I am Japanese and used to use it when I moved to Tokyo and was looking for an apartment.
It is too hot in the middle of summer in Tokyo. The air conditioner is working and you can drink as much as you want.
The night package is even cheaper, so I would order a beer and sleep until morning.
I also often use it when I miss the last train after a night of drinking.
The first train in Ikebukuro leaves at 5:00 a.m., so a manga café is the perfect place to get some sleep.

this should be definitely adopted in western states. I believe 50% of homelessness would be avoided if not more as it solves a variety of issues at one go.
Its not only about the shelter itself, its access to internet, tv, drinks, shower etc. you could basically participate in society by having a remote job without tying any financial or emotional strings to a place.
Sure adaption would take time and it would be more of an avoidance of homelessness developing in the future than with the current generation but still an effort which should be made

It's very difficult for us in the West to understand just how valued privacy is in Japan. I remember seeing a Natural History programme where a geologist explored how the geology and geography of the country affected its culture. To keep it simple, most of the population is crammed into a very small area of land that is relatively flat. The need to keep tensions down between so many individuals occupying what little liveable space there is has led to a very ritualised polite society. It also means that privacy, as we lucky sods in the West know it, is rare in Japan and considered a luxury. As small as that space is, the fact you can rent it per hour for as long as you want is a perk. To have such things as food and drink there makes it almost paradisical...

If the building has good air conditioning it looks like it would be a good place to cool down and rehydrate in hot weather.
With the tissues and wipe-clean furniture I'm guessing some people find it a good place for other purposes...

Yeah a lot of people are talking about homeless but employed people living there but there's also a large population of young adults that still live at home with parents, sometimes grandparents, not a lot of privacy... love hotels are popular for a reason but a place for solo activities could definitely also be in demand & this is a bit less targeted than American-style peep shows & adult theater booths, more discrete.

You eat your food in the rooms. So it makes sense everything should be easily wiped off. This isn’t an enclosed room. It’s just a cubicle. There’s no way you can even move without anyone hearing you.

A lot of food channels have started doing that. Turning up the sounds. Every clink, crunch, slurp, amplified. I tend to turn the sound off as it is irritating to me. But, Asians in general eat very loud.
