRexWill ok i mixed things up with MB/s Megabyte per second which you say maximum over 1 GbE is 110MB. But you also say over wifi it is impossible to get over 110MB no matter how many drivers or NVM or Ram you have. You probably won’t even get 110MB/s because of more package loss. Am i getting this correct. And if I really want higher speed for let’s say video editing only way is around 7 drives and 10Gb/s cable connected directly to computer. With that solution what is your maximum speed you’re getting?
Hey, great videos and provided a lot of insight. I wanted to know if you have any advice for setting up a NAS with direct connection as well as part of the network. I've just added a DS1520+ to my system. Hoping to do some adaptiv load balancing on 2 ports as I don't have a managed network at home. In addition, I want to use it for video editing so I've added 2 x 1TB NVMe's for caching and hoping I can do a direct connection with my main Mac machine. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Q
Hi! Great video, don't worry about the folks nitpicking - most of us are just here to learn xD My question: Why do you choose Ironwolf's and not WD reds? tyvm
So when I was first going into getting NAS drives I did research between the Reds and Ironwolfs and honestly really ended choosing ironwolfs because of WD putting SMR drives in their NAS line. SMR is not a huge deal for something like an external HD, but for a drive you are marketing for NAS its pretty shady
16:40 such an important piece of budgeting information. Spend more on the NAS box to spend less on the drives.

I found the Ironwolfs to be noisy also. I can hear the heads bumping around through my walls.
Awesomely explained, you have a gift for clarity .
Thank you for putting this video together. Great video to review when looking at models
I’m glad!
Came across this video by chance (RUclips threw it in the recommended section).. Amazing stuff! Definitely subscribing...
Glad you like the channel!
Been looking for this info! Thanks your videos are very valuable😊
Love to find new channels knowing theyˋre gonna go mainstream soon. Too good information and well spoken. Looking forward seeing your channel grow and ”match” the other big channels!
Thanks! That really means a ton! (I hope so!)
Good to see I'm not the only one leaving positive comments for RUclipsrs. I get copypastad all the time for how overtly positive I can be. So I'm glad things are swinging in the more positive direction these days. Also I agree. This content IS higher quality than usual for a newer channel and I myself also HIGHLY HIGHLY appreciate the razer sharp level of how well spoken Spacerex is! Rock on Spacerex!
Thanks for a comprehensive overview.
shr 1 or simply shr protects you against 1 hdd failure.......what is the probability of 2 hdds failure at same time? like should i sacrifice storage and use shr2 or shr1 is just fine....i m confused. i intend to buy ds920+ with 4 6TB hdds and confused to either go with shr1 or shr2.....how much regularly do 2 hdds fail at the same time?
RAID is not a backup, so if 2 HDDs should fail, you should recover the backup. If you want to use the best point between price and performance, I think you should use SHR(1)/RAID5 on the DS920+. You can Backup on a single HDD Device such as a normal external drive (Seagate has very good Backup devices for desktops you can use) or/and to an other NAS system (local or on an other place) per HyperBackup.
"j" series could stand for the journaling in EXT4 file system. J series doesn't support BRTFS.
A great talk, I listened to it 100% and learned a lot, thanks.
Thanks!!
Learned a lot. Great presentation. Very clear. Provided great rationale and examples.
Glad you liked it!
I enjoy your videos very much young man. Thanks for the hard work.
When you're editing video that is stored on a Synology, do you need a wired connection or can you do it wirelessly on a laptop?
Its all about user experience. I will sometimes edit proxy footage on wifi on my laptop and its totally fine. I am line of site to the router very close. But wired will always be better
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for the help. I figured you had to be wired, but I just wasn't sure.
Great video. New at the NAS systems. This was definitely useful.
This guys a great teacher and I learned a lot
Well done. Really clear and comprehensive. Thank you.
Well the way I see it you have a few different options
1) use the 411 as an offsite hyper backup destination. I would really recommend having the backup offsite because if something happens to your house having your main and your backup together will do you no good
2) use a cloud provider to backup your files
If you have a place where someone will not mind you leaving the 411 then having it as an offsite backup is great!
I have a Synology DS120j. It's a heap of junk. The transfer speed is dire. It sits there now unused until I get round to putting it up on eBay.
Actually good affiliate marketing 👌 Kudos for actually giving valuable information. Thanks!
Hey thanks!
You provided some awesome information in this video. Thank you.
can i use 18TB HDDs on synology systems?
I looking at getting a ds418 or a ds420 . I am not sure on which to get since the 420 is about 140 more.
