@@thatonejoey1847 I feel like Three Hopes sort of ruins the dynamic between Bernadetta and her father. Because we only see the cowardly and pathetic side of him, we never once get insight into his abusive behavior so for all we know Bernie could just be making it up. All it does is treat him like a joke almost as much as it does to Bernie, which is literally the worst aspect of her character. Three hopes had so much potential to flesh her out, or give us insight but it just didn't. Which really stinks because I've been in practically the same shoes as Bernie has been growing up and all of those little details are what make her one of the best characters in Three Houses and one of my favorites ever. Hell, Edelgard basically apologizes to her for *not* killing her dad in a coup. She seems to have more regrets about not murdering Bernie's dad than she does about any of the thousands she slaughters.
Bernie will forever be a character I’m mixed on. She’s an almost cartoonish display of social anxiety that never grows to cope, and thus ends up being really depressing and almost annoying. On the other hand, bean.
She improves in Three Houses, after the time skip she in her room less often and more confident. She isn't 100% better, but nobody will be after trauma, it takes a very long time, I speak from experience.
@@Quetzalcoatl-Dragon_97 she’s been had it in 3 houses, but people are still stuck on her pre-timeskip era where she’s kinda cartoonishly anxious, but she definitely is more confident in the post timeskip
I get you, I found it annoying at first but as you find out how her father treated her it makes sense and I came to need to protect her at all cost. I haven’t played much of 3 hopes and I’m doing golden deers route first but I hope we see what made Bernie grow as a character during that time skip seeing as this is kind of a similar time period and Edelgard is still conquering fodlan
I will always find it a bit irritating that people only see the social anxiety in Bernadetta. Social anxiety is the fear of being judged by others. It's the fear of doing something embarrassing, the feeling that everyone is judging you. Bernie clearly has something else besides her fear of going outside. I'd argue it's paranoia. In Caspars Support she insists that there are people in the armor that are going to harm her or in Dorothea's B Support in Three Houses she thinks Dorothea is about to harm her. In most of her supports, she jumps to the conclusion that people will harm her, even if there's no rational reason for them. She thinks everything and everyone is out to get her. The whole world is evil in her eyes. People with social anxiety can see the world as something that's good, they just might think they're the ones who are bad, not the world itself. ''Paranoia is characterized by a lack of trust in the motives of others and hostility; social anxiety is characterized by a lack of trust in one's own ability to meet social demands and self-blame. More studies are needed to understand how these constructs relate.'' While yes, her reactions are sometimes a bit too much and clearly a bit exaggerated, it's not that weird if you think about how people with paranoia think. Edelgards A support shows how hard the battle for those people is. Bernie might be able to overcome her social anxiety but will probably always have times where her paranoia comes back. It's not something she will be able to overcome without the proper help, which probably doesn't exist in Fodlan. :P
@@Skillshot360s part of me loves it too, but I'm also sad they doubled down on the aspects people disliked most about her. I want her problems to be taken more seriously and for her to go in depth about her past and whatnot.
I feel bad for Bernie in Three Hopes. For everyone else it’s probably the better timeline but for her she never gets over her anxieties and they arguably get even worse
I don't know if I'd say she's worse. I do kind of like seeing just what she's like without Byleth's influence. It's more like she's stagnant, she isn't worse but not really better either. Hits kinda close to home

I wouldn't really call her brave in 3 houses. She just generally has a distrust in others and no desire to do anything outside of her hobbies. In battle she constantly mentions how she thinks she'll die or how she wants to leave.
I can understand that point of view but I feel like the game is a bit more self aware than that. As someone who has anxiety myself a lot of the stuff Bernadetta says in response to situations are the types of things I think to myself all the time. I just know better not to say them out loud because I understand on some level how absurd they are. The playfulness, as you described it, with bernadetta doesn’t just come from the fact that she has anxiety, it comes from the fact that she’s so wrapped up in the scenarios that her nerves create in her own mind that it makes her seem delusional. Because that’s the thing about anxiety, it’s inherently irrational. So from an outsiders perspective, it can come across as kinda comical that someone would actually believe these things. Where her character development comes from is her being able to see past those delusions that her anxiety creates and not allow them to hold her back and prevent her from doing her best.
@@aegeon5650 Yeah, I see a lot of myself in Bernadetta. I just keep those negative thoughts to myself, but in the back of my head I'm always insulting myself and thinking everyone is out to get me for one reason or another.