I want to be able to store all of my current data. Almost 20tb and use the photo storage like google photos.
What you recommend ?
I actually fall asleep watching this video ... jezz there is so much information
Take a 5 hour energy and wash it down with a Red Bull. That's how you can survive.
More than 30 mins Video, but hey, that is quality content . Thanks a lot!

Ah I think these have been replaced by the SAS series which are scaleable
@@SpaceRexWill Yes, I've had for 5 years. No need to replace.
@SpaceRex:
WRITE SPEED [Mostly from fast USB 3(HDD:200MB/s to max SSD:500MB/s)]:
4BAY Raid 10
vs
2BAY Raid 1 (Or SHR)
What is gonna be faster ?
I don't need Raid 5 because write speeds and reconstruction seems very slow if your read about it and I don't mind 50% disk space.
The 4BAY will always be faster as its basically two raid 1 systems raid 0'd together
Would you buy a 1621+ now or wait ? Is it being replaced this year? That model came out in 2020.
1621+ likely will not be replaced this year.
Also it’s a huge step up from its predecessor. Would highly recommend
Do you plan to do an update video with considerations on the 2023 models?
Do they come out with new models every year?
@@gfriedman99 I don't think so, they are on a longer refresh cycle I believe.
Great Video and very articulate... Thanks
Looking to move away from Google photos and run Synology Photos exclusively with 2 hard drives in Raid 1. Any thoughts on what model might be best? I don' want to overbuy, but don't want to have to upgrade for a long time either.
In that case go with the DS220+, gives you an upgraded CPU, but only 2 bays. If you think you would need more than 16TB you could upgrade to DS420+
@@SpaceRexWill awesome, thanks!
Thanks this was very helpful!
Awesome video, very informative! Thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Should you setup an 8 bay unit as shr2? I might buy 3 or 4, 4tb drives to start with and upgrade as I fill it.
Depends heavily on how bad downtime is for you and how good your backup is. If running with 16TB drives and downtime is really bad SHR-2 after 6 Drives is generally what I recommend
Please help me understand how photos on my NAS are displayed on my iPhone. Are photos resident on the phone or on the NAS?
Thanks for the video!
Subbed! I'm curious on your thoughts of upgrading RAM past the supported amount. Like you said, unused RAM just goes to cache so could I put 20GB of RAM(total) on a DS920+?
So I have heard of people successfully adding more than the 'supposed' ram but I have not been able to test it
I am using a 10year old pc hard drive is nearly full i watch RUclips gamming a chit ton and have movies both on hard drive and externals i need MORE storage and auto-backup +security what is best for my needs sorry never took a pc class in my life when i got out of school PCs had not been born yet thank you
Excellent content. Greatly appreciated.
Much appreciated!
What are some of the top Synology NAS to run Plex? I don't really have any 4K content. I know it use to the 920+. But it has been hard to find.
So do I need to add a new volume if I add a disk in a 4 bay model or does that only apply to expansion using an expansion bay? I'm using SHR.
I got a DS218J Running DSM 7.0 Beta But I've Out Grown it I like to add 1 to two more bays but Need something that can see use DSM 7.0 Any ideas I want to See under 500 CND (390. USD) I use my Nas as Webserver and Media Server
So you want a direct connection to your laptop or something?
Great Video: A question I have, is how do the Synology features compare to AWS File Gateway appliances. And can I replicate/save the data on a Synology NAS to S3 on AWS?
I have not used the AWS file before so I cannot comment.
However you can backup files from your synology to S3. It is a backup, not as much of a sync though. It should only be done one way from your NAS to the S3. Then if you need to recover the files download them.
Complete info thanks for the share
Loved the detailed vidoe 👍
What are the dangers of mixing HDD brands? And will you lose your files by adding more drives later?
I am only planning to use the NAS for storage and playing home videos .The DS220+ seems overkill but good value for money?
big question, j or +
Hey, great videos and provided a lot of insight.
Thanks,
Q
check out my video "10GbE with no switch" for direct connections. Super easy to do without paying for a 10GbE switch
j in naming scheme is Junior according to Synology Staff
Great teacher - thanks so much!!
What i dont get is why most of there models only ship with 1 expansion slot.
So you can get 10gb internet nic
Or
M.2 caching
Why not both?!
Thank you this is good information! Can I use a J series and have someone outside my country to store there as well?
Yes you can!
@@SpaceRexWill Thank you, I just need to figure out if I need 2 or 4 bay ...
Great information 👍🏽
